The situation is deteriorating rapidly, with scientists warning that we are nearing the point of no return. If we persist on our current trajectory, it’s projected that we’ll heat the Earth by an additional 2.5 degrees Celsius by the 2030s. This could lead to even more severe weather abnormalities, such as intensified storms, flash floods, and widespread droughts, all consequences of climate change.

The Necessity for Sustainable and Green Tech

Addressing the current climate crisis is a daunting task. Sustainable and eco-centric policies must strike a balance between global demand and local needs, particularly in the energy sector. While developed countries have the luxury of transitioning to greener renewable energy, developing nations still rely on coal and fossil fuels as they gradually build up their infrastructure.

Another challenge plaguing global sustainability efforts is the economic capacity of a country’s population. A recent study found that the Philippines was the leading country contributing to plastic waste in the world’s oceans. Most of these wastes originate from plastic sachets used for food and cleaning products. For many, these sachets are a lifeline, being the most affordable products on the market.

In recent years, we’ve seen companies pledging to achieve either carbon neutrality or net-zero emissions in production. Companies have re-evaluated their production systems to incorporate more sustainable practices.

We’ve seen products made from upcycled materials, ranging from plastics and scrap metals to clothes and other organic materials. In the tech world, products made from ocean-bound plastic have been produced as part of companies’ commitment to more sustainable production. Others have initiated their e-waste collection systems, where they upcycle materials (mostly internal components) to fulfill their net-zero promises.

Of course, Green Tech is not without its flaws. As consumer demand for ethical and environmentally friendly products increases, companies have exploited these demands to either cut costs, raise prices, or even outright deceive consumers.

Greenwashing, also known as green sheening, is the practice of conveying a false impression or misleading information about how environmentally friendly a company’s products are. Greenwashing companies often use their substantial marketing budgets to promote themselves as environmentally friendly when, in reality, they are doing the exact opposite.

Energy companies were the pioneers of Greenwashing in the 1980s, with major oil firms spending billions on marketing their corporate social responsibility campaigns. However, these were merely PR stunts intended to convince the public that they were superior to their competitors.

Greenwashing remains a significant issue today, but fortunately, others have stepped up where these companies have fallen short.

The Future of Sustainability and Green Tech

As the world strives to meet the growing demand for sustainability, Green Tech will be at the forefront of change.

Thousands of Green Tech startups have taken up the mantle of creating sustainable solutions for the escalating climate crisis.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are leading the charge in green innovation. While not entirely green, EVs are the world’s primary solution for reducing carbon emissions. Alongside EVs is the gradual shift of the grid to renewable energy. We’ve seen an increasing number of companies investing in solar solutions to generate electricity, not just to power their homes, but also their offices and plants.

Addressing the agricultural problem for sustainability is the development of vertical farming. Vertical farming is the practice of farming on a vertical surface rather than the traditional horizontal. This reduces the necessary space for farming yet retains the same yield (sometimes even more) to sustain our needs. Vertical farming takes place in a controlled environment, which means that producers are placed in their most productive environment without any risk of damage from the elements.

For livestock, researchers have begun experimenting with lab-grown meats. While still in its infancy, this technology could mean that we can soon create artificial meat, reducing the need for grazing pastures. Another development is improved vaccines and disease detection. Livestock deaths are one of the leading producers of greenhouse gases in the livestock sector. As diseases plague farms, greenhouse gas emissions increase. Improved nutrition and vaccination mean that livestock are healthier, which also leads to more livestock yields and produce.

Green Tech will be at the forefront of our fight against the current climate crisis. While it’s commendable that companies and startups are doing their part, we must also recognize that we all have a role to play. Changing our consumption choices to more eco-friendly options and doing our part in reducing pollution and carbon emissions is the first step to averting the impending climate catastrophe.

In today’s world where environmental consciousness and care are more important than ever, smartphone marketing efforts— from ads to packaging—have slowly but surely been integrating more and more buzzwords related to climate change and sustainability. After all, the information and communication technology (ICT) industry’s environmental footprint cannot be ignored.

According to a 2023 press release from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ arm for ICTrelated matters, the sector is estimated to be responsible for between 1.5 to 4% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. From the extraction of minerals from the Earth, the energy-intensive manufacturing processes for components, and even the logistics of shipping units from the factory to your doorstep: all these taken together equate to significant environmental impact. Not to mention the amount of e-waste produced yearly, which according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) amounts to around 54-million metric tonnes annually.

How can we then discern whether the eco-friendly claims in marketing efforts are legit or just greenwashing? Arguably, this starts with knowing what the jargon actually means and how these apply in the context of smartphone production and usage. Let’s delve into some of the terminology and uncover how these concepts are applied in the tech industry’s pursuit of a greener tomorrow.

Net zero, carbon neutral, and absolute zero, and carbon neutral

While all refer to a state where there is virtually no more emissions — such as carbon dioxide, methane, or sulphur dioxide — attributable to activities, there are distinct differences. Net zero specifically refers to when companies reduce a major amount of its emissions within its value chain, with any remaining amount neutralized or balanced with equivalent GHG removal measures within a specified time period. Emissions can be reduced through means such as improving carbon sinks (such as forests, which remove carbon dioxide via photosynthesis) or capturing, storing, and then converting GHGs into fuel or energy. Hence the term “net”.

‘Carbon-neutral’ does not specifically pertain to avoiding emissions through GHG-free value chains. Rather, first, it is a term that only refers to carbon emissions. Second, companies aiming to be carbon neutral can still technically emit as much carbon as they want as long as they are able to offset the same amount of carbon inside or outside their value chain. Meanwhile, absolute zero refers to the complete absence of GHG emissions from human activities.

Absolute zero is nigh impossible to achieve. As such, net zero and carbon neutrality is the more common goal for most companies inside and outside the tech industry. For smartphones, brands often aim to reduce emissions throughout the entire product lifecycle, from manufacturing to disposal. One of the ways they do this is by using renewable energy sources and using energy-efficient practices in their manufacturing facilities, recycled materials in product components, or producing more energy-efficient smartphones. For carbon offsetting, brands can also choose to invest in renewable energy projects that are not tied to their grid, embark on reforestation activities, or capture carbon dioxide from the air directly, among others.

Sustainable packaging

In addition to making the smartphone-making process as eco-friendly as possible, manufacturers have also started to package them in sustainable materials to further minimize their environmental impact and waste. These solutions include utilizing recycled, recyclable, or biodegradable materials, minimalistic box designs, using biodegradable soy ink for prints (which are more eco-friendly to produce and use), and removing plastic wrappings. The World Economic Forum in 2020 reported that over 400 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced yearly, and around 50% of that is from packaging. Using more sustainable packaging means less GHG emissions but also lessens tech-related waste leaking into the environment.

Managing e-wastes

According to a 2021 Deloitte article, most of a smartphone’s GHG emissions come from its creation. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley reported that in 2020, the average lifespan of smartphones worldwide before they are replaced was just over 33 months. Therefore, ensuring that units are able to last for years at a time greatly contributes to lessening its environmental footprint per year. This could be achieved by making smartphones physically more durable, lessening the need to replace consumable parts or prematurely replacing the unit altogether, offering better and longer operating system support to ensure that it does not feel outdated even after years of use, and even establishing “certified refurbished programs” to give devices a new lease on life either in another market segment or another country.

Understanding sustainability jargon such as the ones above is important for us consumers to better discern what a company is saying versus what it is actually doing in the fight against climate change. With the industry’s significant environmental footprint and the mounting challenges of e-waste, informed consumers can drive demand for truly sustainable practices, from production to packaging to end-of-life management. This awareness is an important first step towards shaping a greener future for all.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION THROUGH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

EPSON PARTNERS WITH ASEAN FASHION DESIGNERS SHOWCASE TO PRODUCE SUSTAINABLE FASHION COLLECTION

EPSON, a global leader in professional printing, has announced its collaboration with ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase (AFDS) to raise awareness on sustainable fashion through innovative technology.

As part of the collaboration, Epson partnered with seven local designers from Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand,

and Vietnam to create a unique fashion collection with a sustainability theme that ties in with the cultural roots of their respective countries. The full “Sustainability in Asia” collection will be unveiled during Epson’s LFP Innovation Day in Bangkok on March 21, 2024. Leading up to the main event, the designs will be showcased at their respective country’s Epson Solution Centers across the region.

The designers are leveraging Epson’s line of dye sublimation printers including SureColor SC-F6430, SureColor SCF9430H and SureColor SC-F10030 to produce bright and sharp color apparel pieces for these unique collections.

Filipino designer Dave Ocampo represents the Philippines at this year’s AFDS. Ocampo focuses on creating ready-to-wear styles that are both

wearable and classic, while also prioritizing sustainable practices by sourcing fabrics locally and supporting local communities. His designs aim to make fashion accessible to the public, emphasizing sleek and timeless silhouettes.

“The collection aims to showcase the beauty of the Philippines through colors, symbols, and patterns,” shared Ocampo. “The design highlights the Philippines’ very own colorful festivals, cultural symbols that are deeply rooted in its history, and patterns that are uniquely tied to its heritage and identity. Partnering with Epson for digital textile printing allows us to bring the details and vibrant colors to life.”

Sublimation transfer is an easy printing method in which the design is first printed on a dye sublimation transfer media. Using

only a combination of heat and pressure, the design on this media will then be transferred directly onto the fabric. With this method, the ink will be bonded to the fabric, resulting in permanent, vibrant prints that are fade-resistant.

Unlike conventional printing which requires a substantial amount of water for fabric preparation, dyeing and rinsing, digital textile printing that uses dye sublimation is a more environmentally conscious approach for apparel companies as it produces less waste. It also minimizes overproduction as designers can produce printed fabric as required. This ensures fashion designers will be able to maintain a sustainable textile printing business while significantly reducing the cost as well as environmental impact.

Additionally, going digital enables designers to have full creative freedom to print anything imaginable and ondemand. The technology allows them to create and produce complex designs, giving designers endless variations and options that suit their respective tastes.

SMARTPHONE

HONOR’s Xa-series smartphones impressed me last year. HONOR’s entry to mid-range lineup was reasonably priced and each model had its niche special feature. Among the standouts last year was HONOR X8a, an entry mid-ranger with a massive 100-megapixel camera that shot out the competition. This year, the HONOR X8b is a worthy successor to the X8a.

DESIGN

In the looks department, the HONOR X8b retains the X9a’s design aesthetic. It retains its iPhone inspiration with its (albeit now more subtle) boxy design. The inspiration is a bit more apparent in the selfie camera’s notch but more of this later. The phone comes in Glamorous Green, Cyan Lake, Titanium Silver, and Midnight Black. Our review unit came in the phone’s flagship Glamorous Green color, the only color scheme with a vegan leather back.

Last year when I reviewed the HONOR X8a, I remarked that while I wasn’t a fan of the boxy design, the lightness made up for it. Well, the HONOR X8b has improved on this—it’s a bit smaller than the X8a, which now allows me to properly hold the phone with one hand. Plus, the leather back feels great when you’re just lazily scrolling through the web or social media.

HONOR improved the X8b display, which now sports a 6.7-inch Bright AMOLED screen. It has an FHD+ (2412 x 1080) resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate and 2000nits peak brightness. Even though it’s bright, the display is also safer with 3240Hz PWM dimming that minimizes flickers for less eye strain.

Found on the display is the unique camera notch. The notch doubles as the HONOR Magic Capsule that allows certain apps to display notifications. Think of it as something similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island feature.

For a general overview of what’s on the phone: on the left is the SIM card tray, and on the right is the volume and power button. The power button doubles as the side-mounted fingerprint reader. Beneath are the USB-C charging port and the single downward-firing speaker.

HARDWARE

The HONOR X8b is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor. The Snapdragon 680 is a two-year-old processor, but don’t let age fool you as it can still keep up with its younger peers. Paired with the processor is 8GB of RAM and a monster 512GB of internal storage.

What made the HONOR X8a stand out was its massive 100-megapixel camera. This year, HONOR stepped up by equipping the HONOR X8b with a 108-megapixel main shooter. In addition to the main camera, there’s also a 5-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. The massive camera update comes in the front camera: it now sports a 50-megapixel selfie camera.

Photos come out great when taken in well-lit situations. Lowlight is a bit noisy for my taste but still usable for social media posts. The selfie camera is also great, softening the image a bit without the harsh beautification found on other devices. As for video, the HONOR X8b still tops out at 1080p 30fps. There is still no stabilization option, so expect a rather bumpy video if you’re planning to vlog with the device.

Battery-wise the HONOR X8b is fitted with a 4500mAh battery. The battery can last you a whole day of medium use (data, a bit of gaming, and streaming). Charging is also a breeze with the 35W HONOR SuperCharge.

USER EXPERIENCE

The HONOR X8b is a good option for those looking for an all-around smartphone on the cheap. It’s a great media device with an outstanding display, as AMOLED is still king when it comes to amazing colors. The audio is also pretty good despite the single downward-firing speaker.

In terms of gaming performance, the HONOR X8b is a decent gamer. The Snapdragon 680 shows its age when it comes to heavier titles like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, but lighter games like League of Legends: Wild Rift do okay.

The HONOR X8b stands out with its 512GB internal memory. The only smartphones I’ve seen

with this much memory are flagship-level devices which cost hundreds of thousands of pesos. To be honest, I think the 512GB internal storage is a bit of an overkill for the average user. That said, there are certain scenarios where I can see this being a great feature to have. I, for one, appreciate this humungous storage as I download a lot of content and transfer a lot of files.

If there is one disappointment I have, it’s with the HONOR Magic Capsule feature, for which I had great expectations, particularly app support. Unfortunately, it’s currently available only when you’re recording or using the timer. Hopefully,

moving forward, we will see more apps, like messages and calls utilizing this feature.

VALUE

The HONOR X8b retails for PHP12,999, a slight price increase over the HONOR X8a’s launch price. It has a lot of competition in its segment, with some sporting newer processors. Even so, the HONOR X8b has a lot of going for it. Its flagship level 512GB memory, 108-megapixel camera, AMOLED display, and leather back are features that make this phone a good deal for the price.

GAMING MONITOR

When it comes to monitors, I have always found myself at a crossroads. I want a higherresolution monitor and tend to gravitate towards 2K or QHD monitors. I also prefer one with a faster refresh rate for my gaming needs. Finally, I’d like a display panel with great viewing angles so I can continue watching movies even when I need to change spots. Unfortunately, as many enthusiasts know, combining all these attributes comes at a higher price range, with some costing an arm and leg for just a standard 24-inch monitor. Fortunately, smaller companies have started offering feature-packed monitors at more reasonable prices; among which is PRISM+ with their F240i gaming monitor.

DESIGN

PRISM+ is a Singaporean startup brand that offers various monitors for different price ranges. Most of their current line-up in the Philippines is directed towards gaming with higher refresh rates monitors.

Being a budget-centric monitor, you won’t get much when you open the box. Inside is a basic stand, which you assemble using the included screws. There’s also an included VESA mount which you can use in case you want to upgrade to a monitor mount instead of the included stand.

You also get a DisplayPort cable and the power brick. In terms of build quality, the monitor is mostly quality plastic with the stand being the only aluminum piece in the set.

The PRISM+ F240i has a 24-inch IPS panel with an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution. It’s also one of the brand’s fastest monitors with its 180Hz refresh rate. Bezels are fairly thin, thanks to the brand’s ZeroBezel design. Ports-wise, at the back you get an HDMI 2.0 port, a DisplayPort 1.4, and a 3.5mm audio port. Finally, there’s some lighting beneath the monitor.

HARDWARE

The PRISM+ F240i may be the best all-around monitor you can find at the entry to a mid-range price point.

Its 24-inch IPS display panel supports 120% of the sRGB color gamut. The display panel is also fairly fast for an IPS with a 180Hz refresh rate and a 1ms MPRT response time. There’s also a built-in adaptive sync feature, albeit very basic adaptive sync.

PRISM+ included several built-in profile settings within the monitor such as FPS mode, MOBA, RTS, and several customizable picture/ color profiles. There’s also an option to activate a crosshair in the middle of the screen, for FPS players who might need it.

USER EXPERIENCE

I always have some apprehensions about PC peripherals. Like many gamers, I want no compromises, especially for my investment in my gaming equipment. I have my doubts about cheap monitors, especially when it comes to quality. So I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the PRISM+ F240i.

The first thing that surprised me was how it looked when I first turned it on. The display is bright and vibrant. As an IPS

display, it has great viewing angles. Most monitors at this price range use either a TN or a VA panel which, while faster, really loses out in color and viewing angle.

I think that this monitor would be the perfect secondary monitor because of the IPS panel. As for color accuracy, the F240i can be quite vibrant in certain picture profiles. However, the colors may need tuning for graphic-sensitive work.

The second thing that amazed me is the customizability of the monitor. There are

a lot of personalization options in the monitor’s menu, allowing you to control the color hue, sharpness, shadow balance, and gaming features such as response time and adaptive sync.

In terms of ergonomics, the F240i is pretty basic. The stand only allows tilt movement. Height adjustment will need your creativity. Fortunately, I didn’t need to adjust the height since my desk is already fitted to my usual setting. For those who want to have a more ergonomic desk setup or want a vertical monitor, you might want to consider getting a monitor mount along with the monitor.

The F240i is a great fit for me. I gravitated to the “Natural” picture profile as it is more vibrant and a bit more colorful than my daily driver. For gaming, the monitor is capable of 180Hz, with games like Valorant fully taking advantage of this. But for other games, like DOTA 2 and Persona 5 Royal, it’s a bit of an overkill.

180Hz is a massive shift for people coming from a 60Hz, 120Hz or even 144Hz monitor. You’ll immediately notice that the display is much smoother than the slower monitors.

I was also pleasantly surprised 180Hz was stable on the PRISM+ F240i and I did not encounter any tearing whatsoever. Just a couple of years ago, even major brands had massive tearing issues with high refresh rate monitors, for PRISM+ to achieve this is a feat in by itself.

One of the major qualms I have about the PRISM+ F240i is accessing the settings menu. The way to access the menu is through the joystick at the back. Moving the joystick opens certain quick menus. It can get confusing, especially since you can see the joystick and move it based only on feel. I needed quite some time to get used to it.

Another thing to note here is the lack of instant access to adjust the monitor’s

brightness by default. The only way to adjust this is by going through the complicated menu and manually adjusting it there. You can change the quick menu to include brightness, but it still needs to go through the confusing menu setting. Once you get used to the complicated menu, navigation does become easier though I still get confused from time to time.

VALUE

Coming in at just PHP7,999, the PRISM+ F240i offers great value for those looking for a cheap yet performance-packed monitor. Combining basic features with necessary performance is perfect for gamers looking to upgrade their current setup.

NLEX ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY HUB AND PARK

NLEX Corporation recently inaugurated the NLEX Road Traffic Safety (RTS) Hub and Park in Dau, Mabalacat, Pampanga to further strengthen the company’s road safety advocacy campaign.

With its mission of providing safe travel to its stakeholders and continuously minimizing the number of road-related incidents, the tollway company has partnered with several organizations and government agencies like UNICEF, LTO, TRB, UP-NCTS, Imagine Law, and local government units in pursuing various road safety projects and programs such as the new RTS Hub & Park.

All ideas need inspiration—and in video games, inspiration can make something better for everyone. Games are often compared to other games when they come out. In some cases, those very games can equal or surpass that game in popularity or legacy. Counter-Strike is one of the first examples of a mod or similar game outpacing the popularity of their source of inspiration. It became the most popular Half-Life mod, even surpassing Half-Life itself in terms of legacy and popularity. Pocket Pair, the Japanese development team behind Palworld, is going the same route, even prompting Nintendo to investigate the game for any resemblances to Pokémon.

Palworld drops you into the Palpagos Islands. You can customize your avatar to fit your liking. You explore the islands by managing your own hunger, crafting tools, gathering materials, and building your bases to act as fast travel points on the islands. Of course, you also capture Pals with Pal Spheres. Your Pals can do battle with others, or even assist you with tasks such as scavenging for materials, crafting tools, and cooking as well. All Pals come with a Partner skill. Some can even be used as mounts for traveling or even as a weapon.

Pocket Pair CEO Takuro Mizobe said he drew inspiration from Ark: Survival Evolved, and others have compared game mechanics to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which immediately hit me when I stepped foot into the game. While starting at level 1, like in most other games, I was also taken aback when Pals at much higher levels were interspersed with lowlevel Pals. While I don’t expect

much from Early Access games (at least at the time of this writing), this did lead to me dying quite a few times as I pulled these high-level Pals by accident.

You encounter several factions that serve as the antagonists in Palworld. These factions include the criminal organization Rayne Syndicate; the liberation movement Free Pal Alliance; the fanatical group Brothers of the Eternal Pyre; the law enforcement-

esque Palpagos Islands Defense Force; and last, the Pal Genetic Research Unit. Each of these factions have powerful Pal trainers as leaders who reside in towers and are the game’s main boss battles. These factions can also be encountered as NPCs who fight the player with weapons. Similar to Grand Theft Auto, there is also a wanted level when you attack human NPCs.

The combination of so many game elements into one game can often be overwhelming to casual gamers, so recruiting powerful Pals and building up as many bases as possible are usually the keys to success early on. Crafting generates some experience, but even catching weak Pals such as a Lamball give astronomically more experience than crafting. You also have to build places for you and your Pals to rest and eat—a steady diet of Baked Berries may sound unappetizing, but it may also be the best way to satisfy you and your Pals.

Players also use technology trees to research new technologies that can help you craft better items or capture stronger Pals. In the early game, it’s absolutely necessary that you keep crafting spheres as they are the only way you can capture new Pals and increase your storage space as you can run into lots of items while exploring. You can also host as many as 32 other players on a dedicated server, but as of this writing you can only set up dedicated servers if you’re playing on PC. Personally, I found it better to team up in groups of four early on. Sadly, at the time of this writing, transferring a character to a new server is pretty cumbersome, but I hope there is an update to make the process smoother later on so that people can play with their friends.

Palworld takes elements from other games to make an enjoyable action-adventure slash survival slash monster farming game. It clearly takes inspiration from many games to the point where it is being investigated for copyright infringement. However, it is still an enjoyable experience as I went out into the Palpagos Islands, and after a few missteps, came to terms that this is a highly replayable experience. While it is far from a finished product, it is nonetheless one of the most enjoyable games of 2024 so far.

Bumble Inc. has announced its latest feature, Deception Detector™, building on its decade-long priority of building kind, safe, and authentic connections. Deception Detector uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help identify spam, scam and fake profiles, aiming to take action before members even see them. Within the first two months of the technology’s introduction, Bumble saw member reports of spam, scam, and fake accounts reduced by 45%.

Research from Bumble Inc. shows that globally, respondents cited fake profiles and the risk of scams as their top concerns when online dating. Almost half of women (46%) surveyed expressed anxiety over the authenticity of their

online matches on dating apps. This concern and anxiety can lead people to miss out on meaningful connections that can positively impact their lives.

Deception Detector introduces a fast, reliable machine learning-based model to assess the authenticity of profiles and connections on Bumble Inc.’s platforms. Of those accounts identified as spam/scam profiles, Bumble Inc.’s testing showed that Deception Detector supported in blocking 95% of these accounts automatically. This automated and AI-based technology is used in conjunction with dedicated human support to prioritize a safe and empowering community.

BURNOUT AND FATIGUE IN IT PROFESSIONALS

A Sophos report reveals that 94% of cybersecurity and IT professionals in the Philippines are impacted by burnout and fatigue, the highest in Asia Pacific and Japan

Sophos, a global leader in innovating and delivering cybersecurity as a service, released the findings of its fourth “The Future of Cybersecurity in Asia Pacific and Japan’’ report in collaboration with Tech Research Asia (TRA). The report found that 94% of respondents in cybersecurity and IT roles in the Philippines are impacted by burnout and fatigue, the highest among the markets surveyed. Across the region, an average of 90% of respondents in cybersecurity and IT roles are impacted by burnout and fatigue.

The study revealed that burnout is felt across almost all aspects of cybersecurity operations, with 88% of respondents in the Philippines saying that feelings of burnout increased in the last 12 months with 36% saying that this burnout makes them “less diligent” in their cybersecurity roles; 11% of respondents identified that cybersecurity burnout or fatigue contributed to, or was directly responsible for, a cybersecurity breach and 19% of companies experienced slower than average response times to cybersecurity incidents. Companies in the Philippines were the most impacted by lost productivity.

CAUSE OF CYBERSECURITY BURNOUT AND FATIGUE

The five leading causes of cyber burnout and fatigue in the report include:

1. A lack of resources available to support cybersecurity activities

2. The routine aspects of the role, which create a feeling of monotony

3. An increased level of pressure from board and/or executive management

4. Persistent alert overload from tools and systems

5. Increase in threat activity and the adoption of new technologies that foster a more challenging, always-on environment.

The impact of burnout and fatigue on cybersecurity employees

The study revealed that in the Philippines:

• 36% felt they were not diligent enough in their performance

• 36% felt heightened levels of anxiety if subject to a breach or attack

• 23% experienced feelings of cynicism, detachment, and apathy toward cybersecurity activities and their responsibilities

• 17% of resignations were a result of stress and burnout

“When organizations struggle with cybersecurity skills shortages and an increasingly complex cyberattack environment, employee stability and performance are critical for providing a solid defense for the business. Burnout and fatigue are undermining these areas, and organizations need to step up to provide the right support to employees, especially when, according to our research, 11% of respondents identified that cybersecurity burnout or fatigue contributed to, or was directly responsible for, a cybersecurity breach,” said Aaron Bugal, field CTO at Sophos.

“This Sophos and TRA report provides timely insight into organizational cyber stress and demonstrates that things must change. Although there’s no simple fix, an attitude adjustment would go a long way to defining the right expectations for evolving into a cyber-resilient business. Boards and executive committees must drive change and demand responsibility from their deputized charges for better governance around cyber approaches. However, they need to clearly articulate their accountability in developing and maintaining a plan because cybersecurity is now a perpetually interactive sport – and there needs to be a team that provides adequate coverage around the clock.”

The impact of cybersecurity burnout and fatigue on business operations

There were four key areas where cyber burnout and fatigue had a direct effect on business operations in the Philippines:

• Direct contribution to breaches: 11% of respondents identified that cybersecurity burnout or fatigue contributed to, or was directly responsible for, a cybersecurity breach

• Slower response times to cybersecurity incidents: 19% of companies experienced slower than average response times to cybersecurity incidents

• Lost productivity: Businesses are experiencing a productivity loss of 4.6 hours per week amongst cybersecurity and IT professionals,

In Southeast Asia (SEA), according to LinkedIn’s latest Workplace Learning Report, an astounding 95% of Learning & Development (L&D) professionals believe that human skills are increasingly becoming

the most competitive in our economy. In particular, “Communication” has topped LinkedIn’s most indemand skills list across all countries in APAC — in the Philippines, Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Singapore. This is not surprising in a new world of work where AI tools are freeing time for professionals to excel in jobs only people can do, like building relationships and collaborating with others.

In addition, 40% of APAC hiring managers consider an individual’s potential for growth and ability to learn the most critical factor when evaluating internal and external candidates.

A large majority of companies in APAC (91%) are also focused on preparing their employees for the future world of work by enhancing their skills and capabilities, believing that this will lead to increased confidence and job security. In fact, APAC HR professionals are offering online training programs (44%), and internal learning and development sessions focused on generative AI (43%) to do so.

Close to 4 in 10 (37%) of hiring managers see career growth opportunities as key to retaining top talent, along with competitive salary and workplace benefits (39%). In addition, close to half (49%) of APAC employers believe that highlighting opportunities for career advancement and increasing internal mobility are the top two ways to attract talent. These findings suggest that organizations in the APAC region would do well to focus on internal mobility as a key strategy for attracting and retaining top talent in the years to come.

Bold and sleek, the Nike Air Max Dn marks a new generation in the footwear cushioning revolution that Nike began more than three decades ago, arriving with a reimagined platform for self-expression — and what it feels like to walk on Air.

Nike’s innovation, design, engineering, and research teams were fixated on creating a shoe with an incomparable look and feel. The solution is the development of Dynamic Air.

Appearing for the first time in the Nike Air Max Dn, Dynamic Air is realized in a new dual-chamber, four-tubed Nike Air unit designed for unreal comfort, a smooth stride and max bounce. The dual-pressure air unit is comprised of two pressurized chambers, each with two tubes. The two chambers are specifically tuned with higher pressure in the back two tubes (15 psi) and lower pressure in the front two tubes (5 psi). As you move, air freely flows between the tubes in each chamber. This setup allows air to respond to the pressure as you move, delivering a smooth sensation with every step that isn’t just comfortable — it’s interactive.

“We call it ‘dynamic motion,’” says Reggie Hunter, Product Director for Nike Lifestyle Footwear. “The independent setup of the chambers means that the air unit can respond to the load of your body with each step. Digital capabilities like Finite Element Analysis helped teams test the air unit more quickly and accurately before making prototypes for real-life testing in the lab. When testing the air unit’s durability, for instance, the team could digitally simulate a year’s worth of wear and tear on the shoe in just a few hours. Getting answers like these faster allowed the teams to gather athlete feedback even sooner, then continue the process: try, test, refine, repeat.

“Counterintuitively, these exacting methods of testing create more opportunities for us to be surprised,” says Kathy Gomez, Nike VP, NXT Footwear. “For example, in the Dn, you’d think the softest tube in terms of psi should go in the heel for crash landing and better transition. But actually, we found that transition was best when the firmest tube was under the heel and the softest was under the midfoot.”

Together, Nike teams obsessed every detail of the shoe to provide all-day comfort and style. A TPU shank arch clip provides structure and support around the midfoot, and a TPU heel counter supports the Achilles. Injected Phylon foam surrounds the air unit, providing comfort underfoot, while a street-ready rubber outsole wraps around the heel to provide traction and durability.

The upper also had to emote the dreamy, fluid feeling of that heel-to-toe transition. The material teams suggested using a modern textile featuring a haptic, textured overlay with a silicone finish. The air unit works in concert with every other shoe component, designed with the same level of innovation, science and research that goes into Nike’s elite performance shoes.

In ‘GG,’ actor Donny Pangilinan goes out of his comfort zone by portraying Seth, an introverted gamer who plays for a rookie esports team while experiencing various personal challenges.

Building Digital Skills Capacity Across Asia Pacific

For 26 years, Cisco Networking Academy has provided over 5.3 million learners in Asia Pacific with in-demand digital skills, including networking, cybersecurity, and data science. In FY23, the academy achieved a historic milestone by providing training to one million people in the region.

Amidst the heightened importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital era, most students in FY23 opted for cybersecurity courses over other curriculums. In the Philippines, 83,238 students received skills training in FY23 through 118 partnerships with institutes of higher learning and organizations offering Networking

Academy courses. Since inception, 37% of all students trained are females, with 97% of students obtaining a job and/or educational opportunity after completing their Networking Academy training.

PLDT, SMART, DA-ATI LAUNCH INNOVATIVE TECH TOOL FOR FARMERS

Leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc (PLDT) and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc (Smart), in partnership with the Department of AgricultureAgricultural Training Institute (DAATI), have launched an initiative that aims to provide tech access to farmers, especially in far-flung areas, enabling them to harness technology in pursuit of livelihood.

As part of its Digital Farmers Program (DFP), PLDT and Smart’s awardwinning digital inclusion program for farmers in partnership with DA, the telco launched FarmTech, a techdriven farmers training kit designed to empower and equip farmer groups and agri-coops in their digital literacy training programs for their farmer members even those in remote areas.

Receiving the very first FarmTech packages were two affiliate farm groups, Myriad Farms of Guimba, Nueva Ecija, and Samahan ng mga Pangulo ng Magsasaka of Morong, Rizal.

Each FarmTech package includes a tablet, 10 smartphones, a Smart Bro Pocket Wifi with Smart Prepaid load cards, an outdoor projector and projector screen, a rechargeable portable sound system, a flash drive containing multimedia learning resources and apps, and DA-ATI learning materials.

“There are a lot of apps and digital solutions we can tap and integrate into the DFP. With the help of PLDT and Smart, these can now reach the farthest corners of the Philippines,” said DA-ATI Director Remelyn R. Recoter, adding that she is hopeful that FarmTech would play a key role in

encouraging farmers to use technology in their livelihood.

Enabling the digitalization of farmers is PLDT and Smart’s integrated fixed and wireless networks across the country. “We at PLDT and Smart continue to invest in our infrastructure to provide meaningful connections to Filipinos across the country, furthering our livelihood and digital inclusion advocacies, especially for the agricultural sector,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and head of Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart.

“Hand-in-hand with our partners from DA-ATI, we hope to achieve our vision, which is to enable the digital transformation of farmer groups and agri coops all over the country to build a truly digitally-enabled agriculture sector,” she added.

Part of PLDT and Smart’s longstanding partnership with DA-ATI, FarmTech is the latest addition to DFP,

which was established by the PLDT Group and DA-ATI in 2019 to make technology and digital solutions more accessible to Filipino farmers.

Even as a country that relies heavily on its agricultural sector, Filipino farmers are among the most commonly marginalized in terms of economics and technology, as many are located in rural areas and unable to pursue further education. Aging farmers also tend to be tech-averse, preferring old-school touchpad phones over smartphones.

Empowering farming communities through digital tools and mobile technologies towards #SustainableAgriculture and #InclusiveGrowth is a key priority of DFP. SUN LIFE FOUNDATION TEAMS UP WITH FOREST FOUNDATION TO INCREASE CAPACITY OF CALAMIANES WATERSHEDS

Sun Life Foundation opened the year with an intensified commitment to make lives brighter for more Filipinos as it awarded a financial grant to the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (Forest Foundation), its collaborating partner in implementing the “Increasing Capacity of Calamianes Watersheds Towards Resilience” project.

The project aims to enhance forest management in the Calamianes Group of Islands through sustainable conservation and protection initiatives. This covers the Sinibayan Watershed in Brgy. New Busuanga, Busuanga; Mabentangen Watershed in Brgy. 6, Coron, Palawan; and Dita Watershed in Brgy. Malaking Patag, Culion, Palawan. Benefitting from this project are 4,362 households or a population of 18,904 individuals who reside in these neighboring barangays.

“No matter where you are, access to clean and potable water is a fundamental right for everyone,” says Kristine Dianne Millete, executive director of the Sun Life Foundation. “Through this project, we earnestly hope to improve and make the lives of the residents much easier by having clean, readily available, and sustainable drinking water now and for the future.”

TELEPERFORMANCE PARTNERS WITH PASIG CITY LGU FOR SKILLS TRAINING TO EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (STEP)

Following the launch of the Skills Training to Employment Program (STEP) in 2023, Teleperformance in the Philippines, a global leader in digital solutions, has sealed its commitment with the Pasig City local government unit through a recent memorandum-of-agreement (MOA) signing ceremony.

Present at the event were Mayor Vico Sotto, along with Teleperformance Philippines’ chief executive officer Rahul Jolly, chief people officer Jeffrey Johnson, and vice president of human resources and communications & marketing Rachel Majito-Cacabelos. They were also joined by Pasig LGU members Simon Gerard R. TP for All’s impact sourcing program marks a significant milestone in addressing unemployment and providing support for marginalized groups, such as Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), individuals from underserved communities, long-term unemployed individuals, and former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

“Our partnership with Pasig is a first for this program. This is a very exciting collaboration, and we cannot wait to see the transformative impact of TP STEP in the lives of Pasigueños,” said Chief People Officer Jeffrey Johnson.

“By equipping different impact groups with soft and hard skills, we are not merely training them to become employees, but we are also empowering these individuals to go

back and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” he added.

The TP STEP curriculum, meticulously crafted by the organization’s industry experts, is tailored to equip participants with the necessary skills to thrive in the contact center industry. In its test run in 2023, the organization helped 68 graduates successfully secure employment.

Recognizing the importance of forging partnership, CEO Rahul Jolly stated: “The curriculum that we developed at TP positions our learners for long-term success in their respective careers. A Second Chance for Impact Hires

In 2023, TP Philippines established partnerships with 24 communitybased organizations, LGUs, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) training centers. Among STEP’s successful graduates, present in the MOA signing event, are Dale Roland Montejo, Vivian Sulit, Keischia Mae Ganutan, and Rommuelle Jay Tabor.

Vivian, an ex-OFW from Dubai and now a consistent top performer of a retail account in TP Ayala, reflects on the impact of the program: “TP STEP has had a great impact on our lives. During the pandemic, we all struggled to find employment, and TP really opened doors for greater opportunities. The program made our return to work much smoother.”

“From a practical standpoint, the salary isn’t sufficient for aspiring teachers like myself. I needed to earn for my family, and TP STEP proved invaluable, especially for job seekers in the marginalized sectors of society,” said Dale, a customer service representative from TP EDSA Greenfield and an Education degree-holder.

Senior high school graduates, Keischia and Jay, also highlighted the program’s impact on their communication skills and self-esteem. “I never stepped out of my comfort zone before because I feared trying new things. I was scared of not being accepted at work, and I fumbled my interviews. Thanks to TP STEP, I gained the confidence to express myself,” Keischia shared.

Jay further adds, “There was a time when I attempted to apply for work, and I was extremely nervous. TP STEP was instrumental in improving my self-esteem and honing my Englishspeaking abilities. After gaining invaluable learnings from my mentors, I am more self-assured in handling questions and talking to different people.”

NUCLEAR POWER

Renewable energy has been a thing for much longer than you think, and many countries have attempted to leave fossil fuels behind as a strategy to combat global warming for decades. The Philippines, for example, has been committed to using various renewable energy sources, namely hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass, wind, and solar energy. Current Senate President of the Philippines Juan Miguel Zubiri, who has championed green causes in the country during his political career, said in an October 2023 press release, “If we can tap into the country’s vast potential of renewable energy, especially solar, hydro and wind power generation, we can greatly reduce electricity costs in the country. Not only will it have a direct benefit to the people, it would also create favorable conditions for businesses to thrive.”

But what about one of the most controversial energy sources: nuclear power? Nuclear power is considered high risk, high reward: it is renewable and sustainable. However, its track record is checkered with numerous

incidents that have caused politicians and environmentalists worldwide to shy away from using nuclear power. The events at Three Mile Island (1979), Chernobyl (1986), and Fukushima (2011) show that nuclear power has substantial safety risks. Despite these incidents and risks, countries like France have made considerable commitments to nuclear power. France currently generates around 70% of its electricity through nuclear power. The Philippines built its own nuclear reactor in 1976, but it has remained inactive, and debates on whether or not to fuel the plant continue to this day.

We also cannot forget that nuclear power has been used for destructive purposes. World superpowers such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia have nuclear weapons. However, there have been treaties to reduce the stockpiles of nuclear weapons owned by various countries. Geopolitical hotspots such as India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel also have nuclear weapons. Iran has a nuclear program and has even expressed the desire to

possess (and even use) nuclear weapons. However, as of this writing, it is unclear if they are capable of doing so, given the sanctions the United Nations has placed on the country. South Africa disbanded its nuclear weapons program in 1989 ahead of negotiations to end its racist apartheid policies. South Africa is also the only country in the world to give up their selfproduced nuclear weapons voluntarily.

The history of nuclear energy goes back to the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938, although that itself is a culmination of research that dates back to the 19th century. Nuclear fission can induce more nuclear fission, allowing a self-sustaining chain reaction. Combined with World War II, nuclear fission research accelerated with the first man-made nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1, in 1942. As with all things, this was also used for controversial purposes, such as the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of nuclear weapons. For several years, nuclear fission was used for constructive purposes and destructive ones. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 were also the only uses of nuclear weapons in war.

The Cold War again fueled nuclear power research for both constructive and destructive reasons. The United States Navy created the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, in 1954. They used a pressurized water reactor, the reactor used today for nuclear power generation. In response, the Soviet Union opened the Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant in 1954, the first nuclear power plant to generate electricity for a power grid. In 1956, the United Kingdom created the first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall, in Windscale, England—both to produce electricity and plutonium-239, again showing the dual nature of nuclear power and its use. The United Kingdom used plutonium-239 to help create nuclear weapons during the Cold War.

Opposition to nuclear power appeared in the 1960s, primarily due to the potential

of using nuclear power for destructive purposes, safety concerns, and the environmental impact of radioactive waste disposal. The United States and other countries controversially tested nuclear weapons around the world during the Cold War, while the aforementioned incidents of Three Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986 curtailed the adoption of nuclear power around the world. Italy even voted to ban nuclear power entirely in the country in 1990.

By the early 2000s, enhanced safety standards and concerns about using fossil fuels allowed nuclear power to once again flourish around the world. The 2011 Fukushima incident, triggered by one of the most powerful earthquakes in world history, caused Japan (and other countries) to re-evaluate their use of nuclear power. Germany, for instance,

approved all nuclear reactors to close by 2022 (which actually happened by 2023), while current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida started efforts to re-open nuclear power plants in Japan.

Nuclear power can be sustainable and productive if used for peaceful purposes and if safety is priority number one. However, people’s willingness to use nuclear power for destructive purposes, its checkered safety record, and its impact on the environment are among the points of contention when it comes to the debate over using nuclear power. Nothing has generated more controversy in the history of renewable energy than nuclear power. Still, advances in technology, safety, and the will to reduce fossil fuel consumption should help policymakers and the public re-evaluate their approaches to nuclear power.
