What We Achieve

Our goals in the program are: to introduce students to performance, to help students gain confidence, to build skills needed for musical theatre performances, to give vocal students a chance to perform in an ensemble.

Specific Goals and Objectives

Kids Junior (7-9)

Classes work on building blocks of performance, like projection, learning a script, dance choreography fundamentals, playing a character and basic singing technique. Roles are divided equally so that all students get an opportunity to learn skills in a non-threatening environment and students put on two mini-musicals a year.

Kids Senior (10-12)

Classes work on further developing musical theatre skills. Most students in this class have done some theatre performance before so we work on more challenging choreography, a more extensive script and introduce some solo singing and further voice technique. Improvisation games and theatre exercises are also introduced in this level as students work towards putting on a mini-musical at the end of each term.

Teen (13-18)

Classes focus more on solo work and character development. All students get to take the lead in a solo performance in each terms production and more individual attention is given to all students. Students perform a cabaret at the end of each term, and are featured as soloists, ensemble and backup singers for other students. Choreography is more challenging and harmony singing is introduced.

Full Production & Summer Program

Musical Theatre Camp (ages 11-18)

During August, all students are invited to be part of the school’s annual full-length musical. Roles are assigned by audition only and casting is done in June. During this two-week intensive, students put together an entire musical production including backstage work such as working on props, sets and costumes. Past shows include The Sound of Music, Seussical, Willy Wonka, Into the Woods, Pippin, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, Guys and Dolls and many more.

FAQ’S

Music Theatre FAQ’s

Q: If I am taking Music Theatre classes, do I have to take private as well?

A: Although the music theatre program will touch on a lot of vocal fundamentals, it is not designed to replace the skills learned in a private music lesson.

While the music theatre program will be able to teach things such as choreography, working on and memorizing a script, performance basics, ensemble singing, and much more, the core musical skills are still best worked on in a focused environment, whether that’s group music lessons or private:

  • Rhythm
  • Applied Theory
  • Technique
  • Repertoire
  • Ear Training
  • Sight Reading
  • Improvisation
  • Composition
  • Technology / Instrumental Integration

Q: Can I join music theatre at any time, or only at the beginning of the year?

A: There are two times in which the program can be enrolled in…the month of September, and the month of January.
