C.A.R.E.S. Competencies

The Fly Five curriculum is standards aligned, with competencies and developmentally appropriate grade-level skills that students can practice in and out of school. These SEL competencies, known as C.A.R.E.S., guide educators in creating actionable learning opportunities that prepare every student for academic and behavioral success. Fly Five’s SEL standards are divided into five C.A.R.E.S. SEL competencies, which are cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control. Learn how your state’s SEL standards align with Fly Five.

Fly Five in Action:

Success Stories from the Fly Five Classroom

The Fly Five Success Stories highlight the real-world experiences of Fly Five practitioners who are implementing the curriculum to address challenges in the field. In our first Success Story, Solving the Four Square Conflict, we follow two Fly Five educators, Ina and Laura, as they turn a popular game of Four Square into an opportunity to put their students’ SEL skills into action.

By using the Fly Five conflict-resolution steps and vocabulary, their students were able to practice and build assertiveness skills such as seeking help and problem-solving. Deepening their competence, students in Ina and Laura’s classroom wrote a pledge dedicated to making four square fairer for all players.

Watch this video to see how Fly Five resolves conflict resolutions!

“We went around in a circle talking about four square and how they feel six weeks after conflict resolution lessons…and they feel like it’s gotten better! Some have even said they walk by it and it doesn’t seem as stressful.” Ina Pannell-St. Surin

Fly Five Lesson Plan Implementation

In this Fly Five fifth-grade lesson demo, we follow Fly Five educator Ina Pannell-St. Surin, as she implements a lesson on assertiveness, where learners practice the aligned standard “Expressing Strong Emotions and Opinions Effectively.”

Watch as Ina utilizes the Fly Five curriculum to introduce new content, model effective strategies, and facilitate learning activities to promote student understanding and exploration of the standard.

Explore Our Research

Our curriculum is designed to support the Fly Five Theory of Change, which targets positive outcomes for teachers, students, and families alike. By supporting the development of SEL competence, educational stakeholders can improve student behaviors and academic performance.

In a recent study, we examined the effectiveness of the Fly Five curriculum in three international schools. Data highlighted SEL skill improvement, increased student engagement, and strengthened sense of school belonging, among other positive outcomes. This research is part of an ongoing study exploring how Fly Five builds students' SEL competence and leads to positive behavioral and academic outcomes. Check out the details of the study below.
