Our Candidates comment that Untapped Potential Inc. ‘s client/candidate #returntowork events are both thrilling and scary at the same time. Stephanie Grunewald, PhD’s post diagram depicts well that “optimal zone” beyond your comfort zone that offers a “good” stress that leads to growth and learning. Only by putting yourself in that zone will you have the opportunity to reach your potential.

Stress isn’t the enemy—it’s the energy you need for peak performance! Did you know that a *certain* amount of stress actually enhances your performance? The Yerkes-Dodson law, often depicted as an inverted U, illustrates the fascinating correlation between stress and performance. This law proposes that there's a sweet spot of stress—a moderate level—that actually enhances our performance. Too little stress and we may lack motivation… Too much stress and we risk burnout… 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻, 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆. 𝘚𝘰, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬? Here are a few strategies: 1️⃣ 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀: Recognize what triggers your stress to manage it 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 rather than reactively. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀: Engage in simple breathing exercises, such as Box Breathing where you inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. This can center your thoughts and lower immediate stress, making it easier to focus. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲:Physical movement isn’t just good for your body; it’s also a potent stress reliever. This doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym for a high-intensity workout, simply walking 10 minutes a day has been proven to have a profound impact. 4️⃣ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀: Integrate short breaks into your daily routine. Stepping away from work for even a few minutes can clear your mind and reduce stress levels, boosting your productivity when you return. 5️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲: First, don’t overcommit! Then, break down your tasks into manageable chunks and set realistic deadlines. This helps manage workload stress and keeps you from feeling overwhelmed. Remember, the goal is not to eliminate stress but to optimize it for peak performance. Mastering stress management doesn’t just improve your work performance; it enhances your overall quality of life. Learn to embrace the right amount of stress and use it to your advantage! I’d love to show you how.

So glad Erin Hatzikostas is “talking” about Nobel Prize winner, Claudia Goldin! Her work captures all those educated-experienced professionals that opted-out (were forced out of participating in our Nations GDP) because … a myriad of reasons that shed light on a work-world that is yet to pivot to “knowledge economy” and societal structure of dual career couples- but instead is stuck in the Industrial Age with the “never really a norm” fraction of our population with family-structure of a “stay at home spouse” doing all home and family care.
Claudia Goldin deservedly wins the Nobel Prize for research that confirms the same ole motions will NOT advance women. I distinctly remember sitting in meetings when I co-chaired our Women’s Leadership Alliance. We’d talk about allll these topics to bring to our members. - Sponsorship - Networking - Executive Presence 🤮 And I would just sit there and think… that’s not really what’s holding us back. It’s the practical, every day stuff in our lives that makes it impossible for us to fully lean in, without falling over. In fact, in my TEDx Talk some may say I leaned awkwardly into the statement: “The biggest reason we have a gender inequality issue isn’t that women are being held down. It’s that we’re opting down. Look, it’s not that it’s our fault. But many highly educated, highly educated women ARE opting down. Goldin’s research shines a spotlight on a few things: 1. It hasn’t always been (and won’t always be 🤞🏽) the same barrier to achieving gender equity. Yes, in the “olden days,” things like education and occupational choice were the biggest issue. But that is no longer the problem. 2. There is an acute issue that’s not super comfortable to talk about or easy to fix on a mass scale. Her research found that the moment a woman has a baby, it is a life and career changing event. The old male-female lines are still often drawn towards women taking on more of the childcare than men. Super uncomfy to talk about, including me. Even women that have had huge success and are in strong relationships, struggle. Sometimes it’s our partner. Sometimes it’s us. But the reality is that if we want to get to equity, you have to look there. Hard. Some thought-starters on how we change this: 1. Spilt up childcare duties along some line. Eg my husband handle the “management” of all my son’s sports and I handle my daughter’s. 2. HR - survey your teams. What TANGIBLE things would help them manage work and life better? Childcare stipends? No meetings past 3:30? 3. Coaches (yes, a timely soapbox) - schedule the sports practices ahead of time so people can plan. Also, don’t overschedule please. Seriously, it puts a massive strain on families, and Johnny and Julie will still kick butt at the game. 4. Spend more time talking about this. In big forums, in small ones. Create groups aimed at inspiring others - men and women - with real stories and real solutions. 5. Use, demonstrate, cheer on authenticity. Our research found that people are not only happier when they can be more authentic, they trust and follow you more. Women THRIVE when authenticity is part of the “game’s” culture. Be real with us and we’ll show you real progress. What else? *see link in comments for more on her research #thatsme #nobelprize #womensequity #womensequality #research #authenticity
