Welcome to the EU Code Week Deep Dive MOOC 2020

This course will provide primary and secondary school teachers with ideas, free training material and resources to help them bring coding and computational thinking into the classroom with already made lessons plans. Besides, teachers will learn what is Code Week and how to participate in this initiative, that during 2019 engaged 4.2 million people in Europe and beyond. At the end of the MOOC, participants will have to organise an activity with their students or colleagues and register it in the Code Week map. After reporting the activity, participants will also get a certificate validated by the European Commission for their participation and engagement in the initiative.

Learning objectives

  • To raise awareness about the importance of integrating coding and computational thinking into the classroom
  • To become familiar with innovative tools and approaches such as visual programming tools, unplugged activities, robotics, tinkering and making and coding for all subjects
  • To provide teachers with the basic knowledge of the Code.org CS fundamentals curriculum
  • To provide teachers with free training materials and resources available in 29 languages
  • To get familiar with the EU Code Week initiative and learn how to register an activity and report back
  • To discover what is the Code Week 4 all challenge
  • To become part of a community of enthusiastic teachers that can interact, exchange, share best practices and participate together in the EU Code Week initiative 2020.

Prerequisites

This course can be followed by primary and secondary school teachers, regardless the subject they teach and their knowledge of coding. The course is also open to anybody interested and willing to take the course: young adults, adults, seniors, parents, librarians, entrepreneurs and policymakers. No previous experience or knowledge on coding and computational thinking is needed to take this course.

  • Module 4: Robotics, Tinkering and Making - opens on 07/10/2020
  • Module 5: Coding for All, App Development and CS Fundamentals - opens on 14/10/2020

Certification

In order to earn a course certificate, course participants need to design a lesson, register it as a EU Code Week activity, and review two EU Code Week activities registered by other participants. The final deadline to complete all activities is 30 October 2020, 23:59 CET. The participation in the quiz will count for 5% of the final grade and is not a requirement for receiving the course certificate. The EU Code Week activity registered, together with the peer reviews, will count for 95% of the final grade. The overall passing grade is 95%.

Naír Carrera - course coordinator

Naír Carrera has been working as an educational expert and external consultant in European projects for the last several years, focusing on digital and innovative education, e-Learning, and teachers´ training. She joined European Schoolnet in 2015, where she works as Education and Engagement Manager of the European Commission´s initiative EU Code Week, where she also contributes to the project strategic planning, monitoring, content creation and community engagement. Tommaso Dalla Vecchia - course moderator

At European Schoolnet since 2012, he has been working in lots of different projects and initiatives. Konstantinos Andronikidis - course moderator

Konstantinos is working at European Schoolnet as part of the Development & Advocacy Team. His main work includes supporting the project proposal writing processes, the coordination of EUN’s Future Classroom Lab stakeholders’ community, and the coordination of projects such as EU Code Week and IMPACT EdTech.
