FEATURE STORY FINDING NEEMO ryan Holt | bakersfield condors

The old adage is “speak softly and carry a big stick.” For Markus Niemelainen, it’s more “speak softly and deliver a big hit.”

d-man in the AHL and has made his presence known in the NHL, developing quite a reputation for throwing big hit after big hit.

Yesterday, the 23-year old soon-to-be dad signed a two-year NHL contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers that will see him in the organization through the end 2024. Recently reassigned to the Condors from the Oilers, the man they call “Neemo” is part of a growing contingent of Condors who are pushing for full-time NHL jobs in the present and in the future. Since March 1, Vinny Desharnais, James Hamblin, Dmitri Samorukov, and Seth Griffith have all signed NHL deals keeping their commitment to the blue and orange strong. Niemelainen has been part of a quartet of Condors d-men to see the NHL this year, joining Samorukov, Philip Broberg, and William Lagesson with the big club. “I’m just trying to defend well,” he said recently.WATCH “Keeping it simple with the EVERY GAME LIVE The 6’5” Finn has been a revelation for the puck. I had to add the physicality to THEAHL.COM/AHLTV Condors and Oilers in his two seasons my game. Players are so skilled here. I as a pro. Drafted in the third round of can’t be a skilled player here.” the 2016, he has turned into a shutdown

FEATURE STORY He learned from one of the best in Dave Man- “The guys pass the puck so well in the son, his former coach in Bakersfield and now NHL, that’s the biggest difference. And you just have to be aware on the ice all with Edmonton. the time.” “You have to read the situation. You can’t (deliver big hits) all the time or else you’ll be out of the play. Just trying to read the play a bit to see where the puck might go. Dave has given me a lot of small details and has helped me improve my game.”

Niemelainen and the Condors take on a San Diego team tonight looking to jump start their push for a playoff berth while the Condors look to fend off challengers for home-ice advantage. And you can be sure, that with everything else he does, the soft spoken Markus will be reading the play, and waiting to deliver a big hit.

Spending time in both leagues in a season can be a challenge, but one that Niemelainen relishes.

Colby Cave Memorial Fund The Cave Family and the Edmonton Oilers have created the Colby Cave Memorial Fund to carry on the memory and legacy of Oilers forward Colby Cave who passed away suddenly and tragically on April 11, 2020. Proceeds from the fund will go toward community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children. Cave made a lasting impact both on and off the ice with the Edmonton Oilers and the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, and before that with the Boston Bruins organization and the WHL's Swift Current Broncos. Cave was a consummate professional, well-respected by teammates and opponents alike. He was also a committed and positive member of the communities in which he played, eagerly volunteering for charitable initiatives and always stopping to say hi to fans. Donations to the Colby Cave Memorial Fund are being accepted by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation in Colby's memory. click to donate now
