“Activists Voices from Colombia”

Colombia was the first country in the world to commit in its Peace Accord with the FARC-EP to there being no amnesties for conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence. It is also the first country to accept a macrocase (national case) in the Transitional Justice System of Gender on ‘sexual violence and crimes based on gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity’. This macro case will make it possible to investigate and prosecute sexual violence and other crimes related to gender, sex, orientation, or identity committed by all armed groups, legal and illegal, during the armed conflict

Despite the Colombian Peace Talks and the reduction of combat violence, women have experienced an increased level of conflict-related sexual violence from 149 (2000-2009) to 400 women per day (2010-2015). Sexual violence has been used as a strategy of terror in order to dominate and control populations in Colombia, according to the Colombian Constitutional Court it has been part of a widespread and systematic practice by all armed actors in the conflict both legal and illegal.

Join in a conversation with three Colombian human rights defenders Nasa Indigenous leader, Margarita Hilamo, Lawyer specialising in the Prevention of Sexual Violence, Carolina Solano, and Lizeth Trejos, coordinator of the Observatory of Human Rights and Violence against Women of the Association of Indigenous Councils of Northern Cauca.

The speakers will address the situation of the intersectionality of gender-based violence with a focus on indigenous communities and a feminist perspective on security and prevention.
