It has been a good couple of weeks for Dustin Wolf.
The 19-year-old netminder recently celebrated his birthday with news that he was named a finalist for WHL Goaltender of the Year (he won the award last season).
Now he’s being rewarded with his first NHL contract, which he is fully deserving of.
Wolf posted video game-like numbers in the WHL during the 2019-20 campaign. He won 34 of his 46 decisions and stopped 93.5% of the shots he faced.
To paint a picture of how absurd that is, Kamloops netminder Dylan Garand (.921 SV%) was the closest netminder to Wolf in SV% who appeared in at least 30 games. Wolf was the top starter by a country mile.
What Wolf is doing is almost unheard of for anyone, let alone a 7th rounder. The guy is 75-25-4 over the last two seasons with a .935 save percentage. Insane.
That’s why, despite concerns over his size, he’s getting an ELC less than a year removed from being drafted. That is somewhat uncommon for a mid-rounder. For one of the last picks in the entire draft to sell a team on giving him a contract this quickly is almost unprecedented.
You never know how a prospect will translate – especially at this position – but it’s very easy to get excited about Wolf’s future.
He’ll return to Everett for one more (hopefully) dominant season in 2020-21 before turning pro a year from now.
