About This Cause

As a partner of atlatszo.hu - watchdog NGO and online newspaper for investigative journalism -, Átlátszónet Foundation is committed to promoting social justice, democracy and sustainable development, utilizing the tools of investigative journalism and civic activism monitoring the use of public funds and the fate of public property issues. Atlatszo.hu aims to promote transparency, accountability, and freedom of information in Hungary. Hungary’s first investigative journalism non-profit - established in 2011 - is financed by nonpartisan and non-governmental sources; we do not accept money from state institutions, political parties and affiliates. Atlatszo.hu – “atlatszo” means transparent in Hungarian – produces investigative reports, accepts information from whistleblowers, files freedom of information requests, and commences freedom of information lawsuits in cases where its requests are refused. Working together with atlatszo.hu Átlátszónet Foundation receives FOI requests and publishes public interest information, prepares investigative reports and, if necessary, goes to court to enforce the publicity of public data. Our organization also plays an active role in the operation and promotion of the KiMitTud FOI request portal, and organizes specific workshops for independent news portals, publicity blogs, activist Facebook communities and specialized NGOs operated by local civilians, aiming to provide watchdog methodology to communities and citizens and thus promoting the right to informed decision making as well as promoting FOI requests as a necessary and effective tool for participatory democracy. With continuous availability, our Foundation provides personal and online legal support to journalists, civilians, and public bloggers to identify and locate the public interest information they need for their work. We also provide support for them to prepare their FOI requests and legal services in case their request is denied. Through enhancing the methodological and legal knowledge of journalists, civilians and public bloggers, the number of applications has increased in the past few years, the proportion and number of successful applications grew. However, in addition to the data seekers, the administrative burden of the data owners (state and other public authorities) also decreased.
