Blackbridge Security #2

Shot in the Dark

Rate this book
As an IT expert and hacker extraordinaire, Wren Nelson is no stranger to discovering all sorts of secrets online.

He’s a warrior…when he’s behind his computer, that is.

And awkward at best in social situations.

His long hours with Blackbridge Security don’t really provide many opportunities to go out and meet people.

So what is he supposed to do when a wrong delivery—a questionably large box of bedroom toys—ends up in his hands instead of its intended target?

Online stalking has always been his go-to to accumulate information on people, but only seeing Whitney through digital displays isn’t enough. Approaching her doesn’t seem like the best plan either.

What he doesn’t know is that this woman is possibly the only one in existence able to give him a run for his money.

A smart (IT) man that’s hot and kinky? YES PLEASE

There is something that’s so enticing about a man that is extremely smart yet sexy, and this one is somewhat of a “geek” (who plays video games), but man is he 🥵.

Wren is a hacker, a really REALLY good one, works for BBS (Blackbridge Security), and specializes in IT. He receives a package addressed to W. Nelson and takes it to work, not knowing it’s supposed to be for someone else, Whitney Nelson. He opens the package at work and is surprised to find it full of adult toys, kinky adult toys. So what does his curious, hacker mind do? He starts investigating who it belongs to, and then he starts stalking her 😬 (virtually). Whitney is also a computer geek, an independent contractor, and lives three floors below Wren. She tends to stay inside, opting to get everything she needs delivered to her, including food, but she only leaves her apartment to work out. Of course, he uses this opportunity to stalk her even more. He even ends up finding out some of the forums, adult forums, that she has visited and posted in. He ends of figuring out that she and he are a lot more compatible in many ways than he could have ever imagined, seeing as she is a natural submissive, which is perfect because he’s a dominant.

What I also loved about him is that he might be a dominant, sexy geek, but he is also human, and clumsy LOL. He joins her team on an online game called Orc’s Realm, an adult game that is voyeuristic in nature, purposefully meeting her there. The sexy talk during their gaming was 🥵💦. When she relents to getting coffee, it’s game over folks, because their chemistry becomes a conflagration. He quickly lets her know that he’s the dominant she needs to her submissive side… when they talk about safe words and their limits 🥵🔥. Wow. It was hawwwwwwwt!!!! They don’t have sex for a while, but all the snacks leading up to the main course meals were 🔥… dear Lortd, I needed a glass of wine and a cigarette after 🥵💦👀🔥😅😉. The way he just naturally ordered her and she naturally obeyed was sexy as f.

The side characters were hilarious! His nana was cool…. But the star of the show was Puff Daddy, his parrot. I was SOOO embarrassed for everyone around him 😂😂😂. He made me LOL many times! His comments were 🙈😱. At some point, I’ll read book one to get to Deacon and Anna’s story , but I’m looking forward to Flynn’s.

Highly recommended!

-no cheating/sharing/owd or omd I think…
-there are BDSM elements (one club scene- but it’s not nearly as graphic as it could’ve been)
-natural D/s relationship with safe words and limit talk

I have been waiting for Wren Nelson's story ever since he opened a box of sex toys in HOSTILE TERRITORY that was meant for his neighbor W. Nelson and not him. Talk about awkward! This poor guy was at a loss for words when everything came spilling out of the box and I swear I couldn't stop laughing, and the laughs didn't stop there because his parrot Puff Daddy is one dirty talking bird, I have to warn you not to drink anything while reading because there is a good chance you'll loose it when Puff Daddy gets going.

I love Wren and Whitney but in all honesty it’s Puff Daddy that killed me.

I only read it because I have some weird obsession with hackers okay.

Wren is great. A total nerd but socially challenged. Whitney is his female counterpart in every way. When he finds out her secret desires match his, Dom Wren comes to play. With the foul mouthed parrot and a stubborn cat it's a fun filled story.

Another great book from this author. I think this will appeal to all the computer geeks out there. Although his obsession went a little far, it proved useful in the end. I did not see that twist coming.

Although this series is slightly on the lighter side of things thanks to Puff Daddy and his foul mouth, I wouldn't change a thing, apart from a few inconsistencies at the beginning but that parrot gets his own star for being so awesome.

Definitely recommend

Too Much Kink & Not Enough Warning

This isn’t romantic suspense! This started out slow with only a hint at mild kink, but once the couple started to interact, it became clear this was full-on BDSM Erotica. I wish the author had given a clear warning to the kink running rampant in this book, because I would have steered clear.

I am NOT a fan of BDSM books, because, for the most part, it’s porn in writing, and a total turn off for me, especially when it creates a predictable plot, with little character development. It also portrayed computer nerds as closet sex addicts, who enjoy playing out sexual fantasies online. I don’t agree with this type of labeling/pigeon-holing.

I’m always disappointed when books marketed as romance are primarily erotica. It’s not that I don’t enjoy sex and chemistry, but NOT without love and romance, as the motivating force. In this case, I felt like I needed to give up completely around 70% and just skimmed the rest. Even skimming, I found the last 30% to be just crass and raunchy.

ARC REVIEW

I was sooo looking forward to this book after the first in the series. I was wondering how Wren's story would play out and I must say, I am a little surprised by a few things. I wasn't expecting Wren to be the demanding guy he was. I loved how clumsy he seemed to be, especially around Whitney.

The chemistry between the couple was hot. The content, hotter! I really enjoyed the storyline and the suspense added in as well. The books writing flowed well and I was never uninterested in what was happening, and was pretty much captivated from the first page. I devoured this read pretty quickly!

I can't wait to find out what is happening in the next book!

SHOT IN THE DARK is the second instalment in Marie James’ contemporary, adult BLACKBRIDGE SECURITY erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women who work for Blackbridge Security. This is twenty-six year old, IT expert and hacker Wren Nelson, and twenty-four year old, independent contractor Whitney Nelson’s story line. SHOT IN THE DARK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary. Some of the events of SHOT IN THE DARK cross over with, and run parallel to the events of book one HOSTILE TERRITORY.

WARNING : SHOT IN THE DARK contains scenes of BDSM, as well as Dom/sub sexual play including rape and kidnapping fantasies that may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Wren and Whitney) SHOT IN THE DARK follows the building relationship between is twenty-six year old, IT expert and hacker Wren Nelson, and twenty-four year old, independent IT contractor Whitney Nelson. A mysterious package with x-rated contents arrives at Wren Nelson’s front door but Wren was never the intended recipient, and as such, begins an on-line search for the other W. Nelson, a woman who lives just three floors below. Using security cameras and online stalking, Wren quickly discovers that W. Nelson aka Whitney Nelson is a woman not without some excellent computer skills of her own. Struggling to face the woman that calls to his heart, Wren goes about seducing our story line heroine via online gaming and singles apps, only to discover that Whitney has been pulled into dangerous game of secrets and lies. With Whitney on the run, Wren pulls together the team at Blackbridge Security in an effort to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Whitney and Wren, and the potential fall-out when Whitney discovers the true extent of Wren’s obsessive behavior.

Wren Nelson is a Dominant in the bedroom but struggles to meet woman outside of the lifestyle, of which, no one he knows is aware but Wren has found a kindred spirit in our story line heroine, a true submissive in the bedroom, who prefers a little kink on the side. Her best friend a Domme, Wren’s package of sexual toys has landed in the hands of our story line hero, a man who is not above doing a little bit of investigative reconnaissance of his own.

The relationship between Whitney and Wren begins as an online affair including a gaming relationship that becomes extremely sexual, as well as the voyeuristic nature of the other players. Wren is a Dominant who demands submission in the bedroom, and Whitney is the perfect foil for our hero’s needs and demands. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense- including some light bondage, discipline, and abduction fantasy- without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to security specialist and Blackbridge Security (BBS) owner Deacon Black, and Annalise Grimaldi (Hostile Territory #1), and BBS members Flynn Coleman (BBS Second in Command), Finnegan Jenkins (BBS mechanical engineer) , Ignacio Torres, Jude Morris, Quinten Lake, Gaige, and Brooks; as well as Wren’s dirty mouthed African Grey parrot Puff Daddy, and Whitney’s cat Simon. Puff Daddy steals many of the scenes throughout the story.

SHOT IN THE DARK is a story of secret and lies; betrayal and trust; relationships, friendships, romance and love. The premise is engaging and spicy; the romance is provocative and captivating; the characters are energetic, charismatic and fun.

I received a free copy of this book from the author.

So if you read the first book in this series, Hostile Territory, you met Wren and his crazy parrot.  If you've not read it you can still read Shot in the Dark without having done so.  That bird is hilarious.

Anyway, Wren received a package at his apartment marked for W. Nelson.  He doesn't check the apartment number though.  Once he gets to work and opens the package he realizes his mistake too late.  Wren might have gotten a big surprise with that box but it lead him to Whitney Nelson and boy was he head over heels before he knew what hit him.

Once Wren figures out how to meet Whitney - starting online then moving to in person - things start to heat up from there.  They're each others perfect partner. Though there is something Wren forgets to tell Whitney...there's a box of toys in his closet with her name on it.  Oops!

Y'all know I always say communication is key.  No time like the present to come clean Wren.  Thankfully it works out in his favor but not before Whitney makes him work for it.

Oh...and I didn't mention that there's some other stuff going on on here that requires the Blackbridge security guys jumping on to help Whitney when she's in trouble.  Y'all didn't think the author would leave out the guys did you?

Alright, hop to it.  Time to get your hands on Shot in the Dark.  Let me know what you think of Wren and Whitney.

I really enjoyed this story it was fun and flirty and had a plot that was unusual making the story fun and fresh along with having great characters.

Wren was a character who was downright hilarious, smart, sexy, nerdy, clumsy, shy, but, most of all just an all-around nice guy. I loved he was all these things but, he also had this dominating and commanding presence about him which we loved even more. For Wren the statement never judge a book by its cover fits him to a T because the man loves to dominate and is into kinky sex who new lol...

Whitney we loved her to she was smart and beautiful and is into exploring her sexuality even though she struggles with her needs and wants, fears, past experiences, and is one not so easily read because she is always in self-protection mode and with her job it is understandable.

The pets in this scenario downright hilarious and that bird Puff Daddy made us constantly laugh but, we love how over the top both these characters were about their pets because it was super sweet.

Overall the story was just a lot of fun as we found ourselves constantly laughing out loud. I loved the chemistry these two had together, and we loved the cat and mouse game they played because all that sexual frustration build upended with a whole lot of fire. We loved that these characters felt real and no matter how smart and confident they were when it came to their careers they both had their own insecurities just like the rest of us. The other characters were awesome as well. I found myself smiling through the entire story and Wren you were quite a surprise!

One misdelivery and Wren's deep into obsessive stalker mode over the real recipient of the box of sex toys. Soon he's finding his superior IT skills come in handy as he finds ways to engage her online, quickly falling head over heels with her. But when he finally meets her face to face, will his awkward social skills be a hindrance or will Whitney find him as adorable as he finds her?

Though Wren may be awkward in person, he's absolutely delicious and dominant in the bedroom, and soon Whitney's falling just as Wren did. Will she ever forgive him when she finds out his lies of omission? Will she allow him and Blackbridge to protect her, then walk out of his life when it's safe?

Just like Annalise and Deacon's story, Hostile Territory, Whitney and Wren's story is entertaining, suspenseful and sexy. There's an added BDSM component, as Wren and Whitney explore his Dom and her sub kinks, and it makes the story even hotter, especially when contrasted with Wren's awkward behavior outside the bedroom. The story leads into Flynn's story, which I'm eagerly awaiting and can tell is going to be equally exciting as the previous two Blackbridge stories have been.

I kinda waffled between 3.5 and 4

The couple: Wren and Whitney

Romance genre: romantic suspense
Series: Blackbridge Security
Length: 257 pages

Plot: Wren stops by his apartment's leasing office and picks up a package they're holding for him. He gets to his office and opens the box. Turns out it's full of sex toys - definitely not his box. But when he looks at the package, it says "W. Nelson" but with the wrong apartment number. Turns out, there's a Whitney Nelson in the same building which Wren finds out by using his extreme hacking skills. Once he sees her, he can't stop watching her. He learns everything he can about her. Finally, he meets her. But she's reluctant at first, and then she's in danger. And when things are steady again, will she understand why he did what he did?

Character development: Not gonna lie - I always thought Wren was a girl's name, and so I was having to recalibrate all throughout the book.
Anyways, I thought it was a little funny that a hacker who made it her literal job to find out everything about people - for money - was mad at someone for doing the same to her - for love. I also wondered throughout the book whether there was something specific to make Whitney's social anxiety so bad that she never wanted to leave the house. Also - can parrots really have conversations like that?! Finally they were very compatible sex-wise, and that was probably the best part of the story.

Next book in the series: Contingency Plan

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review.
Be careful when you receive a package, first thing is to make sure it is yours before you open it. Because you might not want to know what is in the box. That is what happened to Wren when he opened a box and realized it was something not meant for him. The items inside did get his attention though. He wanted to meet the person the box was supposed to go to.
Whitney doesn't know what happened to the box her friend sent to her. When she went to the mailroom at her apartment building, she was handed a box but it was for the wrong tenant. So did this wrong tenant get her box or was it lost in the mail?
Wren stalks Whitney so he can meet her by chance and the sparks fly between them. He wants to see where things go but how does he tell her who he is and how he knows who she is. Can Whitney trust Wren when she learns the truth about her package? IS there a chance for a future for Wren and Whitney? And you got to love a foul mouth bird, he will have you in stitches.
This is the second book in this series and I am loving this group of security guys. This story is filled with fun, laughter, suspense, and two people that are meant to be together. So sit back and enjoy all that is Wren and Whitney.

This is book 2 in the Blackbridge Security Series but is an interconnected standalone so it could be read without the other book. Looking for a witty read, some hot chemistry with a dominate tendency and a little suspense. Them jump right in.

Wren is the resident computer geek of the security team. Spending most of his time behind the office doors with many screens lit and fingers flying over the keys. This is where he feels at his best. I true geek fashion he isn't so great with the face to face social aspects. When he receives a deliver for a neighbor in his building he clearly need to search them out before the face to face meet. Boy of boy did he get more than he bargained for.

Whitney spends most of her time at home working at her computer, ordering in and playing online games. Most of her friends are online and that is just where she likes to keep them. But her bestie is always trying to get her to step out of her box and meet people. When she stumbles upon a new guy in her favorite game she willingly steps up to help him out. When her work leads her in a new direction and things get a little dicey she might be forced to run.

I loved getting to know the fellas of the Blackbridge Security a little better and can't wait for Flynn's story next.

As soon as this book hit my kindle, I had to read it ASAP! After reading Hostile Territory and getting a glimpse at the awesome guys of Blackbridge Security, I need to know more about the elusive and IT expert Wren Nelson. This guy is an amazing hacker and super smart when it comes to computers, now with women, that is a different story. With all of his skills, he has no idea how to talk to women or flirt, so when a package for his neighbor comes to him by mistake, he does what he does best- look online. Whitney is an anomaly, she is pretty computer savvy herself and the more Wren finds out about her, the more he thinks she is perfect. But what happens when they meet? Read to see! ;)

All in all this book was exactly what I hoped it would be, Wren is adorable but also pretty darn alpha in his own way. Whitney is a bad@ss in her own right and the story just sucks you in from the very beginning. I was engrossed and couldn't wait to see what happens next. I LOVED this book and cannot wait for the next one in the series! 5 stars from me!

PS: Thank you to Marie James and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly.

Shot in the Dark (Blackbridge Security #2) by Marie James
4 stars
M/F Romance, lights BDSM
Triggers: Attempted kidnapping, Murder, Cheating
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Wren is amazing with computers. He is the go to person at his job to find anyone, hack anywhere and while the guys like to give him a hard time about him always being front of the screen, they wouldn't know how to get along without him. Wren also has the most adorably inappropriate pet - it will make you laugh out loud.

Wren isn't one to truly have a great personal life. He's always at work or at his Nana's house. When he does find time to hang with the guys, he's very ineffective with flirting and picking women up. Wren is used to online hookups, but nothing with substance or meaning. When he accidentally is given the wrong package and even more mistakenly opens it at work, what ensues is a somewhat hilarious, but serious relationship with a woman who Wren has to get to know.

Whitney is great with computers in her own way. She is an amazing gamer and a great hacker in her own way. But, when she's tasked with finding out about someone high up in the FBI, what she doesn't expect is what follows. With her mind only a little on Wren and how adorable he is with his clumsiness, Whitney has to keep her whits in order to figure out who is truly behind the mystery that she's been asked to uncover.

These two have great chemistry and super fun banter. They have similar appetites and that just makes their encounters that much sexier. I really enjoyed the mystery within the story and felt that there was a good balance of romance and mystery. I can't wait for more books!

3.5 stars - not what I was expecting.

So this one comes with a disclaimer from the beginning. And on the one hand - it makes sense since he is an IT guy and he is sweet and awkward to boot, but on the other hand...it is kinda creepy and totally invasive.

"Everything that happens between us now will be natural, forged through time spent together and in-person discovery.
If only I didn't have this rock sitting in my stomach telling me that I've already gone too far for her to ever trust me."

So I'm torn because part of me really likes Wren and the awkwardness yet rightness of his and Whitney's relationship, but... Also totally surprised at his kinky side - wowza - that really steamed up the pages and took this book into turns I wasn't expecting.

Definitely full of suspense, intrigue, stalking (of the not really nefarious kind), BDSM kink, and a whole lot more.

This series definitely is a page turner and keeps you guessing. Looking forward to what the guys get into next.

I voluntarily requested and read an uncorrected advance reader copy.

Wren may be a phenom behind his computer but the same can’t be said when it comes to women. When he receives a very personal parcel that was destined for his neighbor, he is equal parts embarrassed and fascinated. He is determined to learn everything he can about this sexy woman and he is enchanted even more but trying to meet her is proving to be quite the challenge.

Whitney couldn’t have been a better match for Wren as she also is more comfortable behind a computer and her interactions with men are beyond uncomfortable. When their worlds collide not only does the chemistry between them escalate but so does the danger and Wren will do whatever is necessary to protect the woman he has come to love.

Wren and Whitney couldn’t have been a better match both in bed and out of bed. They complete each other’s lives in ways they never imagined and their journey is equal parts suspense, heat and humor.

I fell in love with Blackbridge Security and all the wonderful snarky men in book one. Wren in all his geekiness and awkwardness captured my attention. I wanted to know more about the man who hides behind his computer screen.

When Wren received his wrong box of goodies, it livened up his life and created a stalker in him. He wanted to know whose box of naughty goodies has received and it intrigued him. He got a little bit obsessed with the W Nelson that he saw through his computer.

Wren completely surprised me. Who would have thought the quiet geek would have such a naughty side. His relationship with Whitney was erotic and insanely hot. Again, totally surprising from Wren. Whitney was the perfect match for Wren. They fit each other so well. My favorite character was Puff Daddy. That bird stole the show with his potty mouth which made me laugh every single time. Everybody should have a friend like Puff Daddy.

IT expert, hacker extraordinaire = geek, nerd, taped glasses, living in the basement of his parents.
ME = misconception, error, falsehood, illusion, untruth
I must admit, reading Hostile Territory (#1) and starting Shot in the Dark, my conception of Wren was a misconception. NOT that the author painted him as such, but it was where my mind went, AND, oh to be proven so wrong! Just his skills were extremely impressive! But what an handsome man! No wonder Whitney was attracted to him upon first sight! And from there, the story becomes extremely interesting! Puff Daddy was in his usual rare form! Another great story in the new Blackbridge Security Series! Now, who's up next in this series? *rubbing my hands together*

I wasn't sure about this read after blurb but holy cow am I glad I read this one. Wren is a computer "researcher" and definitely not the typical alpha that I find myself swooning for in reads. He is strong and dominant but has his imperfections which I found endearing. Whitney is also into computers and I loved her quirky personality. The two of these characters together have explosive chemistry and a fun little story. The build up of their meeting was hilarious and throw in a little twist and turn in there to keep my attention the entire time.

I would absolutely recommend this read if you are looking for something which packs in the heat and is just a little quirky throughout the read.

I have been a huge Marie James fan for what seems like forever. She never fails to deliver a series full of characters you can’t help but love, she NEVER leaves you unsatisfied, and she just keeps getting better.
I knew from the first book in this series that I was going to love Wren and Whitney. And boy did James ever deliver. They are perfect for each other and their chemistry had me needing to turn on the fan. I couldn’t put this one down.
I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend picking this one up today!

Wren and Whitney’s story is a little quirky, entertaining and seriously steamy. A story that is full of secrets and lies has you on the edge of your seat and captivated by Wren’s approach to win the girl with the purple hair that has stolen his heart. This is a story that is not only passionate and heartwarming but is full of so much humour that you will at times laugh till you cry. A love story that is overflowing with drama, suspense and intrigue also ticks all the boxes with sweet heartfelt moments. Wren’s character might be a little awkward at times but when he brings out his commanding tendencies you will find your skin will tingle and your pulse will race. However as much as I loved Wren and Whitney the winner for me was Puff Daddy, that bird was definitely stealing the show.
