Editorial Guidelines for Guest Opinion Essays

Thank you for considering writing a 700- to 1,200-word guest opinion essay for Youth Today, one of four national news and photography sites published by the Center for Sustainable Journalism.

Here are our guidelines:

Submitted opinion essays make a fact-based argument that draws on the writer’s experience and expertise. They are crafted in a conversational tone that a broad array of readers can readily understand.

Along with your submitted essay, please explain how your professional or personal background connects you with the subject you’re writing about. Send your high-resolution headshot and a brief bio.

Please be certain that your submission wholly represents your original work, and properly credits the persons whose research, et cetera, you also may be citing as you make your persuasive argument.

Please include hyperlinks, parenthetical comments and so on that help confirm your assertions. Please ensure the accuracy of your assertions before you submit the essay. Submissions that are chosen for publication will be rigorously fact-checked and edited in accordance with journalistic style and standards.

Submission Options:

  • Email your submission to editor@csjournalism.org.
Please use this for email subject line: “Guest Opinion Submission: [TOPIC]”
  • As an alternative to email, you may use this form to submit your essay.

Given the considerable number of submissions we review, we may not be able to respond to everyone who submits. If you do not hear from an editor in our nonprofit newsroom within 14 days, we understand that you may choose to submit your essay for consideration at a different publication.

Like most mainstream news organizations, we do not pay opinion essay writers.
