Forage for Off-Range-Holding Should Be Sourced on Public Lands

Taking THIS Action requests your representatives use their power in the Appropriations process to direct the BLM to STOP BUYINNG HAY FROM PRIVATE PRODUCERS. Congress CAN amend the 2025 budget for the BLM with language requiring the forage required to meet the nutrition needs of horses removed from public lands be PRODUCED ON PUBLIC LANDS.

The lifetime projected nutrition cost for Wild Horses and Burros removed from public lands is $3-4 Billion.  The nutrition needs of animals removed from public lands is protected under the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act (Public Law 92-195). 

The current method of meeting the nutrition needs of animals removed from public lands is to obtain forage produced on private lands – a supply driven marketplace.  The impacts to taxpayers are STEEP INCREASES IN COSTS when the BLM WHB competes in the cash crop market for forage.  The cost of providing nutrition for Wild Horses and Burros in Off-Range-Holding is soaring annually. This message requests Congress to direct the BLM that meeting nutrition requirements be produced on BLM managed public lands. The message to Congress, requests using Congressionally Directed Spending amendments to the 2025 Department of Interior Budget – mandate the forage required to be sourced on BLM managed public lands.
