Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body & The Latest in Dementia Research

Part 1: Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body

For centuries, we've known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

Part 2: The Latest in Dementia Research

Alzheimer’s disease is a global health concern with more than 6 million people affected in the US alone. Tremendous gains have been made in the understanding of the science and basic biology underlying Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. These advances are leading to great strides in strategies for prevention, detection, diagnostics, and therapeutic interventions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a global leader in research, mobilizing the field to advance the vision of a world without dementia.

Intended audience: This presentation is appropriate for a general audience including caregivers, individuals living with dementia, and everyone interested in tips on healthy aging and updates about dementia-related research.

Presenters:

Jennifer Levy Peck, Volunteer Community Educator, Alzheimer's Association Oregon and SW Washington Chapter

Jennifer Y. Levy-Peck, PhD is a clinical psychologist and the owner of Levy-Peck Consulting, LLC. She provides training and technical writing related to victim advocacy and related topics, along with sexual assault program accreditation. Dr. Levy-Peck has worked with trauma survivors and in program development for more than 30 years. Her most recent book, Magic at Midlife: Your Relationship Roadmap for Romance After 40, is aimed at boomers and seniors who want to find and maintain a lasting, loving relationship. She has also written a book for parents of children who have been sexually abused, writes and edits professional materials, and has been a presenter at national, regional, and local conferences. Her personal connection to Alzheimer’s is her late husband Charles’ eight-year journey with the disease, which prompted her to write a blog called AlzPartner and to begin work on a book of the same name.

Kaitlyn Bertholet, Regional Coordinator & Research Champion, Alzheimer's Association Oregon and SW Washington Chapter

Kaitlyn Bertholet is the Central Oregon Regional Coordinator with the Alzheimer's Association Oregon and Southwest Washington Chapter. After graduating from the School of Social Work at Portland State University, Kaitlyn worked as a Life Enrichment Coordinator at a memory care community where she witnessed the impact of dementia on the families she served. Her personal and professional experiences have fueled her passion of advocating for those living with dementia and their care partners, connecting families with much needed support, and reducing stigma of dementia through education.

Why do we ask for a fee?

OGA is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Events and donations are our main sources of income to fund our educational and networking programs.

Reduced or complementary event registration is one of the great benefits for OGA members! If you like our educational program - we strive to offer at least one event per month - becoming a member will pay off quickly! To learn more about OGA membership, please visit our Membership page.

However, we understand that many of us are struggling to make ends meet these days. No one will be turned away! If you cannot afford $5 at this moment, please contact us at [email protected] - thanks to the generous donations of OGA members and friends throughout the year, we can cover a small number of registrations for each event.

Please note that we offer CEUs only for our annual conference in October, not for our regular events. However, we are happy to issue a Certificate of Attendance upon request for those who attend this webinar for its entire length. To request one, please send us an email after the event.
