Walking workshop in Morley

Join the 90-minute walking workshop and contribute to ground breaking research.

As Internet of Things (IoT) devices become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, Lancaster University is hosting a unique walking workshop to discuss the use of IoT devices in public spaces. The 90-minute event, which will take participants on a journey through Morley Town Centre, aims to spark insightful conversations about the implications of such technology, as well as the value of IoT devices.

During the workshop, participants will encounter a variety of IoT sensors strategically placed throughout the town, some of which will be actual devices while others will be fictional. At each device, a discussion will be held to delve into its potential impact on society. This interactive session offers an opportunity for community members to explore the future of IoT technology while contributing to research.

The integration of IoT devices into our daily lives has accelerated, with a wide range of interconnected devices, from smart meters to virtual assistants like Alexa, transforming the way we live. However, these devices raise numerous ethical and privacy concerns that are worthy of exploration. The walking workshop aims to facilitate thought-provoking discussions on these complex issues in order to shed light on the various considerations necessary when implementing IoT devices in public spaces.

Join us for this enlightening walking workshop in Morley Town Centre. We can't wait to see you there!

FREE event on Friday 29 September, 2pm and Saturday 30 September, 11am.

Calling all Picassos for ‘Art in the Park’ celebration to mark completion of first Morley Town Deal project

Budding Picassos from across Morley are being invited to help renowned Leeds mural artist, The Cortisol Kid create a new masterpiece in Hembrigg Park.

The free, half-term week ‘Art in the Park’ event will be held in the park between 11am-3pm on Thursday 1 June, to celebrate the completion of the first project funded by the Morley Town Deal.

Above: A view of Hembrigg Park with its new fencing, benches, bins and tree planting.

The works at Hembrigg Park have seen the installation of a new children’s play area and an outdoor adult gym, new seating and litter bins, new fencing, and the planting of trees and flowers. The project is the first of many improvements to be delivered by the Morley Town Deal and Leeds City Council over the next three years, utilising a £24.3m government Towns Fund grant.

Above: The new children's play area in Hembrigg Park under construction.

The Art in the Park celebration will see young people and families work with Leeds artist, The Cortisol Kid, supported by United Art Project and Ahead Partnership, to create a new ecology and biodiversity-themed mural for the park’s changing rooms.

As well as exploring the new equipment and enjoying the park’s enhanced surroundings, a range of other activities will be available. These will include art workshops, a local art trail, and a chance to share thoughts on public art and street art in the area, focusing on how the community can celebrate Morley through murals and other artistic mediums. All materials needed on the day will be supplied free of charge.

Above: Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate.

Speaking ahead of the celebration event, Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “By using the ideas and inspiration of young Morley people, we can build a long-lasting sense of pride and ownership in the park, while also getting a fantastic piece of art for all to enjoy.

“It would be great to see as many members of the community as possible get involved in its creation.”

Gerald Jennings, Chair of the Morley Town Deal Board, added: “Everyone involved with the Morley Town Deal is delighted to start delivery of the projects for the people of Morley.

“I can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate this milestone than to have a lasting piece of public art that people can enjoy for many years to come.”

Growing Talent Morley supports thousands of young people to see the benefits of Morley Town Deal

Business volunteers and employers in and around Morley have supported 2195 young people so far to understand the Morley Town Deal and its opportunities for a successful career and life.

Since the Growing Talent Morley programme kicked off in January 2023, businesses such as Sterling Capitol, Transpennine Route Upgrade, Sulzer, Leeds Building Society and Landsec have engaged young people aged 10 – 18 years in several exciting and innovative activities focused on their wishes for development in their local area, ecology and the skills needed to be ready for work in Morley.

Ahead Partnership has been appointed to design and deliver the Growing Talent Morley programme with local employers, and so far students from Morley Academy, Woodkirk Academy, Bruntcliffe Academy, Elliot Hudson College, Birchfield Academy, Morley Newlands Academy, St Francis Primary, Gildersome Primary School, and Drighlington Primary School have taken part in the series of careers panels, ‘world of work’ days, workshops and live brief challenges. There are extensive plans to grow the reach of this early careers and skills programme across the Morley area over the coming months.

After taking part in Growing Talent Morley activities, 82% of the students involved said taking part gave them an increased understanding of skills, qualifications, and entry routes into jobs in Morley and all students said they had improved their perception of the career options available in Morley. 97% of the young people involved said it had helped them plan their future goals for life after school.

Gerald Jennings, Chair of Morley Town Deal Board, says: “We are delighted with the progress of the Growing Talent Morley programme which directly engages our youngest stakeholders in Morley around what is happening right on their doorstep. Together with the commitment and passion of our local businesses and employers, we’re helping those young people to envision an improved Morley and really understand what that means for their futures.

Ahead Partnership has been key in bringing this together and delivering activities which speak to and excite local children and young people. The business volunteers love being involved and working collaboratively to improve knowledge and attitudes about Morley. We welcome any individual or organisation who is passionate about Morley to get involved in the programme as it grows throughout the area.”

Public meeting for updated Morley conservation area appraisal management plan

A public meeting is to be held at Morley Town Hall this Thursday night to discuss a proposed new management plan guiding development and conservation in the area.

The meeting, open to all from 6pm on Thursday 16 March, forms part of a public consultation which is now running on the creation of a unified Morley Conservation Area and a draft Appraisal and Management Plan. This plan would replace the existing current conservation areas in the place covering the town centre and Dartmouth Park with a larger, single area which would aim to protect, preserve, and enhance Morley’s important heritage.

The new plan would recognise and protect investments delivered through the Morley Town Deal’s Heritage Investment Programme and ensure improvements to buildings within the conservation area are maintained. Buildings within a conservation area are protected from unauthorised demolition, and any new development must meet higher standards of design. Permission would also be needed from Leeds City Council for certain development.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “I’m pleased that we can now review and potentially increase the protection offered to Morley’s heritage.

“Morley’s two current conservation areas were set up in the 1970s when the emphasis switched from demolishing historic buildings to conserving them. Some areas of Morley with buildings of historical significance were left unprotected by the current conservation areas.

“These updated Management Plan new boundary proposals will allow us to protect more buildings of cultural and historical significance in Morley than ever before. I encourage everyone to have their say and get involved with this consultation.”

Gerald Jennings, Morley Town Deal board chair, said: “Throughout the Town Deal consultations, the overwhelming consensus has been that the historic assets of Morley are part of what makes the town unique and that the people would like these assets enhanced and protected.

“Therefore, I welcome the plans for new boundaries to the conservation area that will preserve the heritage of Morley for many generations to come.”

The consultation runs until Sunday 26 March and can be seen online at: https://morleytowndeal.commonplace.is/ Paper copies are also available at Morley Library for viewing.

Morley Town Deal Board meetings – now opening to the public

Get involved in Growing Talent Morley!

The Morley Town Deal is a £24.3m programme of funding that will deliver an ambitious and transformative vision for the town of Morley.

The programme will deliver five distinct projects tackling regeneration, connectivity, employment and skills, business growth and improving green spaces and the public realm.

Growing Talent Morley is a programme of engagement with schools and children which will embed the benefits of the Morley Town Deal in the town, supporting young people to engage with the themes, activities and outcomes of the Town Investment Plan and enhancing awareness and interest in digital skills and careers linked to job opportunities in and around Morley.

    Why get involved?

Your involvement will help young people in a really practical way and help them to envision a more positive future. The programme allows businesses to play their part in creating a more equal and inclusive society, whilst reaching out to potential talent and the unique skills and perspectives that young people can bring to the sector.

All the activities in the programme are organised by Ahead Partnership with support and resources that help volunteers get involved, whether you are office or home based.

What sort of activities takes place through the programme?

The activities we design and deliver together vary according the ages of the young people involved, though we can work with any employer on an idea that they may have to engage young people in understanding their sector.

At primary school level, this may include enterprise challenges and World of Work Days focusing on the local area and the new developments they will see in the future. At Key Stage 3 (11-13 years) this may include careers panels, sector insight days and inspirational speeches. At Key Stage 4 (14-15 years) the programme is more focused on specific job roles, skills and routes of entry through activities such as workplace visits, curriculum resources, speed networking, live briefs and podcasts. By Key Stage 5 (16-19 years) students interested in specific sectors are invited to attend work experience and insight days.

Growing Talent Morley works with young people over a number of years to improve their knowledge of a specific sector and harness and grow their passion through more targeted and specific experiences with the employers involved in the programme.

    How can I get involved?

Please follow this link and complete the form to express your interest. We will get in touch to send you more information and discuss how your organisation would like to get involved.

Major delivery milestone as the first spades hit the ground in Hembrigg and Dartmouth parks

Work has started on the delivery of the first of six Morley Town Deal improvement projects. The projects to redevelop Hembrigg Park and Dartmouth Park mark the first of many spade-in-the-ground milestones in delivering the Morley Town Deal plans.

Funded through a £24.3m grant from the government’s Towns Fund, the works are a culmination of over two years of design, planning, and public consultations led by Leeds City Council and the Morley Town Deal board and follow a complete analysis of each park in Morley by delivery partner, Groundwork Yorkshire.

The improvements to Hembrigg Park will focus on play, health, and recreational facilities, while work in Dartmouth Park will add additional seating and new planting. Work to Improve Dartmouth Park’s Botanical Gardens is planned in a later phase of development, further to additional public consultation. Each park will also see general improvements in the visitor experience.

The work in both parks is being delivered by Leeds City Council parks and countryside service and Groundwork Yorkshire and is expected to be completed by Spring 2023. The £700,000 investment into Hembrigg and Dartmouth parks are just two of eight Morley parks scheduled for redevelopment as a part of the Morley Town Deal’s wider Greener and Connected programme over the next three to four years.

Together with the redevelopment of local parks and playgrounds, the Greener and Connected programme will also deliver new and improved public spaces and improvement to public rights of way. The programme will also see significant upgrades to travel choices, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, with enhanced routes around town, improved access to existing highways, and better crossings and junctions to increase safety.

Picture (left to right): Peter Murphy, operations director, Groundwork (Yorkshire) Ltd, Cllr. Wyn Kidger, Cllr. Helen Hayden, Morely Town Deal Chair, Gerlad Jennings, Cllr. Jane Senior, Cllr. Robert Finnigan.

Commenting, Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “I’m pleased that we are starting to deliver the Morley Town Deal by redeveloping Hembrigg and Dartmouth Parks. These two parks have provided joy to generations of people and these works will make sure that future generations can enjoy them for years to come as well.

“Just like all work the council does, we have listened to what local people have told us is important to them. The overwhelming consensus from the people of Morley was that people wanted clean and pleasant areas to relax and exercise, as well as space for children to play and enjoy safely. These parks will embody these ideas and I cannot wait for people to start enjoying them in summer next year".

Gerald Jennings, chair of the Morley Town Deal board, said: “I’m thrilled to start delivering the tangible benefits of the Town Deal to the people of Morley so soon after the final confirmation of the funding this past September.

“While the work in Hembrigg and Dartmouth parks marks a major delivery milestone, we still have a great deal of work to do on delivering all the other aspects of the Town Deal agenda. There are many opportunities for people in Morley to get involved, whether through attending our public consultations in early and mid-2023, joining our inclusive design panel or providing ideas and feedback on our plans via our commonplace website. I would encourage as many people to get involved as possible.”

  • Together with the Greener and Connected plans, the other priorities that form the Morley Town Deal include:
  • Plans for a new technology-focused skills campus run by Leeds City College;
  • The development of an Innovations Hub at White Rose Business Park;
  •  Enhancements to Morley Town Hall to bring more events and activities to the town, introducing a cafe bar, better accessibility, and improving the space around the building;
  • A new heritage investment grants scheme will also be offered to businesses to invest in shop fronts and to restore historic buildings in Morley, together with supporting work to bring vacant heritage properties back into use;
  • and improved pedestrian and cycle routes on Albert Road and Station Road to create a clear, safer gateway between the station and the town centre for residents and visitors.

Morley public drop-in event a great success

An in-person public drop-in event, where the people of Morley were invited to meet Morley Town Deal board members, council officers, and partners, has been hailed as a great success by the chairman of the board, Gerald Jennings.

The well-attended event, held at Morley Town Hall on Saturday 19 November, invited attendees to learn more about each aspect of the various projects through visual displays and a video and have conversations with board members, council officers, and partners in attendance. There were also opportunities to leave feedback.

Speaking after the event, Gerald Jennings, Morley Town Deal board chairman said:

“It was great to see so many people in attendance. The level of engagement with the plans for each project was outstanding.

“This type of event is invaluable to us as a board, as we can really get to know what people want from the Town Deal and get face-to-face feedback on the plans. I had a lot of interesting conversations which will help to influence the projects moving forward.

“We have several project consultations coming up in the new year and events like this help to shape our plans prior to formally consulting on them. The more feedback we can get, the more the plans represent the needs of the Morley people.

“The drop-in event was a great success and I really look forward to the more formal consultations in the new year.”

Approved! – Morley gets full £24.3m Town Deal funding

The funding award comes after Leeds City Council and the Morley Town Deal Board worked on a Town Investment Plan and designed a range of schemes to deliver on key priorities identified through public consultation.

    The plans include:

    • New and improved public spaces, with planting transforming areas around the town centre. There will be key improvements at Town Square and Queen Street and significant development of local parks, playgrounds, and public rights of way.

    • Significant upgrades to travel choices, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, with better access to the train station. Enhanced routes around town will improve access to existing highways, and better crossings and junctions will increase safety. Connections between the Town Centre, Morley Train Station, White Rose, and White Rose Station will also be developed.

    • Plans for a White Rose Innovation Hub, which complements a new technology-focused skills campus run by Leeds City College. Both developments will provide exceptional skills training and job opportunities for residents and businesses.

    • Securing Morley’s heritage buildings, with enhancements to Morley Town Hall to bring more events and activities to the town, introducing a cafe bar, better accessibility, and improving the space around the building.

    • A new heritage grants scheme will also be offered to businesses to invest in shop fronts and to restore historic buildings along Queen Street, together with supporting work to bring vacant heritage properties back into use.

With full funding now confirmed, the outline plans will move to the design stage, with initial project delivery expected to start in 2023, following further public consultation. Delivery work is projected to last until 2026.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said:

“I’m pleased that we have been able to deliver this funding approval for the people of Morley, and I want to congratulate everyone on the hard work that has already gone into the various projects.

“The Town Investment Plan is a real opportunity to build a better future for Morley. Not only will these plans bring essential health, environmental, and transport improvements and secure the town’s heritage, they will deliver excellent education and job opportunities for the future.

“However, the work to bring the Town Investment Plan to reality is far from over. I encourage everyone in Morley to get involved in future consultation to make the Town Deal a plan that rightly represents the views and needs of local people.”

Gerald Jennings, chairman of the Morley Town Deal Board, said:

“A great deal of hard work over the past 18 months by the Town Deal Board, Leeds City Council and most importantly, the people of Morley has gone into securing this funding.

“The consultations we ran highlighted the people’s appetite for a better connected, more dynamic Morley that is a healthy and happy place to live and work while simultaneously recognising and protecting its incredible heritage. I believe that the initial plans encompass all these ambitions and more. I look forward to working with the people of Morley on the design and delivery stages.”

Board member, Andrea Jenkyns MP, said:

“The government’s £24.3 million, once-in-a-generation investment into Morley, looks to bolster our local offering and ensure that our economy, our high street, and our town goes from strength to strength. Decisions must prioritise the wants and wishes of the people of Morley, must offer accountability and transparency, and –above all – offer value for money for every pound of taxpayers' money spent.

The jewel in the crown of proposed works is the delivery of our new skills and learning college, which will upskill and retrain learners from across our town and the wider area, giving more local learners access to good and outstanding quality education.”

A social, safe place – Lewisham Park

A new toddlers’ play area is opening at Lewisham Park, in readiness for the half-term school holidays. Experienced landscape architect Jeremy Linden, of Groundwork Yorkshire , sets the scene in this short blog.

Take a walk down to Lewisham Park in the coming weeks and you will find young children enjoying their new play area.

Shouts of joy as they explore the mounds and tunnels found by a dual slide, as well as the thrill of playing on new swings, a rope net and wobbly bridge.

“The toddler’s play area at Lewisham Park has been designed to provide a sociable space that will encourage parents to meet and for younger children to play in a safe environment,” Jeremy told us.

“All of the equipment promotes joint play, develops balance and help the toddlers to explore a range of environments in a safe and exciting way. These activities help build confidence and above all to use up energy!”

Installing the play area has come with challenges but the Groundwork team are grateful for local support during the work.

“Many of the residents have stopped by to say how much they are looking forward to completion of the play area so that their younger children can enjoy a space that is designed for them,” the landscape architect added.

“Local councillors have taken a keen interest in the project, from design through to implementation, and have provided a positive link to the local community as it has taken shape.

“We would like to thank everyone. In delivering the project we encountered a number of unexpected challenges and they were both understanding and helpful in terms of overcoming these.”

This feeling of gratitude is shared by the community – Morley people know the value of improved greenspaces and appreciate Groundwork’s care, which has included assisting future maintenance with more rubber safety surfacing being laid than planned originally.

Councillor Jane Senior, of Morley Town Council and a Leeds City Councillor for Morley South, said: “We are delighted that investment has been given to Lewisham Park.

“It’s long overdue for this area and will provide the local community a safe and enjoyable place to spend their time.”

Know a family that would enjoy Lewisham Park? Please tell them about the new play area. It complements the multi-use games area, cricket wicket and wider recreation grounds,

You can find more details on what Morley Town Deal is planning for greenspaces online at bit.ly/bettermorley and with further upcoming blogs on this site.

    What Morley people want

The transformation of Morley, backed by £24.3 million investment, is led by local people.

But what exactly do people want from Morley Town Deal ?

This blog gives a short, simple outline of what is important to the people of Morley and how they feel about proposed improvements.

Better parks and open spaces came out as the top answer to the initial question: How should money be spent in Morley? This was mirrored by strong support for greener streets, improving and introducing woodland, planting trees and tackling climate change.

Alongside this is strong support for preserving Morley’s heritage, bringing vacant buildings back into use and improving local shops as well as the town centre street scene.

Transport – whether better train travel or creating cycleways – and improving opportunities for local people were among the other popular answers.

Following this, Morley Town Deal introduced a series of proposed schemes – listed online at bit.ly/bettermorley – and the question: What projects would you most like to see happen?

The results tally with the earlier question. Greenspace improvements is the most popular project among Morley people, followed by improvements to heritage buildings and shop fronts, Morley Rail Station, New Pavilion and Morley Town Hall, among others.

Beyond this, 86 per cent of people who responded are positive about Morley Town Deal’s proposals. This contrasts with four per cent being negative and the rest describing themselves as neutral about the projects.

For those of you wanting more details on public feedback to Morley Town Deal, you can read this comprehensive 62-page report online .

Public engagement for Morley Town Deal took place late-2020 and heard from over 1,600 respondents. Of those nearly three-quarters live in the town with the remainder made up of those with family and friends in Morley, locally employed people, regular shoppers and other visitors.

Consultation involved interviews with residents and other stakeholders, events, online surveys and more. This work was overseen by national charity Locality and digital engagement consultants Commonplace.

More public views will be sought in the coming months as individual project proposals are further developed.

New look Morley Bottoms among projects kickstarting longer-term regeneration plans for the town

During last year's large-scale public consultation on what the future of the town should look like, Morley Bottoms was identified as a priority for changes, with local residents highlighting how a lack of crossing and narrow pavements made the area difficult to navigate.

The newly created pedestrianised zone features wider footpaths, creating space for local businesses to use as lockdown restrictions continue to ease, as well as a one-way bus gate.

Helping to improve local air quality in a previously congested area of Morley, this one-way system allows buses to travel through the area while closing the road to traffic at the bottom of Queen Street.

In the coming weeks, further work will be carried out to make the area safer for pedestrians, with crossings being added on Station Hill and Chapel Road.

This work was made possible by £750,000 of government funding secured last year by Leeds City Council and the Morley Town Deal Board to kickstart longer-term growth plans for the town.

In addition to the work on Morley Bottoms, this investment has seen improvements made to Scatcherd Park and new public art installed across the town, including striking temporary panels on the New Pavilion building, designed by Leeds-based artist Ekaterina Sheath.

These projects will continue in the coming weeks, with a new play area to be installed in Lewisham Park and improvements planned along the pedestrianised area of Queen Street.

A further £24.3 million of government investment was recently secured for a major regeneration plan for Morley.

Informed by residents and developed by the Morley Town Deal Board with support from the council, the funding will deliver on key local priorities including jobs, skills, greenspaces, sustainable travel and bringing cherished buildings back into use.

The Morley Town Investment Plan will invest in:

  • New and upgraded greenspace.
  • Improving connections to the train station.
  • Transforming the New Pavilion.
  • Making it easier to walk and cycle.
  • Morley Town Hall refurbishment.
  • Improving heritage buildings.
  • The White Rose Innovation Hub.
  • Full details of the funding can be found on the Morley Town Investment Plan webpage.

Work is currently underway on developing these approved projects in further detail, with opportunities for local residents and businesses to feedback planned for this summer to ensure the proposals meet the needs of the community.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council's executive member for infrastructure and climate, said:

"After what has been a challenging year for many local residents and businesses in Morley, I am delighted to see these accelerated funding projects being delivered across the town. From vibrant public art injecting life into the streets to making Morley Bottoms a safer place to visit, these projects represent an exciting first step towards a thriving future for the area.

"With work ongoing on developing the major transformational plans for Morley further, I encourage people who live, work and visit the area to keep an eye out for opportunities to share their thoughts throughout the summer."

Gerald Jennings, Chair of the Morley Town Deal Board, said:

"At the heart of the role of the Morley Town Deal Board is ensuring this programme of work builds on the town's proud history in a way which delivers for everyone in Morley. Informed by their suggestions, the projects currently delivered will make Morley a greener, safer and more vibrant place to live, work and visit.

"It is great to see our vision starting to be realised as you walk around such an historic town with so much to offer, and I can't wait to see how it will grow and develop in the years to come."

Councillor Robert Finnigan, Morley Town Council, said:

"Last year, our communities came together to tell us how they want to see Morley transformed in the years to come. We were blown away by their ideas and the passion they showed for building on the rich history of the place they call home.

"Through these accelerated funding projects, we have started to build the foundations for the exciting projects to come. Investing in our parks, streets and cultural offering, I hope residents will pay the town centre a visit to check out all the improvements for themselves."
