The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle made a commitment to create a public memorial to acknowledge victims and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.

Mara Consulting has been engaged to consult with the community to understand if a memorial is an appropriate way to acknowledge victims and survivors, both living and deceased, of Catholic institutional child sexual abuse.

There are two key components; firstly to understand if a public memorial is supported. If it is supported, the second part is to collect ideas about elements that could be included in a memorial.

The project aims to engage with victims and survivors, their families and support networks, and the families of those that may have died and their support networks. This is to make sure the voices of people with lived experience are heard in the decisions about a public memorial.

The project also wants to hear from other interested parties, including members of the faith communities in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and those working for the Diocese.

No one will be asked to share personal experiences. Participation is optional, is anonymous and you can opt out at any point.

Counselling support

Do you support

a memorial?

What is the purpose of the consultation project?

This project is to understand if there is public support for a permanent memorial to acknowledge victims and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. If there is general support, then we want to find out what elements and themes people would like to see included in a design for a memorial. For example gardens, water, sculptures, statues, parks, seats, etc.

Who will be included in the conversation?

The project aims to engage with victims and survivors, their families and support networks, and the families of those that may have died and their support networks. This is to make sure the voices of people with lived experience are heard in the decisions about a public memorial.

The project also wants to hear from other interested parties, including members of the faith communities in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and those working for the Diocese.

The engagement process has been designed to give people the ability to get involved in a way that is comfortable, and can be done privately.
