A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Focus on Students and Student Achievement
Celebrate and Enjoy!
Dear Newport Parents, Families, and Staff:
Today is Day 10 of the 2022-23 school year. This week will be our first full uninterrupted week of school and classroom learning. I know everyone is still getting back into the flow of bus pickups, getting to school, settling in for classes, athletics and team sports, and of course homework! This is a very exciting time as all of us are setting schedules, routines at home, at school, and after school to start off on a strong positive new year. It is also a time to keep the conversations with your child about school focused on school, and learn from your child how the school year is going.
I want to stress again how critical it is for parents and caretakers to help set school day routines for your children and be clear with your older students your expectations for their academics while still participating in after school jobs, clubs, and athletics. Everyone has busy, complicated lives, and creating a routine is essential for student learning and success. This includes setting wakeup and bedtimes, homework time, and an opportunity each day to talk about what your child’s school day was like. This is the day-to-day of being an engaged parent and it will pay off with your child better prepared to learn and to share their school experiences.
I also want to reemphasize Newport Public Schools themes for this year which are the “Importance of Building Relationships and Building Positive Relationships.” Learning is so much more than what’s in a book or up on the chalkboard. Learning is all about building positive relationships between students and teachers, students and their fellow students, and of course students and their families. With positive relationships we can support and help our students be successful.
A big step that you can take in building positive relationships is to get to know your student’s teachers and principals. Attend your school’s open house and town hall events, and later this year be sure to attend parent teacher conferences.
With positive relationships established, our students (and teachers) feel supported and that’s a powerful base to build successful learning, particularly when our students encounter academic challenges and seek enrichment opportunities to follow their passions.
Have a great week everyone, and let’s all get to work on strong school day routines and building positive relationships!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Sinceramente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendente

FAFSA Accepting Applications Starting October 1st
Attention to our Rogers High School and NACTC seniors exploring their college options: Each year, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, opens on October 1st. Filing your FAFSA as close to October 1st as possible improves your chances of qualifying for the most grant, scholarship, and work-study aid. Even if your child at this time is not certain or considering post high school education it is a good idea to fill out the application to see what options are available. Many families are pleasantly surprised when participating in the application process- and we have several graduates that are now attending colleges and universities that they never dreamed were possible. So keep your child’s options open- and look into FAFSA. Contact your guidance counselor with questions about completing the FAFSA, or schedule a free appointment with a RISLA College Planning Center expert. Check it out- you never know.
FAFSA Night is scheduled in the Rogers Library at 5:30 pm on October 13 for our families to come in and complete their FAFSA and or their CSS Profile.
Reminder: Please Return School Meal Applications
Free/Reduced meal eligibility is based on applications that are returned. Applications will be distributed through your child’s school. We would appreciate ALL applications being returned even if your family is not eligible. The percentage of returned applications generates additional funding for Newport Public Schools.
Recordatorio: devuelva las solicitudes de comidas escolares
Reminder: Download the Newport Public Schools App
