New NIH Fast-Track Program for COVID-19 Test Development and Distribution – Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx)The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is urgently soliciting proposals and can provide up to $500M across multiple projects to rapidly produce innovative SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests that will assist the public’s safe return to normal activities. RADx will provide resources to support all phases of the product development pipeline from conceptualization and design to reduction-to-practice, performance evaluation, clinical validation, and scale-up of manufacturing. There will be a rolling submission and selection process beginning Apr 29 until further notice.
New Webinar Series for the NIGMS Training CommunityWebinar series is for students, postdocs, and faculty. Each hour-long webinar will include a 10- to 15-minute presentation by the speaker followed by a moderated question and answer session. NIGMS hopes is that these webinars will enhance trainees’ ongoing learning experiences. The webinar series kicks off THIS Mon, May 4, and a tentative list of dates and speakers is in the Webinars section below. As plans are finalized, additional details will be posted on their website.

A special late-breaking session was provided during this past week’s 157th National Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting providing deeper insights into the latest developments in the global response to COVID-19. During the session, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIAID, offered an update on the pandemic in the US, where the number of reported cases is nearing 1 million. “This is such a large country, and the dynamics of the outbreak differ from state to state, from region to region, and even from city to city,” he said.

September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2021
Developmental Research Project Program (DRP)DRP Awards support independent research and career development for selected faculty to establish their independent research programs and, in the process, provide research training to students and/or postdocs in the Biomedical Sciences. Up to eight awards of $50,000 each for predominantly undergraduate institution (PUI) faculty; up to five awards of $50,000 each will be made to faculty at comprehensive research universities (CRUs). 

Bioinformatics Pilot Project Program (BIPP)Proposals must focus on Biomedical Science and fit within the broad scientific focus areas of SC INBRE. In addition, proposed BIPP projects must provide opportunities for students (undergrad or grad) to gain research experience. Up to 5 awards of $10,000 each will be awarded.

Student-Initiated Research Projects Program (SIRP)Program is designed to enrich the academic experience of students and to better prepare the future generation of researchers, investigators, and entrepreneurs throughout the SC INBRE network. SIRP applications must apply bioinformatics tools to biomedical research questions and fit within the broad scientific focus areas of SC INBRE. Up to five awards of $3,000 each will be awarded.
