Have you thought of boarding? Marlborough College tells us modern boarding is very different from the past. Full boarding is right at the heart of the Marlborough College ethos. We believe that it enables our young people to develop into rounded and confident adults, who understand others and how to build relationships of different kinds, and who are socially aware and outward looking. It makes us more than just a school; we are a twenty-four hour, immersive, vibrant educational environment in the broadest possible sense of the word “educational, and we are an extension of family and home. The pupils who are successful here are the ones who want to embrace the opportunity full boarding offers: to live in a community where learning, personal growth and exploration are the top priorities; where academic programmes and cocurricular activities are abundant; where making friends is paramount; where support is all around them and every success is celebrated.

visits are encouraged and exeat weekends mean that pupils return home every third weekend for quality family time. The most important opinion is that of our pupils

School Work During the Holidays?

Supporting Secret Learning

By Murray Morrison

By Dr Amanda Gummer

When the whole of the summer term has felt like a halfway house between school and holidays, many families are beginning to wonder whether they should continue some element of school work through the summer break. So, what should the plan be?

We’ve all mashed up veggies and hidden them in pasta sauce. Well, the same can be done with learning! Hiding learning within play is a much less stressful way of helping children to keep learning whilst they are not at school, especially for reluctant students. READ MORE

EDUCATION

A brand new academy in Clapham Harris Academy Clapham is a brand new, co-educational secondary school opening in September 2020. Their state-of-the-art, superb new building is in the final phase of construction on Clarence Avenue in Clapham, SW4. They will welcome their first-ever Year 7 students (all 195 of them) in September and then will grow by a cohort each September—meaning that when their first intake of Year 7s are in Year 11, the academy will be full. They told Families: “Our affiliation with the Harris Clapham Sixth Form opening on Kings Avenue in September 2021, ensures that our students can continue their studies with Harris in Years 12 and 13. So we very much see our students as being on a 7-year journey with us. Our vision is that ‘everything is possible’. Our students will be ambitious for themselves; they will work hard and be supported in turning their dreams and aspirations into a reality. It is this vision that underpins the five values that staff and students at the academy will uphold:

can and will go on to achieve their ambitions; • Honesty – to act with integrity, treating others the way they would like to be treated; • Excellence – to never settle for second best or for the easiest option; • Having a global view – to understand their place in the world and how they can make it a better place.”

• Endeavour – to relish challenge, never give up and learn to take sensible risks; Ambitious curriculum for their students They will teach all the subjects you would • Self-belief – to believe that they expect, but with an additional focus on enabling students to master at least one foreign language. In Years 7-9, students will study both Spanish and Chinese Mandarin, before they select one of these for their GCSE studies. They also have an extensive enrichment programme. Places They are full for September 2020 – both in terms of staff body and students - there are a number of students on a waiting list. Visit www.harrisclapham.org.uk for planned open events for the September 2021 intake. 10 Summer 2020

There is a warm and welcoming culture, staff know the children and families well, and as one parent told me, ’When I drop my child off at Effra it's like leaving him with my family.’ The very exciting curriculum ensures that children are highly motivated and very keen to join in. By the time children leave the Nursery they have acquired the confidence and skills to access the Reception curriculum.

Stop the Covid slide

Saving our teenagers’ education before it’s too late. The damage The extended summer break always causes a headache for teachers as pupils bury their schoolwork under festival tickets and beach holidays. Research has shown that, typically, a 6 week interlude from schooling wipes out 2 months of educational growth. In the aftermath of COVID-19, the losses to learning following 24 weeks of school closures in the UK could prove catastrophic. Alarming studies have predicted that students could lose between half and all of their annual mathematical growth from the previous year. This is particularly concerning for pupils who were due to spend March-June solidifying their GCSEs Maths syllabus before their exams, laying the foundations from which to springboard into the more challenging A-Level course. They have only been exposed to calculus and advanced trigonometry through online seminars. Online learning falls short: individualised queries and confusion are almost impossible to address in the cacophony of a group video call.

This summer presents the perfect opportunity for a bespoke Maths tutoring programme to make an overwhelming difference to students’ development - only this can aid the pupils’ seamless transition back to school in September. For more information contact learning@ mykidstutor.co.uk, or call Nicola 078876346779 Visit www.mykidstutor.co.uk for more blogs about The Covid Slide.

The cancellation of exams, and by extension revision, has removed the impetus for pupils to practice problems and equations over and over again in order to gain a deeper understanding of the mathematical process. The solution Come September, pupils going on to study Maths at A-Level (a challenging course at the best of times) will find themselves on a steep uphill climb.

With the absence of face-to-face learning and the mental strain of staring at screens, students are more than ever likely to feel disengaged about their school work. While Humanities pupils can make a significant head start by tackling a summer reading list, in Maths there is no equivalent solution. The need, therefore, for high-quality face-to-face Maths tuition has never been greater. Maths requires a tailored approach where the unique learning approach of each pupil is central.

WORK

Avoiding Home Working Hell…. By Mandy Garner Working from home is the nirvana parents have been waiting for, right? Well, maybe, but NOT when combined with looking after children full time. Here are some tips on successfully working from home as the school holidays and exhaustion kick in. Manage expectations - not just those of your employer, but your own and those of your family. Creating a routine that allows you to work can help everybody. For instance, some quiet time after lunch when your children know that you will be making phone calls. Ask your manager if you can work around your childcare responsibilities, perhaps in the evenings or at weekends, tag teaming with your partner, if you have one. Or consider reducing your hours if this is affordable, and explore this with your employer. As with flexible working negotiations, if you spell out the issues, explain how you are trying to tackle them and suggest potential workable solutions, managers are more likely to listen. The right set up - it’s not just about the hours you can work. You need the right long term setup, given fears of commuting and 40 Summer 2020

a second wave of infection. Can your employer help with technical support and ergonomics? It’s sensible to have a back-up if your laptop goes down or to have someone you can call with technical issues. This is far less stressful and time-consuming than trying to work things out for yourself from YouTube tutorials. You also need the right workspace and furniture. There are reports of increased back pain as a result of people working from sofas or beds during lockdown. Ask your employer for support - it’s a health and safety issue - and for help with work-related phone/internet bills if they don’t provide phones and laptops. READ MORE
