The TEACH SPRING 2021 group has been attending listening sessions and de-briefs to hear from faculty about their remote teaching experiences.
No theme has come up more often than the use of breakout rooms to engage students interactively in their own learning. We have been impressed by the creative ways that breakout rooms are being used in large, medium, and small classes across the disciplines. These uses support our four governing concepts for remote learning: Connection, Communication, Flexibility and Consistency.
We invite you to attend our next event where a faculty panel will share their breakout room practices and purposes. A discussion will follow. We hope to see you there!
Presenters:
- Ellen Frank – Faculty, Economics, College of Liberal Arts
- Linda Chiofar – Faculty - College of Nursing and Health Sciences
- Deborah Budden – Faculty, English, CLA

The workshop will also demystify the surface language feature dilemmas that some faculty experience with multilingual writing and offer guidance on reading generously for meaning.
Featuring Five Faculty Videos on Connecting with and Learning from Students
March 11, 2021, @ 2:30-4:00 pm
The TEACH group has been working since last summer to support faculty in the pivot to remote teaching. Hundreds of faculty members have joined us and we have found this collaboration gratifying. Recent surveys sponsored by the Faculty Council and Undergraduate Student Government, however, have drawn our attention to areas of student discontent which include the perception of unmanageable workloads and a loss of connection with their professors.
We believe that more intentional, sustained communication between students and instructors would go a long way toward addressing these concerns.
For that reason, TEACH Spring 2021 has launched a video project in which selected faculty across the University to describe how they regularly solicit student feedback, do wellness checks, listen carefully, clarify their purposes and make adjustments as needed. We invite you to our first event using some of these impressive 3-minute videos.
We will focus on practical steps you can take at mid-term and offer how-to instruction in the technologies described. The video authors include:
- Lauren Bowen, English
- Bob Chen, School for the Environment
- Linda Chiofar, Nursing
- Chris Denning, Curriculum and Instruction
- Andrew Perumal, Economics
