COMtalk: Off the Beaten Path, Less Traditional COM Careers

Many of us start college with one trajectory – pursue that degree and move on to work for a big agency. It’s what most communication professionals prepare for. When you're feeling burnt out, facing a tough job market, or looking to find your purpose, you might ask yourself: “Where can my communications degree take me?”

Learn from these outstanding panelists about how you can utilize your transferable communications skills in unique careers.

Panelists:

Alison Inouye (COM and Questrom’11), Digital Producer at Netflix 

Alison Inouye has spent the last eleven years in creative marketing production for entertainment brands in film, television, streaming and consumer products. Currently, she produces the FYC campaigns for Netflix, aiming to help the distributor reach industry awards voters through targeted and compelling creative on digital platforms. Prior to Netflix, a majority of her career was in service to the print and digital advertising campaigns for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm & 20th Century, but she has also collaborated with studios such as Sony, Universal and WB. Through various roles within the studios and at media and creative agencies, Alison has executed the concept, development and execution of marketing campaigns from multiple perspectives. From developing websites and mobile games to creating key art and billboards, she is always motivated by her passion in combining creativity and technology. 

TJ Keitt (COM’03’05), Vice President, Market Research at SAP

TJ heads up the user experience market research function within SAP's design organization. Prior to holding that role, TJ led a customer experience strategy team for SAP. Before joining SAP, TJ spent over 15 years in professional services, first working in new product development consulting before moving on to lead research, advisory, and consulting efforts in a range of software market and B2B customer experience practice areas.

  

Colin Rose, Ed.D. (CGS’01, COM’03, Wheelock’04), Founder & CEO, Perennial

Dr. Colin Rose is the Founder and CEO of Perennial Education Consulting where he supports leaders to operationalize systemic improvement for excellence and equity. He currently supports over 25 school districts across the Commonwealth as well as leaders at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Prior to his consulting work, Dr. Rose was an Assistant Superintendent at the Boston Public Schools wherein he was able to build a legacy of effective policies, systemic initiatives and professional development, meaningful programming and innovative school models. His leadership and equity innovations have been featured in multiple journals and media outlets.

Dr. Rose began his career as a teacher, fostering some of the highest student growth scores in Massachusetts. He earned his doctorate in Leadership in Urban Schools at the University of Massachusetts Boston.


Kayla Warren (COM’18), User Experience Designer at Peraton 

Kayla is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Georgia. She received her Master’s degree in Health Communication from Boston University in 2018. While enrolled at BU, Kayla completed a health communication internship with the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, that launched her career in government health. After graduating, she became a communications associate working on the websites womenshealth.gov and girlshealth.gov for the Office on Women’s Health. Kayla worked closely with designers and content strategists on the user experience of both websites and decided to pursue a career as a UX designer. After enrolling in a UX boot camp, she leveraged her background in communications and government to land her first role as a UX designer working on the CDC.gov website.

Heather Fink, Director of Career Services at Boston University College of Communication

Heather has ten years of experience as a manager, employer relations professional, advisor and teacher at seven private and public university career centers.  In my role as the Director of Career Services, I manage employer and alumni relations as well as decide on initiatives that our office will put forth. It is my goal to infuse equity and inclusion into all our career programming, events, and services.
