About six weeks ago, I recorded a video of my “confession” that I had gotten completely off track with our whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet. As of that day (March 15, 2020), I am proud to say that I have been completely back “on track” with our WFPB lifestyle!

One of the things that cause my downward spiral was definitely CHOCOLATE. So when I decided to get back on track, I had to find a way to not completely eliminate it but also feel good about eating it. Enter… chocolate “nice” cream shake!

I made an executive decision that I wasn’t going to buy any more vegan peanut butter cups or chocolate bars. Instead, I would only eat chocolate in the form of unsweetened cocoa powder added to desserts.

I love making a large batch of my regular chocolate “nice” cream and storing it in the freezer, but back when we posted that video, one of our lovely viewers (Hi Olivia!) shared her favorite quick and easy version of “nice” cream in the form of a shake!

Since then, I’ve been playing around with the ratio of the ingredients, and I finally got it just right for my liking. Now, this doesn’t mean it’s going to be exactly how you like it, but it’s a good starting point! Any of the ingredients can be adjusted to make it suite your taste.

There are only 5 ingredients (if you count ice cubes as an ingredient): Unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, frozen bananas and ice cubes.

The bananas provide the creamy texture and give you just enough sweetness to balance out the cocoa powder.

My favorite cocoa powder to use is Hershey’s Special Dark, but I also recently got into the Santa Barbara Chocolate Company (thanks to Brittany Jaroudi). I ordered some of their vegan cocoa powder, which is really tasty, but a LOT more expensive than the Hershey’s Special Dark. Here’s a link for the Santa Barbara one in case you want to check it out. Brittany uses their unsweetened chocolate chips in a lot of her recipes.

This is the perfect cold, creamy, filling, just sweet enough dessert! Check out the video here and get the full recipe below.

Jessica's Super Chocolatey Nice Cream Shake

Ingredients

  • – 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • – 125-150g frozen banana (about 1 large banana)
  • – 1 to 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (adjust to taste)
  • – 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • – 6 to 10 ice cubes

Directions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender. You can adjust the amount of cocoa powder and ice to get the taste and consistency you like.
  2. Blend on high until creamy, about 60 seconds.
  3. Enjoy!

I’ve been making one of these after I eat my giant salad almost every single night since I got “back on track” and it has definitely helped! It is kind of a “reward” for myself at the end of the day for staying on track.

I hope you try it out! Watch the recipe video here and leave a comment if you do!

Hey there! I love your You Tube channel. The Chocolate nice cream recipe looks really good. I will try that this weekend if I get a hankering for nice cream or chocolate.
I have made strawberry banana nice cream, and it is okay.
I want to try raspberry almond, but worried how the seeds may affect the smoothness, and don’t think I want any banana flavor. What do you think? Do you think the almond flavoring would cover any banana flavor? Should I cook the raspberries and strain out the seeds? I am making this way to complicated.

    • Brian Krock says:

It kind of depends on your tastes. I taste banana no matter how Jessica makes it, but she swears she can’t taste banana at all. So, give it a go and see how it turns out. 😀

  2. Sapphires Rage says:

❤️ Love this! I’m going to make this tomorrow for my Saturday night treat! Thanks Jessica!

  3. Kathy Timme says:

I made your chocolate shake tonight & I agree that it is delicious! Thank you for all the delicious recipes you & Brian post for free. Love you guys!

  4. Felicia says:

I made the shake today. So yummy! Just the right amount of cocoa to banana ratio. Thank you for sharing delicious recipes!

  5. Phyllis says:

This looks wonderful! Can it be made in a food processor? We don’t have a blender and no space to store one. Now on WFPB diet and I miss ice cream.
    Thanks!

  6. Lauren Pigott says:

Jessica, I made this to test out my new blender! Woo! I added a little sweetener because I only had plain almond milk
So good! Rave reviews from my bf who doesn’t even like chocolate. Thanks!

  7. Meliorn says:

Was great!! I agree with Brian, it does taste like banana. Thanks for the recipe!

  8. Mary Lou says:

I needed something sweet tonight and remembered this. Quick and easy! And thick, so I didn’t drink it down in a few short minutes. Next time I may throw in a tablespoon of peanut butter, too. Delicious.

  9. Angie Brantley says:

Thank you for this! I’m three weeks in, and just now starting to miss having a treat. I just made this and am enjoying it now as I type. Yummy, dark chocolaty goodness! I am a big fan of the Krocks : )

  10. Caroline Surprenant says:

I had a chocolate craving, made the chocolate shake. It was so good. Thank you!

  11. Dawn says:

Your chocolate shake recipe helped me get back on track. My treat at the end of the day that motivated me to hang in there knowing I would enjoy it at the end of the day. Thanks. Still going strong. You helped!

    • Great to hear that Dawn! It definitely kept me going when I was first getting myself “back on track” a few months ago. Eventually I didn’t
“need” it as a crutch every night, but I still enjoy it once or twice a week now. It definitely got me through some tough days! Glad it has helped you too.

  12. Michelle says:

Had these tonight after big salad and oh my!! So satisfying and delicious!

  13. Kevin says:

What noise reduction ear muffs did you use making the chocolate shake? I did not see on Amazon store. My blender is too loud.

Thank you for the great, down to earth content, well researched and thoughtful. Presentation is enjoyable, videography, sound pleasing to watch and listen. 🌱🌱

    • I just have a regular pair of Bose headphones… they are several years old so you can’t buy the exact ones anymore. They aren’t actually noise reduction ones though, but they do help quite a bit! Thanks for watching and for the kind words!

    • Marcy says:

My kids use the kind you would use to fire guns at the range. I use the little foam ones they sell at sporting goods stores and at Home Depot or Lowe’s. They work well for me and my hearing is so sensitive that, when I do on the rare occasion go to shoot, I have to use both the foam things they give you plus I bring my firing range big headphones.

  14. Kylie says:

For a receipt with only 5 ingredients – I only had one – vanilla extract – no worries run to the shop – forget the cocoa powder – no worries back to the shop – forgot the vanilla almond milk – uggh reg almond milk will do – an hour later have a shake 🙂 thanks for the receipe and video stuck in my memory and I clearly had to have, if only I could remember a short ingredient list

  15. Marcy says:

I was fearful of this, not being a fan of bananas. However, it is so good. I tried it with 2 Tbsp of cocoa powder and it still hinted of banana. So I added a third. Oh my. So delicious!
