House Panels Advance Budget Reconciliation Legislation; WH Announces Initial Round of Afghan Resettlement. This week, a number of congressional committees met to complete their respective titles of a legislative package that reflects key elements of President Biden’s American Families Plan. Pursuant to the fiscal year 2022 budget resolution (S Con Res 14), 13 House committees were given a September 15 deadline to advance their portions of the plan. Looking ahead, the earliest the chamber will consider the legislation is during the week of September 20; however, this timeline could easily slip to the week of September 27 or early October. CAL FIRE Announces $138 Million in Fire Prevention Grants
|
|
This week CAL FIRE announced 105 local projects will receive $138 million through its Fire Prevention Grant program. The Grant provides direct funding to local agencies and organizations, like fire safe councils, to support fire prevention projects like fuel reduction, wildfire planning, and fire prevention education. This comes as another win to counties, who are on the front lines of preventing wildfire in California. Read more

Governor Newsom Appoints New Health and Human Services Undersecretary and Health Care Services Director

The Governor’s office recently announced the appointment of Marko Mijic as the new Undersecretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS), and the appointment of Michelle Baass as the Director of the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). The partnership between CHHS, DHCS, and California Counties is vital to the continued administration of programs and services that reach the most vulnerable in our state. Read more

The results of a statewide process to engage with and listen to Californians with low incomes will be shared with the public in a webinar scheduled on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The webinar is a culmination of a multi-method community engagement effort led by the California Community Foundation, The California Endowment, and the California Health Care Foundation which tracked the process of the Healthy California for All Commission’s deliberations. Do You Know? San Mateo County

Duels came back into the spotlight with the rise of the Broadway musical Hamilton. Did you know that San Mateo County is home to the "Last American Duel?" On September 13, 1859, U.S. Senator David C. Broderick, of California faced off against ex-Chief Justice David S. Terry, of the Supreme Court of CA. Broderick was wounded and fell to the ground, dying three days later from his injuries. Today, San Mateo County is home to Silicon Valley and numerous science and technology companies, including Facebook, Oracle, YouTube, Genentech, and more.
