 p119  XII. Construction of a bridge

A bridge is being thrown over what is probably an affluent of the Danube, and lies across the great military road which the emperor is constructing. Five soldiers are occupied, lifting, fitting, and nailing together timbers for this bridge. It is supported on latticed girders strengthened by piles driven into the bed of the river. Several men, with mallet and chisel, are shaping different portions of the bridge. One drives a rough pile into the bed of the river, two more bear a heavy beam to complete the top of one of the girders. The timber has been carefully squared. One of the uprights of the girders is completed with a moulded abacus at the point of junction with the beam that rests on it.
