You are eligible and invited to participate in the research project "Mental Health and Well-Being During the Doctorate in Psychology: The Role of Self-Care Behaviors & Attitudes and of Self-Compassion". This research is part of Gregory Fortin-Vidah's doctoral project, directed by Olivier Laverdière of the Université de Sherbrooke's Psychology Department.
The objectives of this research project are: (1) to establish a portrait of the mental health, self-care attitudes and behaviours, and level of self-compassion of Canadian doctoral students in psychology; (2) to assess the evolution of these variables over a 12-month period and understand the factors influencing their changes; and (3) to find a suitable model to explain the relationships between the variables, in order to help identify the most strategic intervention targets.
Your participation in this project consists of answering an online questionnaire taking about 20 minutes by April 30, 2024. If you would like, you can also choose to participate further by completing three additional questionnaires, each taking about 15 minutes, between September 2024 and January 2025, and a final questionnaire in March 2025, taking about 20 minutes. In these questionnaires, you will have the option of saving your answers to continue the questionnaire later.
Besides questions about your socio-demographic and doctoral program characteristics, the other questions are about your mental health, self-care attitudes and behaviours, self-compassion, your main activities and the concerns you may have. Your participation in this research project will contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge on these topics, which could in turn help develop and implement interventions to benefit the mental health of doctoral students in psychology. Your participation may also help you become aware of aspects of your mental health and other study variables that are going well and/or could be improved, and motivate you to consider certain adjustments, if necessary.
A portion of the participants may experience negative affect and possibly distress when answering one or more of the mental health questionnaires. The research team considers the possible risks to be minimal, but should the need arise, participants can consult the resources listed at the bottom of this page. The only disadvantage of participating in the project is the time required to complete the questionnaires. No financial compensation is provided.
Your answers will remain strictly confidential. The data collected will be password-protected and only members of the research team will have access to it. Raw data will be stored on the Université Laval servers associated with its RedCap platform. Exported data and other documents will be stored on the OneDrive storage space of the principal investigator's Université de Sherbrooke Microsoft account. Information on the security measures of the online data collection provider can be found at https://doc.s3.valeria.science/fr/faq/faq.html#comment-la-securite-et-la-protection-des-donnees-sont-elles-assurees. Research data may be published or discussed scientifically. The data collected will be stored for seven years and then destroyed.
Your participation in this research is voluntary. You are therefore free to refuse to take part. You can stop answering a questionnaire at any time by closing your web browser window. Your unsubmitted answers will then be automatically deleted. If you wish, you can also skip one or more questions or sections of a questionnaire. Finally, you can also choose not to respond at all to one or more of the questionnaires for which you will receive an e-mail invitation.
Once you have completed and submitted at least one questionnaire, if you wish your data to be destroyed, you can request it by writing to gregory.fortin-vidah@usherbrooke.ca. If you have any questions or comments about this study, please do not hesitate to contact us at the same address.
The Research Ethics Board of the Université de Sherbrooke (Comité d'éthique de la recherche - Éducation et sciences sociales) has approved this project and will monitor it. If you have any questions about your rights as a participant in this research project, or if you have any comments to make, you can contact this Board at 819-821-8000, ext. 66772 (or toll-free at 1-800-267-8337), or by e-mail at ethique.ess@usherbrooke.ca.
