After the sacrifices are over the emperor, according to his custom, makes a speech to the legionaries, explaining the nature of the operations to be undertaken, and encouraging them against the difficulties in store in forcing their way through a warlike population. He is attended by two generals, one on each side, and by a lictor with the fasces. Two men, wearing the chain mail notched at the bottom and the military pallium, hold two horses, trapped and furnished with saddlecloths, and with oval shields hung on the left sides of the saddle coverings. These are the horses of the officers in attendance on the emperor.
