A new exhibition named The History of the Book is currently featured at Lee Wee Nam Library located at the North Spine, from 5 April 2021 to 5 May 2021.

It takes its name from the undergraduate course taught by Asst. Professor Katherine Hindley of the School of Humanities: HL3036 – The History of the Book. The artifacts featured illustrate how people have made, used, and disposed of their books from the medieval period to the present. Each item in the exhibition has been researched and analysed by students from the abovementioned course, and they were carefully chosen to showcase how book production changed over time and to explore broader questions about the nature of texts, their reception, and their associated communities and contexts.

There are four sections to the exhibition, each section revolving around a research topic taught in the seminar, and through their course of study, students have chosen items from the Library’s collection that best represents their topic in an easy to understand manner to the layperson. As part of their coursework, the students have learned to curate the items, write the exhibition labels, and decide on the manner and angle their chosen items should be exhibited – sharing their knowledge by putting to use these practical skills.

Research essays written by the students have been uploaded to a blog dedicated to the exhibition, and can also be read via a QR code at the exhibition.

Drop by to visit the exhibition to refresh your mind with new perspectives from old texts that tell the History of the Book.
