CEP COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund "Request for Support"
The Caribbean Equality Project's (CEP) COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for Black & Brown Queer and Trans Caribbean People is a response to the devastating effects of both the COVID-19 outbreak and financial crisis in New York City. During the past 5 years, we have seen and learned, that our vulnerable community members have always been essential and frontline workers. Our documented and undocumented Caribbean LGBTQ+ community members work in the restaurants, grocery stores, nightlife industries, construction, and other labor-intensive jobs that have been impacted by the current shelter in place order. These workers are the backbone of our City who do not have the means and ways to Stay Home during a state of national emergency.

We have recognized the economic impact on the undocumented LGBTQ+ immigrants we serve, many of whom are experiencing food insecurity, as a result of COVID-19 and the related shelter in place order. Many of our low-income frontline workers have lost their jobs or are working reduced hours, and have been experiencing difficulty paying rent and meeting other basic living expenses. As the only-educational agency serving the marginalized Caribbean LGBTQ+ population in NYC, we are dedicated to providing resources, guidance, emotional support, and material aid throughout this period of uncertainty.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
- Caribbean LGBTQ undocumented people and asylum seekers
- Caribbean LGBTQ healthcare workers
- Caribbean LGBTQ HIV impacted community members
- Caribbean LGBTQ documented and undocumented families, youth, and vulnerable immigrants
- Displaced Caribbean LGBTQ hourly essential staff

The Caribbean Equality Project will review all micro-grant applications on a case-by-case basis so that our financial relief efforts remain as streamlined and responsive as possible. With that stated, we have created the following guidelines around who will be receiving aid and for what specific needs, in order to responsibly allocate these funds.

We will prioritize undocumented black and brown LGBTQ+ people, asylum-seekers and refugees from the Caribbean, unemployed individuals ineligible for unemployment benefits, and immunocompromised community members.

Through this online application process, we will conduct daily phone interviews to further determine eligibility.

What will we fund?

Hot Meals - Community members in immediate need of a hot meal can contact CEP to place a pick-up food order at a local establishment of their choice.

Healthcare Co-Pays - To support immunocompromised community members to fill prescriptions, including HIV impacted folks.

Visa Debit Cards - CEP will issue prepaid Visa cards to help cover groceries, personal care needs, and toiletry costs.

Direct Money Transfers - Emergency cases that involve the threat of eviction or similar critical issues may be given cash directly. Cash transfers can help address quality of life issues that result from loss of income, such as the payment of various essential utilities and bills (electric, heating, phone, etc).

Metrocards -  Transit support for low-income LGBTQ+ immigrants working reduced hours.

About Caribbean Equality Project
The Caribbean Equality Project empowers the marginalized voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people of Caribbean origin and descent through advocacy, community organizing, education, cultural, and social programming.

To date, CEP is the only educational-based agency serving the Caribbean-American LGBTQ community in New York City and is dedicated to cultivating a supportive and progressive Caribbean community free of violence, oppression, and discrimination. Our advocacy efforts are directed towards fostering community partnerships and greater family acceptance. Additionally, we act as a liaison to government agencies and elected officials with the collective vision of a society based on respect, inclusion, and equality, regardless of an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity within the Caribbean diaspora.
