- I spent (and I’m not exaggerating) 2 weeks at the Melbourne Italian Film Festival each year and binge-watched 2, sometimes 3 movies a day!
I was desperate to improve my listening comprehension.
The result?
Yes, my listening skills eventually improved, but this wasn’t a very efficient way to do it.

I had to deal with regional dialects that even Italians need subtitles for (I’m not kidding), unfamiliar accents, complex topics, not to mention countless expressions that went way over my head. Sure, I took notes to look up later, but learning this way took its toll on me.

I needed to be consuming content appropriate for my level. A middle ground between where I was and where I wanted to be. I wanted to be challenged, but not drained.
That’s when I discovered “Comprehensible Input”.
What is Comprehensible Input?
Comprehensible input is a powerful learning theory developed by linguist Stephen Krashen. Krashen found that to learn a language you need material (or ‘input’) that is slightly more advanced than your current level.
Finally, someone understood my frustrations and had a solution!
This was the missing puzzle piece I was looking for!
The idea behind this theory is that you watch or listen to ‘input’ where you can understand what’s happening, but maybe miss some of the words here or there.
Krashen describes this as being one level above what you can understand.
By consuming content that is slightly above your level, means you learn the language naturally, rather than learn it consciously.
Comprehensible and Compelling
Krashen takes his theory a step further and states that your ‘input’ should not only be comprehensible but also compelling.
After all, if you’re not interested in the material, you won’t pay attention to it and you won’t learn.
Once I discovered this theory, I finally understood where I was going wrong.
All those movies, tv series I was watching, and radio programmes I was listening to weren’t just one level above my current level, they were miles ahead.
Pushing Past the Plateau
I knew that if I wanted to improve my listening comprehension and feel more confident understanding everyday speech, I needed to find material that I enjoyed consuming, so I would stay motivated.
It needed to be just long enough, so I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed and finishing it would give me a sense of achievement and a boost to keep going.
It needed to be relevant and based on everyday conversations that included common idiomatic expressions, so I could learn how Italians really talk and so I could sound more natural when I spoke too.
What I needed to find was the ‘Goldilocks’ of content.
Not too easy, not too hard. But juuuuust right!
I knew that this was already a tall order, but there were four other dream elements I knew, that if I had, would really push me past my listening comprehension plateau.
- I wanted it to come with a grammar reference guide. Something that would explain the grammar and so I could revise any points that I was a bit rusty on.
- I wanted a list of all the new vocabulary and expressions I was learning in one place, so I could easily revise them later.
- I wanted the transcripts in Italian, so I could compare translations and follow along.
- I wanted the transcripts in English too, so I could confirm my comprehension was correct and not waste time looking up words and phrases in a dictionary and online.
Needless to say, finding this kind of material was almost impossible and a very slow process.
There was a lot of trial and error and looking for a needle in the haystack.
It’s one thing to find ‘input’ but another thing entirely finding ‘comprehensible input’.
But I persisted.
Eventually, I made it work the best way I could. I asked for recommendations, scoured forums, created my own vocabulary lists, and asked friends to explain the new expressions I was learning.
I learned first-hand that when you have the right input and support, you not only boost your listening comprehension skills quicker, you feel empowered and more confident.
