This is an innovative online session for 8th-10th graders interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Students will complete a STEM challenge at home, learn STEM topics in class, develop their communication skills, and hear from STEM professionals and college students.
Description: What social issues drive you? What’s your plan to change the world? We’re ready to see you explore your ideas! If you want to become a leader and make the world a better place, you need to convince people to join your cause. One way to do that is to show people data about how things are now. In this camp, you will select a societal issue that is important to you. Then you will use mathematics to create a visualization of data that demonstrates the need for change. Finally, you will give a presentation to convince people to join your cause. The program will be conducted by the Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity in Education at Rice University.
Mathematics content covered: proportions, algebra, length, area.
