I know I am stepping into big shoes. Nigel Short has done an outstanding job before me and the work of Nigel and the Board has gone a long way to ensuring that we will be able to emerge from this period and can look forward to an exciting future ahead.

We have all gone through a huge amount over the last few months and my thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected by Covid-19.

Bringing on board All Blacks great Sean Fitzpatrick as an non-executive director is another indication of the global pull of the Scarlets brand. There is close to 150 years of history here and when you combine that with a continuous conveyor belt of playing and coaching talent, outstanding facilities and the incredible community attachment I have spoken of, we have a lot going for ourselves.

What has been clear is that this club is intertwined with its community and its region as strongly as it has ever been. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from season ticket holders who have been kind enough to gift their refunds back to the club. In such challenging financial times to have the level of support that we have had has been incredible. There is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes to make sure we pull through and we will pull through this.

I have already met with the Scarlets supporters Trust Crys 16 on ways we can work together and am looking forward to meeting more of you in the coming weeks and months. Hopefully, it won’t be long before we are all back at the Parc cheering on the Scarlets. Until then, stay safe and healthy and enjoy the game. Simon

PAG E / T U D A L E N 5

For someone who grew up in Llanelli and is a lifelong Scarlets supporter, I am truly humbled to be in this position as the club’s executive chairman. It is a huge privilege and I also understand the responsibility that comes with the role.

PA R C Y S C A R L E T S K O / C G 1 5 : 0 0

This is not how I would have wanted to welcome the Scarlets fans in my first programme message as chairman, but these are extraordinary times and being back playing at the Parc is an exciting step forward to rugby returning to some form of normality.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

ISSUE / RHIFYN 11

COACH WELCOME We are back at the Parc for a game of rugby, but obviously it is not the same without you, our loyal fans here with us. These have been tough, challenging times for everyone, we have lost people who are very close to us and it has been a period that has taught us all what is important in life. This will be a poignant day to mark those who are no longer with us, family and friends as well as three members of the Scarlets family, Matthew J Watkins, Andrew ‘Tommo’ Thomas and Peter Rees, who have sadly passed away in recent months. Which is why as a team it is important we go out there today and show our respect by playing with a smile on our face and cheer in our heart. We are back doing what we love and we are hugely grateful for that.

I would also like to thank the work of our medical teams and staff at Parc y Scarlets who have put in tireless hours to make sure the players and coaches are able to go about their daily work in a safe environment. We have been through a lot as a world and as a country since rugby was last played out on the Parc - this game has been a long time coming. There has been a real buzz around training, the new arrivals have fitted in superbly, boys who have been injured have come back and are like new signings themselves and everyone is excited about pulling the jersey on again. We are as ready as we can ever be. There is only so much time we can spend

banging into each other in training, we need to find someone with a different colored shirt to really test ourselves and I know we will be tested this afternoon. The Blues are worthy adversaries and I welcome John Mulvihill, his staff and players to Parc y Scarlets. We had a great tussle with them in Cardiff way back in January and I expect no different today. Hopefully, we will get a dry day and be able to give the ball some air, that is the type of game we want to play and we want to continue evolving how we were playing before lockdown. I hope you all enjoy the match wherever you are. Please shout loud and proud because we know even though you can’t be here in person, you are going to be here in spirit. Mwynhewch y gêm Glenn

PAG E / T U D A L E N 7

It has been heartwarming to see how the Scarlets community has pulled together during this pandemic. We have seen our players join grassroots clubs and our Community Foundation in delivering care packs to the vulnerable and it has been great to see how the Scarlets family have continued to engage with the club through social media. We are also hugely appreciative of the

response from our season ticket holders in donating their refunds back to the club. It does make a huge difference and just highlights how much we are all in this together.

IN A PARALLEL WORLD WITHOUT COVID, WYN JONES WOULD NOW BE A NEWLYMARRIED MR JONES. The Wales prop and his partner Jeian were due to tie the knot last Saturday, but the inevitability of the global pandemic has meant that celebrations have had to be put on hold for 12 months. “Hopefully all will go to plan next year,” smiled the popular loosehead this week as he was reminded of what might have been. “I think Jeian’s got everything ready for next year. In a way she’s had to organise it twice, it’s not ideal, but it’s what we’ve had to do. She would have been happier if it would have happened last week, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”

PAG E / T U D A L E N 8

Instead, Wyn and his Scarlets teammates have been preparing for the long-awaited return to rugby at Parc y Scarlets this afternoon.

It may be the same season, but the Scarlets’ last home match against Southern Kings on February 23rd seems like a lifetime away; coaches and players have said their farewells and exciting new signings have arrived. The squad have had to adapt to training in lockdown before returning to a very different environment at Parc y Scarlets with their training barn now a 250-bed field hospital. “It has been a tough time for everyone,” admits Wyn. “As a rugby player probably the last last thing you thought about was rugby, you were made to realise there were bigger things going on and spending more time with the family was something I enjoyed. It’s important to look after your loved ones.”

“I do think the time away from the game has done a lot of us good, especially after World Cup year. I certainly felt better and refreshed coming back in,” he adds. “Niggles which you would normally roll from week to week are healed and you can see that boys have got a skip in their step and are ready to play.

“Training has been great. We have a couple of new coaches, but the environment is very similar to last season. Boys are enjoying coming to work, boys are smiling around the place and that is key.”

The Rugby World Cup in Japan saw Wyn establish himself as the number one No. 1 in the Welsh game and the calendar suggests there is going to be plenty more Test rugby to come for the Llandovery man over the next 12 months.

But now it’s back to the day job and a return to Guinness PRO14 action. “It is the start of some sense of normality,” adds Wyn. “We have obviously missed playing and are all excited to be back on the park and having some competitive rugby. “It will be different with no fans in the stadium, the boys really feed off the crowd at Parc y Scarlets, but once the whistle goes you focus on the rugby. Hopefully it will be a dry day and we can play a bit of rugby.

ISSUE / RHIFYN 11

As well as family time, the break also allowed Wyn to recharge the batteries after an intense period of domestic and international rugby.

Richard Whiffin will become attack coach as part of Glenn Delaney’s back-room set-up. Richard Kelly has been part of the Scarlets coaching system since retiring as a player in 2015. He was head coach of Welsh Premiership side Carmarthen Quins for two seasons and has also been at the helm of the Scarlets A team who have been the leading Welsh side in the last two Celtic Cup campaigns. The former second row has been forwards coach for Wales U20s for the last 18 months. Kelly will be forwards coach in the senior set-up.

Richard Whiffin joined the Scarlets as assistant attack coach last summer. He has had previous roles at

He said: “I am delighted to bring Rich Kelly into the senior coaching team after the work he has done with the Academy, A side and the Wales U20s and also to welcome someone of Ben’s calibre to the Scarlets. Both bring a broad skillset to the group along with their detailed set-piece expertise and I am looking forward to seeing them add to our programme. “Rich is highly respected and has coached in our system for a number of seasons. He has been instrumental in the growth of our young players, a number of whom are stepping up to the senior squad for the coming season.

London Irish, as head of the Gloucester Academy and with England U20s. Dai Flanagan continues in his role as backs coach. Delaney, who joined the Scarlets in the summer as defence coach, was appointed Scarlets’ new head coach following the decision by Brad Mooar to return to New Zealand to take up a post with the All Blacks.

“Ben’s playing record speaks for itself. He is a double World Cup winner and has close to 50 caps for the All Blacks. I know him well from my days with my original club Linwood back in New Zealand and also with Irish and he is the ultimate professional. He started his senior coaching journey as a player coach with London Irish and has continued to coach club rugby outside of his playing commitments.”

Franks won 47 Tests for New Zealand and was a two-time World Cup winner during an illustrious playing career. He was also a member of the Crusaders squad that claimed Super Rugby titles in 2006 and 2008.

In 2015, he headed to the northern hemisphere to join London Irish where he was coached by Delaney. The 36-year-old has been at Northampton Saints for the last two seasons and in February announced his retirement from playing.

SCARLETS ANNOUNCE CHANGE AT CHAIRMAN AS PART OF EXCITING NEW BOARD RESTRUCTURING

V CARDIFF BLUES 22.08.20

In a change at board level Nigel Short has stepped down as Chairman of the Scarlets after nine years in the role. Nigel will remain an integral member of the Board, having been a driving force in strengthening the Scarlets’ position on and off the field in recent years.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 1 6

As part of an exciting restructuring at Board level, Scarlets are delighted to welcome Simon Muderack as the new Executive Chairman, while All Blacks legend Sean Fitzpatrick comes on board as a nonexecutive director and

global ambassador. Nigel replaced Huw Evans as Chairman in 2011 and under his tenure the Scarlets have established themselves as one of the leading sides in the Guinness PRO14; providing 11 players to the Wales squad that reached the semifinals of the Rugby World Cup. PRO12 champions in 201617, Scarlets were finalists the following year when they also reached the semifinals of the European Champions Cup. Scarlets have also made significant strides off the field, driven by a Board

committed to ensuring the club enjoys a sustainable future, while dedicated to the development of home-grown talent. Born and bred in Llanelli, Simon went to primary school in Furnace, then went to Llandovery College, Bath University before pursuing a 25-year career in technology. About 15 years ago he started up his software business which he subsequently sold to a North American-based company, worked in private equity and sold a subsequent business to a public company about 12 months ago.

“I’m hugely excited to be joining a club with such a rich history,” said Sean. “The tradition and the passion is so similar to New Zealand and the Scarlets is the closest to a New Zealand environment I have experienced, completely community based, with a total focus on the development of local talent and pride in their achievement. “The development structures are outstanding and the facilities at Parc y Scarlets are as good as I have seen anywhere around the world.”

PA R C Y S C A R L E T S K O / C G 1 5 : 0 0

Sean played 92 Tests at hooker for New Zealand between 1986 and 1997, leading the side on 51 occasions. A member of the All Blacks team that lifted the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup, he is recognised as one of the greats of the world game.

Now a respected media analyst and motivational speaker, he is chairman of the Laureus World Sport Academy and has been a board member at Gallagher Premiership club Harlequins since 2008.

ISSUE / RHIFYN 11

He said: “This is a massive honour for me, it fills me with a huge amount of pride and I also fully understand the responsibility that comes with it. It is an opportunity to get involved with the club I have been a supporter of since I was young and it comes at a very interesting time within the broader context of the game of rugby. I am very appreciative of the opportunity, recognise the privilege it is to be involved with the club in such a fashion and I am looking forward to working with the club to help to drive it forward.”

SIONE KALAMAFONI

TYLER MORGAN

The powerful ball-carrier, who can play blindside flanker and No. 8, has joined the Scarlets from Leicester Tigers.

The 24-year-old centre brings with him international pedigree having been capped five times for Wales. Tyler made his Test debut against Ireland in a World Cup warmup match in 2015 and featured against Fiji and South Africa during the global tournament. His last cap came against Tonga at the Principality Stadium in 2018.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 2 2

Sione was a big favourite during his three-year spell at Welford Road and before that spent five seasons with Premiership rivals Gloucester. His first experience of English rugby had been with Nottingham when Scarlets head coach Glenn Delaney was in charge of the Championship club. Capped 37 times by Tonga, he made his international debut 13 years ago and has featured for the islanders in three Rugby World Cups, delivering a memorable man-of-the-match display in the stunning upset over France in 2011.

A product of the Dragons Academy, the Newport-born player made his regional debut against the Scarlets in an LV=Cup game at Parc y Scarlets in 2013.

ISSUE / RHIFYN 11

SAM COSTELOW

Johnny has spent the last two seasons at Newcastle Falcons after coming through the ranks at London Irish.

The talented 19-year-old earned rave reviews for his performances for Wales U20s during the 2020 Six Nations. From Pencoed, he was part of the Ospreys U16s set-up before moving to Leicester Tigers.

He won the Junior World Championships with England U20s in 2016 and after an impressive first campaign with the Falcons, represented the England senior team in an uncapped match against the Barbarians at Twickenham, scoring a try in the 51-43 victory. The strong-running centre is qualified to play for Wales with his father Gareth hailing from Rhyl in North Wales.

JOHNNY WILLIAMS

He has made a couple of senior appearances for Leicester in Europe this season and has also been on loan with Greene King IPA Championship side Ampthill. But it has been during this year’s U20s campaign that he has hit the headlines, scoring a superb solo try in the opening match against Italy in Colwyn Bay and then completing a full house in a man-of-the-match display against England at Kingsholm. SCARLETS CONFIRM COACHING AND PLAYING DEPARTURES

V CARDIFF BLUES 22.08.20

We said farewell to head coach Brad Mooar, forwards coach Ioan Cunningham and eight members of the playing squad during an emotional ‘Zoom’ presentation during lockdown. Following discussions with the coaching group and management, it was decided that when the rugby group did return to Parc y Scarlets in July it would be with the coaches and players for the 2020-21 season.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 2 7

Scarlets confirmed in December that Brad Mooar would be linking up with Ian Foster’s All Blacks coaching team. Brad made an indelible impact in his brief time at the Scarlets, instilling a culture that new head coach Glenn Delaney and his coaching team will look to build on.

Ioan Cunningham left us after eight years in the Scarlets coaching system, graduating through the Academy, semiprofessional teams, development side into the senior ranks. A former Llanelli RFC captain, Ioan played an integral role as forwards coach in the Guinness PRO12 title triumph of 2016-17. Ioan has since taken up a role heading up an elite development partnership between the Scarlets and Llandovery College. The players moving on were Hadleigh Parkes, Kieron Fonotia, Corey Baldwin, Jonathan Evans, Morgan Williams, Simon Gardiner, Rhys Fawcett and Tom James, who has retired from professional rugby.

Wales 7s cap Morgan Williams left the Scarlets after featuring in 15 matches over three seasons, scoring four tries. Experienced tight-head prop Simon Gardiner played 66 matches during two spells at Parc y Scarlets covering eight seasons, while loose-head prop Rhys Fawcett was at the Scarlets since 2015, playing 10 matches.

PA R C Y S C A R L E T S K O / C G 1 5 : 0 0

Hadleigh Parkes arrived at Parc y Scarlets in October 2014 from Auckland and played 122 matches in a Scarlets jersey over six seasons. He was Scarlets player of the season in 201516 after playing every minute of every Guinness PRO12 match and a key member of the Scarlets title-winning squad of 2017. His ultra-consistent performances at the heart of the Scarlets threequarter line earned him a Wales Test call-up and a place in Warren Gatland’s World Cup squad in 2019. He has joined Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan.

Wales international wing Tom James announced his retirement from professional rugby and has been focusing on a career in personal fitness.

Another member of the matchday squad that lifted the PRO12 trophy in Dublin, Jonathan Evans spent four seasons in West Wales. The former Dragons and Bath scrum-half made 52 appearances in all.

Sports therapist Alice Rees left the Scarlets after five years as a valued member of the medical team at Parc y Scarlets.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 2 8

Kieron Fonotia headed across the Loughor from the Ospreys two years ago. A member of the 2019 Samoa World Cup squad, ‘Fonz’ has returned to New Zealand. Academy product Corey Baldwin has joined Exeter Chiefs. A Wales U20s cap, Corey made 24 appearances in the senior side, including 16 this season.

OPPOSITION LIKE THE SCARLETS, CARDIFF BLUES HAVE BID FAREWELL TO A PLAYER FROM THE LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD WHO HAS MADE SOUTH WALES VERY MUCH HIS HOME IN RECENT YEARS.

V CARDIFF BLUES 22.08.20

While Hadleigh Parkes said sayonara as he embarked on his new adventure in the Far East, the Arms Park faithful have been coming to terms with the announcement that barnstorming No. 8 Nick Williams is hanging up his boots. Williams earned himself legendary status during his four seasons in the Welsh capital, a gentle giant off the field, but a one-man wrecking ball on it. The 36-year-old brings down the curtain on a 16-year playing career which also included spells at North Harbour, Auckland Blues, Munster, Aironi and Ulster. “Nick has been an enormous figure for us both on and off the field and will be missed by all of us at the Arms Park,” said Blues head coach John Mulvihill.

All five represented Scarlets U16s during the regional age-grade championship this season.

22.08.20

Josh Phillips From Porth in the Rhondda, Josh has been playing rugby since the age of seven, featuring in the Dewar Shield for Rhondda Schools before being selected for the Blues North U16s squad and the Blues U18s squads. PAG E / T U D A L E N 3 2

Luca is a pupil at St John Lloyd Catholic Comprehensive School in Llanelli and plays his club rugby for Llanelli Wanderers RFC. Lucca played with Llanelli Schools U15s prior to the Scarlets U16s age-grade side. A dynamic ball carrier, he has good qualities in the contact area with the

ability to turn the ball over. Lucca also has the skillset to play across the back row. Tal Rees Tal is a pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Maes y Gwendraeth and plays his club rugby for Tumble RFC. A product of Mynydd Mawr and Dinefwr Schools U15s, Tal has demonstrated excellent decision-making skills as a 10 and has the eye for a gap with the ability to deliver subtle offloads. He also has the ability to distribute the ball off both hands accurately putting other people in space. Iestyn Gwilliam Iestyn is also a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Maes y Gwendraeth and plays his club rugby for Tumble RFC. Like Tal. Iestyn was a product of Mynydd Mawr and Dinefwr Schools U15s.

MATTHEW J WATKINS 1978-2020

V CARDIFF BLUES 22.08.20

The game of rugby united to pay tribute to former Scarlets centre Matthew J Watkins, who passed away at the age of 41 in March. ‘MJ’ played 150 matches in a Scarlets jersey between 2002 and 2008, scoring 42 tries, including one against Ulster at Stradey Park that helped the side clinch the 2003-04 Celtic League title. He is fondly remembered as a silky-skilled, creative midfielder, who was a hugely popular figure among our supporters and the playing squad and staff at Stradey.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 3 9

In 2013, Matthew was diagnosed with a rare form of pelvic cancer. In recent years he helped raise thousands of pounds with fundraising events for Welsh Cancer Centre Velindre, where he was receiving treatment. “Matthew was an excellent rugby player and, above all, a lovely man,” said Scarlets president Phil Bennett.

“There was a modesty and humility about him and a concern for others. “I spoke to him a while back and, despite his illness, he did his best to be positive. His love for his family shone through and it was quite inspiring and a privilege to talk to him. “We are all there for his wife Stacey and the children should they need us. “The world has lost a special individual in Matthew.” Former Scarlets fly-half Jonathan Davies, the president of Velindre charity, said on social media: “What a lovely guy who took on cancer with courage and always had a smile on his face. Lived life to the full and was always smiling. Ex-Wales and Scarlets back Morgan Stoddart said: “Brilliant character that made everyone laugh when in his company. Top man x”. Welsh referee Nigel Owens said: “My sincerest and deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Had the pleasure of his company on and off the field on a few occasions. A wonderful person. God bless”.

A larger than life character who would light up a room, Andrew ‘Tommo’ Thomas, the voice of Parc y Scarlets will be missed by all the Scarlets family. Tommo passed away suddenly at the end of last month at the age of 53 with tributes pouring in for the popular radio presenter. A proud Welsh-speaking West Walian and a passionate Scarlet, he would always bring his infectious personality to the mic on match-days. For the 2018 Guinness PRO14 final in Dublin he was bursting with pride when he represented the Scarlets as part of the match-day entertainment at the Aviva Stadium. Scarlets head coach Glenn Delaney said: “This is desperately sad news. Tommo will be greatly missed by us all. I’ll miss his smile, energy and passion. Gone too soon, much love to his family at this terrible time.”

To the family and friends of Andrew Tommo Thomas, condolences from my family and myself.” Wales prop Rob Evans said: “Really sad to hear the news about Tommo. Thoughts are with his family, a great man full of laughs.” Centre Steff Hughes said: “He was such a wonderful character, on match days as we walked in he would give all the boys a hug in the tunnel, wishing them all the best, he was always fantastic to be around and will be massively missed around here.” Title-winning Ireland lock Tadhg Beirne, now with Munster, said: “Very sad news to hear of the passing of Tommo. An absolute gentleman, a passionate Welshman, and a true Scarlet.” Tommo had been with BBC Radio Cymru between 2014 and 2018. He then left to present a daily programme on Nation Broadcasting station. In 2011 he won the Radio Presenter of the Year award for his work on Nation stations in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. Rhuanedd Richards, Editor of BBC Radio Cymru, said: “Tommo was proud of his roots and a unique broadcaster who loved to entertain his audience on Radio Cymru. With his powerful voice and larger than life personality, his love for his family, west Wales and of course the Scarlets were a great influence on his broadcasting.”

Attack coach Richard Whiffin tweeted: “Incredibly sad news. Tommo will be greatly missed by us all. Will miss his match day hugs! Love to his friends & family at this terrible time.” Referee Nigel Owens took to social media to say: “Rwy methu credu y peth. Well I am devastated. A great

PETER REES 1925-2020

V CARDIFF BLUES 22.08.20

A former player, chairman and president Peter Rees has been described as one of the greats of Llanelli Rugby Football Club. From Penygroes in West Wales, Peter made his debut for the club in September 1945 at the age of 20 and went on to win two caps for Wales on the wing — against France in Paris and Ireland at St Helen’s. Before his death at the start of August, he was the oldest surviving Wales international. A former club chairman and president, Peter was instrumental in building the outstanding side of the late sixties and seventies that was regarded as one the best club teams in the world. It was Peter who persuaded the great Carwyn James to coach the Scarlets. Eighteen months later he was leading the British & Irish Lions in New Zealand. Former Llanelli, Wales Lions fly-half, Phil Bennett, the current Scarlets president, was part of that side and paid a glowing tribute to Peter. PAG E / T U D A L E N 4 1

“I don’t use the word great lightly, but Peter Rees was one of the greats of Llanelli Rugby Football Club,” he said. “When Peter was voted in as chairman we were a young team full of local boys. We hadn’t won the Welsh Championship for a long time, but Norman Gale was made captain, a real masterstroke; Peter

brought in Tom Hudson as rugby’s first professional fitness coach to make us one of the fittest sides around and, of course, Carwyn James, who in my eyes is the greatest coach rugby has seen, became our coach. “It transformed us as a team. “Peter’s contribution to the Scarlets is immeasurable and we all owe him a huge amount. “You’d see him up in the lounge at Parc y Scarlets, immaculately dressed in his Llanelli blazer and tie and he was a hugely popular figure. He will be sorely missed by everyone and is a massive loss to this wonderful club. “My condolences go to Peter’s family at this sad time, but they should be so proud of what he achieved for his beloved Scarlets.” A life member and debenture holder, Peter was a spectator at our last match at Parc y Scarlets against Southern Kings. Nigel Short, who recently stepped down as Scarlets chairman, said: “Peter was dearly loved by all at the Scarlets. My admiration for him was huge and his sage advice during my time as chairman invaluable. “He will be missed enormously, but his soul will always be a part of our DNA. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and many friends.”

PARC Y SCARLETS BECOMES ‘YSBYTY ENFYS SCARLETS’ DURING LOCKDOWN

Three sites at the stadium — the indoor training barn, the Quinnell Lounge and the first floor concourse in the South Stand — were converted into medical facilities, providing 350 beds for the local health authority.

Carmarthenshire County Council and Hywel Dda worked with the Scarlets on the transformation of the stadium from the end of March.

The end result was Ysbyty Enfys Scarlets — one of eight hospital facilities across the Hywel Dda Health Board region. The name Enfys (rainbow) reflected the symbol of hope chosen for the pandemic. Scarlets general manager of rugby Jon Daniels said at the time: “It’s been incredible to see how quickly the sites at the stadium have been converted and that is down to the tireless work of everyone involved, from local contractors, volunteers and our staff here at Parc y Scarlets. SCARLETS’ GRASSROOTS CLUBS SHOW COMMUNITY SPIRIT IN DELIVERING VITAL PACKAGES

V CARDIFF BUES 22.08.20

Scarlets Community Foundation joined forces with their grassroots clubs and business partners to help deliver more than a thousand care packages across the region during lockdown. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of local businesses and a grant from the Community Foundations Wales Coronavirus Resilience Fund, food packages were delivered to vulnerable families and individuals during three separate rounds of deliveries. Scarlets players Jac Morgan, Kieran Hardy, Osian Knott, Dylan Evans, Tom Rogers and Ryan Conbeer lent their support to the operation, with the final phase of deliveries seeing an ‘Afternoon Tea Pack’ taken to care homes across West Wales. Scarlets commercial partners Tesco (Trostre), Blas y Tir, Nando’s Llanelli and Burns Pet Foods made donations to the scheme; Oil4Wales provided fuel for the vans, while

Carmarthenshire food wholesaler Castell Howell, a long-standing supporter of rugby in the community, helped to coordinate the deliveries and also provide vital food for the packs. Scarlets Community Foundation manager Caroline Newman said: “It has been a privilege to be able to support so many people who are in need in these strange times. The Foundation and local clubs have provided a little bit of help for more than a thousand families during the pandemic. “We are grateful to Community Foundations Wales for a grant to help continue the deliveries and the addition of care homes has meant we can show our appreciation for the challenges staff and residents are experiencing by offering a small treat for them to enjoy.”

THOUGHTS FROM THE HALFWAY BY OWAIN BADGER

V CARDIFF BLUES

The Scarlets never fail to surprise, despite five months of lockdown. Today’s game against Cardiff Blues is the first for five months, the longest period of no rugby for 75 years when sport returned after the Second World War.

22.08.20

It has left players, coaches and supporters frustrated and the professional game facing serious financial problems. We have also seen the sad passing of two staunch Scarlets, the flamboyant match announcer Tommo and the legendary former player and chairman Peter Rees. Surprisingly, it has also been a time which has enhanced the Scarlets name. The former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick joined the board, announced he had always been a fan and wanted the Scarlets brand to be a world leader. Then last week, our former player John Barclay announced his retirement and praised the uniqueness of the Scarlets. You would then think that the Scarlets had been the Llanelli brand from the start. In true committee fashion it was never that simple.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 5 2

In the early 1870s the club played in blue. Indeed, in one trial match the players could wear any colours with the only difference between the teams was that one side wore caps. The ‘no caps’ won, presumably because the caps kept falling off and the players had to stop and pick them up! The team soon got bored with blue and briefly changed to blue and white. Then in 1880 when they played Neath, they wore black jerseys and trousers with red and black stockings. This

confused the referee and supporters as Neath also had black jerseys with the famous Maltese Cross. The town’s drapers must have been making a fortune as the committee then decided to change the club colours again to rose and primrose. There was uproar when the club members refused to accept the new strip. The committee resigned, but a newly-elected committee stuck with the fetching new colours. This didn’t last long and two seasons later they sanctioned another change to red and chocolate. By now even the drapers lost their patience as the supporters weren’t buying the merchandise. Hardened tinplate workers refused to wear the rose and primrose coloured mufflers and flat caps let alone the new chocolate and red quarters. There was another crisis meeting and when Llaneli played the Irish national team in 1884 they saw that the visitors wore one colour, green. So the team ran onto Stradey in scarlet for the first time. There was an immediate demand for scarlet mufflers in the town and the Scarlets brand was born. Today, when the team runs out onto an empty Parc y Scarlets to face the Blues, wear your merchandise with pride when you watch at home. It took a bit of struggle to create the brand, but since that day against Ireland the Scarlets have never looked back.

everyone and really feels a deep sense of purpose and connection to the players and to the club.

‘The Sheriff’ as he is popularly known, will eclipse the previous record for consecutive seasons in charge — previously held by the great Phil Bennett — when he continues with the armband for the new campaign.

“The leadership group we have is a wonderfully dynamic, diverse group with different opinions and views and they support him 100%. Ken brings them all in and that is a wonderful skill he has got, his ability to bring people into the decision-making process when he needs it.”

The Wales and British & Irish Lions hooker has skippered the Scarlets since 2013 when he took over from Rob McCusker and Jonathan Davies. He said: “It is always a huge honour to lead the Scarlets and a proud moment to pass the record held by such a Scarlets icon as Phil Bennett. “I am fortunate to have a strong leadership group alongside me with a huge amount of experience in the game. The boys are excited about returning to rugby against Cardiff Blues and finishing this season on a high before getting stuck into the next campaign.” Scarlets head coach Glenn Delaney added: “Ken is our leader, he is also our spiritual leader. He is the heartbeat of our team and if you look at Welsh rugby as a whole, he is going to be up there in a very select group of people who are unbelievably respected by all Welsh players.

Glenn added: “Clearly, Ken has had a huge workload and I needed to be fair; it would have been really easy for me just to say ‘I would love you to do it’ and that would put undue pressure. We talked about it together, he was fresh and ready to go and said ‘I’ll do whatever you want’. Once he said that, it was a very easy decision for me. The decision was pretty much made by his peer group. “We are lucky to have such a great man who is reaching legendary status at this club to lead us forward for another season.” While Ken has surpassed Benny’s record for most successive seasons in charge, two other players have captained the Scarlets for eight seasons - Fred Margrave and Ivor Jones. You wouldn’t bet against Ken joining that elite company this time next year. PAG E / T U D A L E N 5 5

BEN FRANKS RELISHING NEW SCRUM CHALLENGE AT PARC Y SCARLETS

V CARDIFF BUES 22.08.20

New scrum coach Ben Franks believes the emerging young front-rowers at the Scarlets will learn a huge amount from training alongside the international contingent in the squad. The Scarlets pack boasts six international front-row forwards — skipper Ken Owens, Ryan Elias, Rob Evans, Wyn Jones, Samson Lee and Springbok Werner Kruger — players with a vast amount of experience to pass down to the next generation. Double World Cup winner Franks joined Glenn Delaney’s coaching team in the summer and has already been impressed with what he has seen.

PAG E / T U D A L E N 5 8

In an interview as part of S4C’s coverage of today’s match against Cardiff Blues, the 47-cap All Black said: “We’ve got a good mixture of experience and youth in the front row. We’ve got Ken Owens at one end and on the other end we’ve got some really talented academy kids.

“It’s a good opportunity for the young guys to learn and for me to listen to the older guys to see what they need. For me, learning was always motivating so if they are excited about learning and excited about the scrum sessions then that will help them improve. “I’ve loved working with them so far. It’s not about me it’s about what those guys want to do because they are the ones on the field and they are the ones who have got to execute it. “It’s good to be part of a group where there’s a good mix of experience and youth. “There’s a lot of quality players in the Scarlets pack but the actual strength of the scrum is not about individual players it’s about working as an eight. That’s the toughest thing. “You can take players out individually and help them work on areas where they can improve on but getting them to work collectively as a pack is the

real key to success. So that’s what we’ve been trying to spend a lot of time on. “The thing with scrums is that sometimes it just takes time. There’s combinations of working with guys and as an eight. “Confidence is also a big part of a successful scrum. There’s no magic formula. “Over a number of games building some confidence can bring a scrum forward a long way. I’d like to think I can help them but I know it’s a process.” Previously with Northampton Saints, Franks announced his retirement from rugby earlier this season. He said: “It was a good opportunity for me. I announced my retirement quite early before the lockdown and then on the first weekend of lockdown I got a call from Glenn (Delaney). “It was too good of an opportunity for me to turn down. I’ve worked with Glenn

before so I knew he’d be someone who I could work with while he’s also someone who could challenge me. “I knew Scarlets are a good club. They have a lot of talented players and a great history so to be part of that was appealing. “Also me and my family are small town people and now that we live in Hendy it fits us to a tee. It ticked all the boxes for me both professionally and family wise.”

CUP

Gall pob clwb feddwl am wharaewyr ddyle fod wedi câl cap ond yn achos y Scarlets ma’ ‘na o leia’ dri arwr sy’n sefyll mâs fel rhai gafodd gam yn lle cap! Yr un mwya’ amlwg yw’r hynaws Gareth Jenkins. Mor hir yw ei gysylltiad ‘da Llanelli a’r Scarlets mae’n anodd coelio ei fod wedi gorfod rhoi’r gore iddi ac ynte ddim ond yn 26 mlwydd oed. Ond mewn gyrfa o gwta naw mlynedd fel wharaewr mae’n anodd credu na lwyddodd e i wisgo crys coch Cymru.

wlad yn erbyn Tonga yn 1974 ond ni ddyfarnwyd capie rhyngwladol. Digwyddodd yr un peth i ddau wharaewr arall yn y gêm honno – y cefnwr Chris Bolderson o Bontypridd a’r prop Gerry Wallace o Gaerdydd. Crys ond dim cap! Tan ddaeth Capie’r Llywydd i fodolaeth. Trueni Roy oedd ei fod e’n whare yn yr un cyfnod â Jeff Young a Bobby Windsor.

Do, fe gafodd Gareth wisgo crys Cymru yn erbyn Japan mewn buddugoliaeth o 82 i 6 yn 1975 ond gêm heb gapie oedd honno. Do, fe ddyfarnwyd Cap y Llywydd iddo yn 2013 – yn haeddiannol ond, diawch, roedd e’n haeddu llawer mwy, weden i.

Yr olaf yn y drindod anlwcus yw Andy Hill. Mewn oes pan oedd cais ond werth tri phwynt shwt yn y byd ma’ modd anwybyddu boi sgoriodd 2,597 pwynt i’w glwb? A rwy’n amau’n fawr y daw unrhyw un yn agos i sgorio 312 cais i’w glwb chwaith. I rwto halen yn y briw i’r hen Andy druan, yn ei lyfr Great Moments in Sport: Rugby Football mae J B G Thomas yn dweud taw Phil Bennett yn hytrach na Andy Hill giciodd y gic gosb o 50 llath i wneud y sgôr enwog 9 – 3 yn erbyn y Cryse Duon. Roedd pawb yn gwybod taw cefnogwr Caerdydd oedd J B G. Mae’n hen bryd i ni atgoffa’r brifddinas taw West Is Best!

Tristach mewn llawer ffordd oedd hanes y bachwr Roy Thomas. Yn wahanol i Gareth Jenkins roedd ‘Shunto’ ym meddwl y dewiswyr yn gyson – wedi’r cyfan bu’n eilydd ar y fainc dim llai na 25 o weithe dros 6 mlynedd. Ond mewn oes pan nad oedd modd cael eilydd oni bai bod wharaewr wedi’i anafu chafodd e eriôd y fraint o gamu ar y cae rhyngwladol. Wel, dim cweit. Dewiswyd Shunto i gynrychioli ei

Anlwc Gareth oedd ei fod yn whare pan oedd John Taylor ar ei orau mewn rheng ôl oedd yn dewis ei hunan – Taylor, Dai Morris a Mervyn Davies. Wedi hynny,

Terry Cobner oedd ffefryn y dewiswyr. Ond y gwir amdani yw, pan nad oedd John Taylor ar gael – rhywbeth prin iawn – Dennis Hughes o Drecelyn gâth yr alwad. Gyda phob parch, beth ddigwyddodd i hwnnw wedyn tybed? Yn eironig ddigon, pan ddewiswyd blaenasgellwr o Lanelli i ymuno ‘da Mervyn Davies a Dai Morris, Tom David gafodd yr alwad.

“Hir pob aros” medde’r hen air. Pwy oedd yn meddwl ar ddechre’r tymor nôl ym mis Medi y llynedd y bydden ni’n dal i ddishgwl am ddiwedd y tymor ym mis Awst yn hytrach nag edrych mlân i dymor newydd. Er mor rhwystredig yw’r sefyllfa tra’n bod ni’n dishgwl i normalrwydd ddychwelyd, jyst meddyliwch pa mor rhwystredig oedd yr aros di-ddiwedd i ennill cap rhyngwladol hollol haeddiannol.
