Hollywoodbets Durban July strides into a new era WITH an enthusiastic 35 000 strong crowd to guide him home, S’manga Khumalo wrapped up a second Hollywoodbets Durban July title when he rode Sparkling Water to victory at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Saturday. The Mike de Kock trained filly showed power and speed down the final straight to win the 2200 metre showdown in fine style, in front of fans for the first time since 2019. It was a second Durban July title for Khumalo, who won back in 2013 aboard Heavy Metal, while De Kock saddled his fifth winner of the prestigious title. The R5 million race saw Sparkling Water finish ahead of Jet Dark in second, while the pre-race favourite Safe Passage ended in third. The highlight of the vibrant fashion programme was the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award, presented by the Durban Fashion Fair, where Durban University of Technology’s Ismael Mchunu claimed the coveted first prize. He was followed by the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion pair of Slindile Ndlovu in second with Nhlanhla Dlamini finishing third. The ever-popular race day fashion programme returned after a two-year hiatus and enjoyed strong support. After her win in 2019, Makhosazane Ntshangase returned to win the Classic Racewear for Women category again and she also

managed to bag third place in the same category. “It’s incredible for me to come back and win again after 2019,” Ntshangase said with a smile. “It was a lot of work and I put in a lot of extra work on the fascinator that was on the winning garment, which is great. “I think next year I’ll give someone else a chance,” she added with a laugh. Winning the Most Striking Couple was Brenda Waring and Pamela Shabane – who also modelled her creation with Kent Hollenberg. In the Classic Racewear for Men, it was Sipho Mugazi who won with his outfit modelled by Qurin. In the final category, the Raceday Hat or Fascinator was designer Rutendo Dyirakumunda and model Khwezi Manzi who took home the prize. “I am incredibly happy to win this award,” Dyirakumunda said. “It means so much to me after all the work that I put into creating it and it’s a huge blessing for me.” With the fabled Marquee Village and hospitality suites packed with enthusiastic race-goers, organisers said the Hollywoodbets Durban July took a stride into a new era after its two-year hiatus of racing behind-closed-doors.

Meet all the Hollywoodbets Durban July 2022 fashion winners Thobile Mazibuko

ON July 2, eThekwini hosted one of the biggest race day events in Africa: the Hollywoodbets Durban July. The event happened at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, where guests were dressed to the nines, showing us their honey in stylish garb. As much as the event is about horse racing, it also has huge fashion elements to it, where designers participate in a fashion show while guests compete on who’s the best dressed. One of the biggest competitions this year was the highly anticipated Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair, which helps emerging designers launch their brands. Out of the top 10 who were competing for the award, it was Ismael Mchunu from the Durban University of Technology, who was crowned

the winner of the 2022 Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award. His interpretation of the 2022 theme ‘Show Me the Honey’ focused on the flower that bees pollinate. “For me, the theme was all about being sweet. My inspiration was the flower bud, and the concept was the beauty inside the bud of the flower when it is open.” He walked away with R50 000 in bursary support from the Hollywood Foundation. Meanwhile, Sandile Ndlovu, who came in second place, received R30 000 and R20 000 went to the second runner-up Nhlanhla Dlamini. There were also Raceday Fashion Awards, which comprised various categories such as the Classic Raceday for women, Classic Raceday for men, moststriking couple and the Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator.

The winners for these categories were: Classic Raceday for women Overall winner: Makhosazane Ntshangase First runner-up: Martin John Steenkamp Second runner-up: Makhosazane Ntshangase

Sparkling Water steals the show MIKE de Kock saddled his fifth winner at the Hollywoodbets Durban July when Sparkling Water sprinted clear of her field at Hollywoodbets Greyville. This was also the third time the master trainer had won the race with a filly after Igugu and Ipi Tombe and the second time for S’manga Khumalo, who was the first black jockey to win the race on Heavy Metal back in 2013. Sparkling Water challenged veteran galloper Do It Again approaching the 300m mark and drew off to win in commanding fashion. Jet Dark rattled on from behind to snatch third along with Safe Passage, with Do It Again relegated to fourth. There was drama at the start as Do It Again dislodged his rider and had to be reloaded after a vet check. It was not an easy day for punters as hot favourite Captain’s Ransom failed to hit the boards in the Gr1 Brentford FC Garden Province stakes. The race fell to the Gareth van Zyl-trained She’s A Keeper, who strode clear in the final exchanges to win as she liked from Marina, Under Your Spell and Captain’s Ransom.

The race was run at a pedestrian gallop and Richard Fourie was content to sit towards the rear seemingly confident that the favourite’s turn of foot would carry her home. It was not to be, as she ran on well enough, but the birds had flown and she could only manage a well-beaten fourth. It was a red-letter day for Glen Kotzen, as Ameena took the honours in the Gr2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper and stable companion Cousin Casey followed up in the Gr2 Durban Golden Horseshoe. The Golden Slipper looked to be a match between the two unbeaten fillies Maharanee and Sweet Pepper, but both were in trouble a long way out as Richard Fourie got Ameena to fire from off the pace and win going away from Woodland Retreat with Time for Orchids and Ride On filling the shallow end of the purse. The Golden Horseshoe was something of a family affair, with Glen Kotzen saddling the winner and his brother Nathan the runner-up Royal Victory. Cousin Casey is now unbeaten over 1400m and rider Grant van Niekerk labeled him as a “very smart horse” after racing three wide in the early exchanges.

Power duo: Sparkling Water and jockey S’manga Khumalo win the main race at the Hollywoodbets Durban July 2022.

Show me the honey – What the celebs wore Sorisha Naidoo

by Alyssia Birjalal and Oluthando Keteyi

Businesswoman and Real Housewives of Durban reality TV star, Sorisha Naidoo dazzled at the Hollywoodbets Durban July in a beautiful, over the top black and gold designer catsuit. The extravagant feathered arms completed her look. Her hair and makeup was also on point, but most importantly she was really the “honey” on her husband Vivian Reddy’s arm. Picture: Instagram

Somizi Mhlongo

When it comes to everything big and bougie, you best believe that Somizi is going to deliver the goods. He attended the Hollywoodbets Durban July in a designer outfit by his stylist Obakeng and his headpiece was designed by Anita Ferreira. Somizi admitted to being lazy with his outfit and that he took the “Show me the honey” theme literally. However, nothing about his attire screams lazy. The reality star was the host of DJ Tira’s Afrotainment Marquee. Picture: Alyssia Birjalal

DJ Tira

Thulisile Phongolo

Lerato Kganyago

Gqom producer and Afrotainment owner, DJ Tira decided to avoid the popular black and gold this year. He was spotted wearing a deep purple suit with black print on the jacket designed by House of Ole. A black bow tie with purple and black sneakers finished off the look. He looked extremely dapper and comfortable, which is what you need when spending long hours at an event of that stature. Picture: Instagram

Thuli blew all away with her amazing gold layered tail couture gown. She looks fit to sit side-by-side with the gods and definitely brought the honey. Thuli definitely brought the honey. The actress/DJ was dressed by OM Style Avenue and her makeup was done by Vanessa Gold, with hair by Dolce Looks. She finished off the look with a pair of gold pointed heels.

Media personality and businesswoman, Lerato Kganyago’s Hollywoodbets Durban July outfit screamed “honey bee”. Designed by prominent designer Gert Johan Coetzee, she wore a designer top that resembled a honeycomb with tassels acting as honey dripping from the comb. She also had an actual 3D bee-like cutout placed in the mid-bottom of the outfit. This paired sleekly with gold buff pants. She looked sleek and chic.

Thembi Seete

Bokang MontjaneTshabalala

The actress killed it in her designer pants suit. She was one of the very few spotted wearing a pants suit. I’m glad she tried something different. The embellishment on her coat/jacket made the garment extra glamorous. Her outfit may not scream “show me the honey” but it does look well put together. She looked comfortable and chic. Her suit was designed by Scalo Grandeur Couture with hair and makeup by Sarhap HairLine and Nikki Pitso, respectively. Picture: Instagram

Former Miss South Africa 2010 wore a beautiful bold gown designed by Bukky Group Fashion. On Instagram, she described herself as “A Black woman in black who is dripping melanin and honey”. When you think of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, you think big, bold, outrageous fashion, and the ruffles in Bokang’s dress really made the dress pop and her afro hairstyle brought the drama. Picture: Instagram

Mohale Motaung

Nandi Madida

Minnie Dlamini

If Mohale was still married to Somizi Mhlongo then we would have seen an entirely different dress code, something similar to Somizi’s. However, Mohale went for a less dramatic look this year, but that didn’t take away from him looking great. His perfectly fitted off-white suit gave him a clean and clear-cut look. The detail on the coat added a bit of pizzazz. Picture: Instagram

Singer and actress Nandi Madida stunned at the Hollywoodbets Durban July. She was dripping in gold in a figure-hugging custom Keys Fashion dress by Ryan Keys. The details of her outfit brought the honey and she really stuck to the theme and represented what bees are all about. Her gold and black custom headwear by JoZEEst was an excellent touch and brought flair to her blonde hair, which had a bee painted on it. It’s no surprise that she won Best Dressed at the Hollywoodbets Champions Room. Picture: @_umshuthi_/Busiswa Chiliza.

Media personality Minnie Dlamini went horseracing chic with her outfit; her look was comfortable and was perfect for the Hollywoodbets Durban July. She enlisted Jessica Jane Molebatsi to create a white number with glitter butterflies that showed off her hourglass figure. Couture hat designer Anita Ferreira created a hat that was something out of the box for Dlamini, the glass touch was certainly giving. Her look may have not been the most dramatic, but she brought some honey to the races. Picture: @minniedlamini/Instagram

Boity Thulo

Jessica Nkosi

LaConco

Zola Nombona

Chris Jafta

Robert Marawa

While an all-black dress is not the first thing that comes to mind when we think of ‘Show me the honey’, actress Zola Nombona certainly did. Nombona teamed up with Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs to pay homage to soccer club Orlando Pirates, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. The look was fun and showed off a playful interpretation of the Hollywoodbets Durban July theme. The overflowing black skirt also allowed Nombona to wear sneakers, which is a plus, especially with all the walking that comes with being at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse. Picture: KPAPARAZZI

Presenter and actor Chris Jaftha showed that yes, men do know how to put in an effort when it comes to their looks. Jaftha looked dashing in an Ephymola piece which had many finer details. A closer look at the E! presenter’s blazer showed some honey inspired features. One also couldn’t miss how the bees were interpreted, involving the crisscross detailing with the gold band. Jaftha was also spotted in a second look, a black and white print jacket by Khothatso Madumo. Picture: @chrisjaftha

You can always tell when effort is put into something and that’s exactly what comes to mind with sports broadcaster Robert Marawa’s outfit at the Hollywoodbets Durban July. He was showing the honey in his Naked Ape black and gold ensemble. Picture: Tumi Pakkies/African News Agency (ANA)

Rapper and reality TV star Boity Thulo enlisted Ryan Keys, who is one of her go-to designers, to help her take on the Hollywoodbets Durban July theme. Thulo showed the honey in a gold sequined mini dress, which showed off her gorgeous legs. The dress had wings, with the arms flowing, and every time she raised her arms they moved playfully. When she appeared at the 360 camera at the Hollywoodbets Champions Room, she showed all the honey in her outfit. Every Queen B deserves a crown; Thulo wore a champagne gold flower head accessory. Picture: @Boity/Instagram

Actress Jessica Nkosi’s outfit gave Queen B vibrations and it’s safe to say she executed the theme to perfection. Inside the Hollywoodbets Champions Room, she was hard to miss in her custom Ruberto Scholtz design. Nkosi worked with the designer when she was in Namibia in November last year and they reunited to execute a look for the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July. The honeycomb detail was hard to miss and with the black wings her dress featured, Nkosi’s look was giving and dripping with honey! Her interpretation of “Show me the honey” was spot on. Picture: Shingai Darangwa

Real Housewives of Durban star Nonkanyiso ‘LaConco’ Conco went playful with her outfit at the Hollywoodbets Durban July. She went for a bold lime number by myfashionlink, showing off her fun side. It seems Mge is stepping out of the box and going for choices that are showing a different side to her. Her dress had a playful feel to it and she was spotted laughing and smiling away at the prestigious racing event. The sequins and beading of her dress were well detailed – less is more – and suited her frame. As her cast mates would say, she was giving and serving honey. Picture: Mr pic cam

Ahead of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Oscar Mbo was one of the artists singled out as one to look out for. The DJ didn’t disappoint as he played at several different marquees, most notably Halisi Afrique, Afrotainment and Fact Durban Rocks.

One of the biggest stars of last year thanks to her smash hit major label debut single Phakade Lami, afropop star Nomfundo Moh was one of the main attractions at a star-studded Fact Durban Rocks afterparty at Moses Mabhida on Saturday.

Felo Le Tee was the star of the show at the Jagermeister Manifest marquee, which featured several big names. The Dipatje Tsa Felo hitmaker ran through his growing discography with the onstage charisma he is synonymous with.

Blxckie and Tresor were standouts among several esteemed performers at the Fact Durban Rocks after-party. Blxckie in particular was in top form as he performed some crowd favourites such as Kwenzekile, Ye x4, Big Time Shlappa and Mntase. Tresor followed up his performance with an appearance at Boomtown, where we caught up with him backstage to chat about his recent work on Drake’s album, Honestly, Nevermind.

Cassper Nyovest hosted an All White Nostra Durban July Takeover on Sunday. The party featured appearances from the likes of Blxckie and Dr Peppa.

Nasty C is another artist that was singled out at the start of the weekend as one to keep an eye out for. The Juice Back star put on a great show in front of an adoring crowd at the Boomtown marquee that sang their lungs out throughout his set. DJ Ph was undoubtedly the busiest DJ at the Hollywoodbets Durban July. He was booked to play at several marquees including Jazztown, Jagermeister, Boomtown, Pegasus Lounge, Chaise Lounge and nightspots around Durban such as Rooftop Bbq, Views at 25 and Kwa Ma X Lounge.
