SXSW EDU 2024
Stop Yelling About Their Phones -- It's Really About Power
Description:
Struggles around tech in the classroom are emblematic of systemic, long standing issues—power, access, and equity. With the addictive nature of social media and rapidly evolving AI, educators attempt to police device use—an unrealistic and ethically tricky practice that disempowers students. Map Academy, an alternative high school for students failed by other systems, understands devices are powerful, necessary tools for modern life. Hear from students and staff about an empowering approach to tech that meets the moment, respects learners’ needs, and prepares them for life beyond graduation.
