Nick Sousanis is a comic artist and educator currently based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His 2015 book Unflattening, written entirely in comic form, argues for the importance of visual thinking as a mode of learning and has received world-wide acclaim. The Independent, Forbes, and The Irish Examiner named Unflattening as a Best Graphic Novel of 2015. Print listed it as a Best Design Book of 2015 and The New York Observer listed it as one of the year’s Ten Best Books on Innovation. It has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Paris Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Afterimage, and numerous other media outlets. His comics have appeared most recently in The Boston Globe and Nature. He has lectured at schools and symposia across the US, in Europe, and at the Microsoft Research lab. A native Detroiter, Sousanis co-founded thedetroiter.com, a webzine of the city’s art and culture scene. Sousanis hold a Doctorate of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies from Columbia University Teachers College, master’s degrees in Art and Mathematics from Wayne State University, and a BS in Mathematics from Western Michigan University.
