Tony Sheridan has died, aged 72.

The musician was best known as an early collaborator with The Beatles in the 1960s.

He is said to have passed away yesterday (January 16) in Hamburg, Germany. A statement from his family on Facebook read: "Our beloved father and friend! Thank you for your love and inspiration. You left us today at 12.00 pm."

The Beatles - then known as The Beat Brothers - played as a backing band to Sheridan on a cover of 'My Bonnie' in 1961. The band then consisted of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best.

Sheridan is only one of two non-Beatles along with Billy Preston to receive a label performance credit on a record with the band, while he was also the only non-Beatle to be the lead singer on a Beatles track which charted as a single.

He is also known to have introduced the band to American R&B records, which became a big influence on the group's early career.

Sheridan was incorrectly reported to have died while performing for American troops during the Vietnam War, after some members of his band were killed by enemy fire.

He released a new album titled Vagabond in 2002, mostly of his own material, while 1961 records with The Beatles have received reissues over the years.

Sheridan is survived by his wife Anna and his musician son Tony Sheridan Jr from an earlier marriage.
