“I believe that this pandemic, though difficult and scary for us and our kids, has the potential to positively impact our kids for the rest of their lives.”

As parents, some of the fear and anxiety we are facing in the midst of this pandemic relates to our children and how all of this will impact them. How is this isolation affecting them? Are they falling behind? How do I help them face the loss this pandemic is causing for them?

We love our children and ultimately want to protect them. But what if in the long run the impact on our children is not actually going to be negative? What if the adversity and difficult experiences they are going through right now means that they will not just survive the pandemic but actually will thrive because of it?

Here is what we know about life on this earth. Struggle is a part of growth. It is often failure that is our greatest teacher. Adversity and difficulty are not things we enjoy or seek out, but ultimately they are often the defining factors in becoming who we are and determining the direction of our lives.

I believe that this pandemic, though difficult and scary for us and our kids, has the potential to positively impact our kids for the rest of their lives. This event will forge in this generation of young people some very important life lessons that will guide and direct them. I see this in three areas:
  1. Appreciation
I believe our children are learning to appreciate many things that most of us have taken for granted our whole lives. I think all of us are going to appreciate many things when this is all over, but for our kids this pandemic is going to form in them a lifelong appreciation of things like birthday parties, going out to eat, seeing a movie with friends, vacation trips, and simply the joy of being together. We have worried that devices and technology available to them were going to isolate this generation, but I believe our kids will appreciate community even more than we did.

  2. Preparation
I believe our children are going to be much more prepared for the ups and downs of life. Our kids have learned through this difficult situation that life is not easy and that there are no guarantees. I think our children will have a much deeper value of money and being financially ready for the difficulties that life brings their way.

  3. Education
In the long run I believe that our children’s education will be positively impacted by this pandemic. First I think our children are going to enjoy school more than their predecessors. Most students prior to the MCO would have said that they don’t like going to school. For many there will be a new sense of joy and pleasure in being at school: being with their friends and learning; being in the classroom with their teacher. Many of them are going to enjoy the extra-curricular activities much more and attend events that many students in the past skipped like concerts, games, student events, etc. Another side of this is that many students will have gained the skills and confidence of knowing that they can learn online and be successful with it and for many that will open up new possibilities and opportunities to be lifelong learners anywhere in the world.
The western phrase “every cloud has a silver lining” expresses the idea that within negative situations there are still positives happening. I think we all know this to be true and understand it, but that does not necessarily make the rain go away. It can however help us have a different perspective of the rain and give us hope that good can come out of this.

Please note that no students may enter campus, and security will do a temperature screening for all visitors. Wearing a mask is highly encouraged. The Library remains closed.

Jumpa Lagi shirts have arrived on campus. Parents can pick up shirts for their students to wear in that next Zoom call before school ends! You must make an appointment before you come by calling 04-375-2100 between 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

A check-out procedure is being developed for returning books, uniforms, instruments, etc., to campus, as well as for picking up personal items at the end of the school year. This will include emptying lockers, returning textbooks and other school equipment, collecting yearbooks, and more. Dear Elementary students, your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to complete a seven-day gratefulness challenge. Did you know that the Bible tells us that being thankful is very important, especially in hard times. This challenge will help us to focus on all the good instead of the bad. Do your best and submit days 4 and 7 to estreasures@dalat.org for the principal’s challenge. I look forward to reading your submissions.

고등학생 안내 시간 및 필요 자료
高中指导时间和资源

This Monday, May 18, the HS Guidance Department will send out a link (with the new schedule and updated 4-year plan) for students to make requests for changes to schedules.

Please keep in mind:
  • Making a request does not guarantee you will receive your request.
  • The form link is the ONLY means to make a request.
  • If you have sent in an email request you will need to resubmit via the form link.
  • Students will have until 4 p.m. the following Monday, May 25, to initiate their requests. You will be notified by email if your request has been approved/denied, or if we need to Zoom with you to discuss details.
  • Requests to change your schedule for personal reasons (e.g., I prefer AM classes, there’s a cute guy in G Block, D Block classes in Sydney get me to lunch faster, etc.) are not considered valid.
  • Class schedule changes will also be accepted during the first week of school in August.
  • Online classes:  If you have been approved to take an online class (Grades 11–12) you can start the process of choosing your class with Mr. Doug Yost dyost@dalat.org, our online learning coordinator, and filling out the e-learning contract (to be sent out on Monday with the other documents) with parent signatures to submit to me by the end of this school year.  Actual payment for/registration of the class will take place during the first week of school. Semester One online classes generally start from 1–2 weeks after the start of the school year.
  • Mrs. Roberts will be supporting requests for next year’s 9th grade, and I will support next year’s 10–12th grade.

Note from the
Parent-Teacher Organization

Dear Dalat Teachers & Staff,

What an unusual ending to this academic year! These last two months have been a cause for some intense heartache alongside immense gratitude. If anything, our focus has been refined in some unexpected ways, true to our FOCUS 2020 theme. While we are always thankful for you, faithful teachers & staff, we admire your dedication, skill, and care even more as we watch you maneuver the uncharted waters of the end-of-year online education this spring!

Please know that we don't take your efforts for granted & are truly grateful.

We love you and miss you!! 💗💗💗

With much love & prayer,
Dalat PTO

P.S. It may have been a teacher appreciation week last week, but we want you to know that we appreciate you EVERY week!
