Outside the praetorian gate of his camp stands the emperor, behind him are the two guards. One of his officers is beside him, the other presents to him a Dacian chief or prince. He wears the usual dress and a cap on his head; he is kneeling, throws his shield on the ground at the feet of Trajan and implores mercy. The emperor with his left hand on his sword hilt makes the Dacian a sign to rise with his right. Two cornicines, an eagle, two signiferi of manipuli, and a column of soldiers complete the ceremonial of this reception.
