About this event

Music is said to enhance intelligence and focus, improve mental health, and boost the immune system as well as self-esteem and confidence. It can be used to relax, boost and lift our mood, or to improve concentration. BUT — research has shown that people working in the music industry and music creators are more prone to mental health problems than the general population with musicians being up to three times more likely to suffer from depression. An interesting paradox, which we will explore in this panel discussion.

Ray BLK - “These conversations are so important to have in an industry that treats people as products. I’m happy to take part in this conversation with the hope that it will help towards creating change and bringing awareness to those working in the business that they have a responsibility to care for the well-being of those that create the art that they monetise.”

Jack Garratt said, “I'm so glad to be on this panel. Music and mental health go hand in hand, as artists so often use their mental health as a resource for their creativity. Given the music industry is designed to exploit those who create within it, it's so important that conversations like this happen, to take stock and listen to the thoughts of those having commerce generated from both their pain and joy.”

The Ivors Academy exists to support, protect and celebrate music creators in the UK. We are the independent professional association representing songwriters and composers in all genres, whether they create song, symphony or sync. Previously known as BASCA, we can trace our history back over 70 years. As champions of music creators, we have three main activities: campaigning, cultivating and celebrating.
