BetterWorld Café: Saving Indigenous Languages and Species
Hosted by Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc. ( The Mind Museum and BGC Arts Center )

Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been driving species to extinction at 1,000-10,000 times faster than the background rate. On the other hand, a language dies with its last speaker every two weeks. And experts predict that 50-90% of the world’s 7,000 languages today may vanish by 2100.

The loss of languages is linked to the loss of species as endangered languages are also found in biodiversity hotspots and wilderness areas where indigenous communities live. Research suggests that indigenous peoples’ cultures and practices allow species to thrive, so how can we work with communities to better protect both species and languages?
