An editorial in the American Journal of Public Health highlights the need to address the historical underrepresentation of American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations in data and scientific research. CEAL has launched collaborative initiatives to promote equitable public health and research approaches for these populations.
NIH Office of Disease Prevention shares its Director’s Message: Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis
In this message, Dr. David Murray is joined by the directors of four other NIH offices and institutes to highlight their roles in improving maternal health. Because most maternal deaths happen during the year immediately after pregnancy, also known as the postpartum period, these five offices and institutes came together to organize the Pathways to Prevention Workshop, which works to identify ways to optimize postpartum health.

New MMWR examines heat-related emergency department visits
A recent CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) found that unprecedented heat waves can affect all people, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers.

NIH will soon accept applications to examine social determinants of health
NIH is inviting applications for the Axes Initiative, which will examine social determinants of health and their impact on health and health inequities. Applications are due in July 2024, and awards will be announced in April 2025.
