Early Childhood Ireland members receive a hard copy in the post of Early Times, Early Childhood Ireland’s magazine, as a membership benefit. The purpose of the Early Pedagogy supplement is to promote reflective and critical thinking for members. To celebrate this first issue of Early Pedagogy Times, we have made the very first edition of Early Pedagogy from Spring 2019 free for all to access here

This issue hears from influential women that have helped to shape and transform ECEC practice at home and abroad, including: Wendy Lee, New Zealand; Dr. Carmel Brennan, Dr. Ger French, Professor Emer Ring and Professor Nóirín Hayes, Republic of Ireland; provider and Early Childhood Ireland member, Mag Coogan; Cathy Nutbrown, UK; and our own Milica Atanackovic. We salute these women who, in this issue, illustrate through their experiences and expertise that the professional learning journey is continuous, and enriched through co-construction with babies and young children, self-reflection, engaging with quality research evidence, and continuous practice.

We love to research for new ideas and perspectives, and to find resources to improve teaching and practice.

Better Start, Ireland’s national ECEC quality development service, website now provides access to free online CPD. This is a great opportunity to participate in free Lámh training and explore Hanen and AIM resources over the coming months, and much more.

“No computer can ever learn as well as a two-year old can learn”.

This is what Professor Alison Gopnik, world-renowned professor of psychology and affiliate professor of philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley, told Dr. Carmel Brennan when Early Childhood Ireland hosted the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) 2016 conference.

If you missed our face-to-face interview with Alison you can watch it here. May we never lose our wonder at how sophisticated and complex babies’ and young children’s learning, thinking and behaviour are.

If you would like to learn more about how children learn and develop through play through the lens of Schema Theory, check out this webinar from the USA. It’s an interview with Deb Curtis, the author of Lively Minds. You can register to view a recording of this past webinar through this link.
These are difficult, stressful times for us all: young children, providers, educators, parents. COVID 19 came upon us so quickly. Many of our members report missing the babies and children in their care, and children miss their carers and their friends in settings. Early Childhood Ireland members are finding innovative ways to keep connections with children and parents alike.

Orlagh Doyle of Carraig Briste and Killegny Early Years Settings, in Wexford shared her story:
The arrival of covid-19 had left us bereft and like everyone else, it really shook us to the core. As the dust settled in the second week of lockdown, we recognised the need for to reach out and offer solace to each other, the families and especially our children of Carraig Briste. As adults we felt confused and anxious, it was unimaginable what this might feel like for a child.

In a virtual meeting through WhatsApp, we discussed possibilities and achievable ways going forward of staying connected with children and families. One idea was to connect by videoing a short clip of ourselves in our home environment, as a shared message of how much we miss them and us doing a big clap for the children for staying at home too. This was an incredibly simple idea that brought so much happiness and reassurance. As a team it was a lot of fun. The idea has evolved in the past weeks and grown way past expectations. Now daily Early Years Educators host baking mornings, gardening in the green house, out on the farm and bedtime stories... our families and children are very grateful of how we stay in touch.

We use a couple of different platforms [with parents].  The most popular is an inhouse app namely 'Child Diary'. Every parent has one/one contact basis or through a group with us using photo and video. Facebook is also set up as a private page with family and associated members of the setting allowed access.

Some feedback from our parents:
