Who we are

Mary Ward once said, “women in time to come will do much”.

As the founder and inspiration for the over 160 schools worldwide run by the Loretto Sisters, Mary Ward’s vision for women is the foundation of our community here at Loretto Abbey.

Mary Ward challenged the status quo – stating that given equal opportunities for education, there would be no difference in what women and men could achieve.

The history of Loretto Abbey lies deep in the history of Toronto, and is a strong testimony of Mary Ward’s conviction. Her legacy is as meaningful today as it was back in the 17th century, and can be seen so vibrantly in the halls of our school, in our classrooms, and through the interactions between our students and the community.

Mary Ward’s passion for women’s education lives on daily in the spirit of Loretto Abbey, as our students continue to nurture, inspire, and encourage others to wholeheartedly embrace life with laughter, courage and a love for one another.

And you belong here.

Why choose the Abbey?

Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School carries on a century-old tradition of excellence in education. Our students are distinguished by their exceptional confidence, imagination, compassion, leadership and high aspirations. Our program is guided by our enduring values of excellence, creativity, diversity, social justice, and spirituality. We encourage our students to excel at academics and to excel at pursuits outside the classroom.

Loretto Abbey has grown into a caring community that nurtures each student’s unique talents and strengths.  We strive to help each of our students to achieve their full potential spiritually, intellectually, socially and emotionally in the context of a faith community of youth who seek truth and act for justice.
