Online Conversation: Nelson Mandela Day
Date: July 17, 2020 (Friday)
Time: 3.00pm-4.30pm (Malaysian time)
Platform: Virtual Platform
Co-Organisers: Society for the Promotion of Human Rights (PROHAM), Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance and KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific (KASI) supported by the United Nations in Malaysia

The United Nations (UN) in recognition of Nelson Mandela as a towering global advocate for justice and equality resolved to dedicate a day in his memory as the Nelson Mandela International Day on July 18 every year in paying tribute to the late South African President’s celebrated qualities and service to humanity. The UN also declared a Nelson Mandela Decade of Peace (2019-2028) in 2018 with a political declaration committed to redoubling efforts in building a just, peaceful, prosperous, inclusive and fair world for all of humanity. Nelson Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy, but it is also a global call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. These values include democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect. In a challenging time like this, this online conversation has two aims:
1. To reflect on Mandela’s struggle for democracy and peace in the context of the current struggle for sustainable development.
2. To call for a greater emphasis on our role as global citizens.
