About this event

NOTE: EACH VOLUNTEER MUST BE REGISTERED BEFORE ARRIVING AT THE FARM. -- Minors (ages 12-17) must be registered by a parent or legal guardian.

Please wear a face mask when you arrive. You will not have to wear the mask the entire time but will need to when processing produce or when near other people. If anyone in your household is ill please cancel your volunteer shift.

New Leaf Agriculture offers refugees from traditional farming cultures the chance to reconnect and grow in a trade that they are already passionate about. Volunteers help the refugee farm crew in building out our twenty-acre regenerative farm. You might do a variety of tasks such as creating farm pathways, establishing cover crops, forming new beds, harvesting, and many other things while working alongside our New Leaf crew.

Each workday has different activities, depending on what needs to be accomplished at the farm that day. Some heavy lifting may be required as well as the use of gardening tools. New Leaf employees are committed to your safety and will take every reasonable precaution to keep you safe.

When you arrive there is a driveway with a small white New Leaf Farm sign in front of it. Drive down the gravel road and park in front of the open-sided barn by the trailer/walk-in cooler. The farm is on the back end of the property so you cannot see it from the parking area. If you continue walking down the path you should see a small pond on your left and a shed on your right. Keep walking past the shed, towards the right of the greenhouse and you should see the farm behind a small stand of trees. If you cannot find these landmarks, call Matt Simon or Wandaka Musongera and he will come and meet you near the parking area.

If you get lost that morning:

  • (Wednesdays) Call Matt at 512-589-4029
  • (Saturdays) Call Wandaka at 512-378-3408

While volunteering at the farm wear closed-toes shoes, a hat, long pants, and bring sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Water bottles should only be filled from the processing trailer or the wash shed. All other locations are nonpotable water. The apprentices typically take a break and share snacks, so feel free to bring a snack as well.

While this volunteer activity is rain or shine, we do cancel in times of severe weather. We will reach out the morning of to let you know if we have to cancel.

You may contact us at newleafvolunteers@mrcaustin.org with any questions or concerns.
