Breastfeeding is crucial for lifelong health, providing antibodies, protection against allergies, aiding digestion, and enhancing bonding. Expert support is scarce due to limited statutory resources. We bridge the gap, empowering mothers and parents - enhancing infant well-being.

    Situation

We address persistently low breastfeeding rates in Oxfordshire. Despite 81% initiating breastfeeding, only 1% exclusively breastfeed at 6 months, falling far below the World Health Organisation's recommendations and impacting health outcomes and maternal well-being. Our goal is to bridge the intention-action gap, providing comprehensive support from experienced lactation consultants and breastfeeding counsellors to improve rates and promote well-being of mothers and infants.

    Solution

OBS assists around 1,000 Oxfordshire families annually in breastfeeding. Our breastfeeding specialists offer group sessions, one-to-one consultations, a Facebook group, and other forms of remote support. We provide tailored support to teenage mothers in collaboration with the Family Nurse Partnership. Additionally, we offer professional development opportunities to student midwives and health visitors. Our low-cost breast pump loan scheme is also available to families in need.
