2022 BLM at School-Iowa Presents: A Week of Action. Year of Purpose. Lifetime Commitment.
Join BLM at School Iowa in our 3rd Annual Week of Action!

We are excited to welcome the participants and families of our Ethnic Studies Leadership Academy!
We had such a great response last year that we decided to host events not only during the week of action but throughout the year.

Event Descriptions:

Tues 3/29 Nurturing Your Crown: Caring for the Natural Curls of BIPOC folks @ 630-730 PM CST
***Caring for our hair can be a challenge, especially being in Iowa with limited stylists and resources. Join us as we create a space of learning on taking care of the curls and textures of BIPOC folks. BIPOC folks & parents of BIPOC children are welcome to come and learn. We will hear from local professional stylists, too!

Sun 4/3 Books & Breakfast @ 2 PM CST :
**Every Month on the 1st Sunday we will highlight banned books and others that support the education of all youth in Iowa. Support our efforts to get books in the hands of Iowa youth! Folks are invited to donate one book or many and a breakfast for our youth to enjoy a meal while reading truth of American History from banned books.

Statewide Meeting of Iowa Black-led Organizations
**This Black Affinity Group Meeting space serves as a place for Black organizations, businesses and non-profits to take the time to connect and build within an intergenerational space. We will network and build community.



Previous events:
Day 1: Mon 1/31 Iowa Youth Activists Leading the Way Panel @ 6-730 PM CST
*Connect with youth and students from across the state to learn how students have organized for justice in Des Moines, Iowa City & Ames.

Day 2: Tue 2/1 Yoga as a Black Care Practice @ 530 PM in Slater Hall, Iowa City (virtual or in person option)
**Join Black Yogis as they walk us through caring for ourselves, our bodies and our minds.

Day 3: Thur 2/3 On These Grounds Film Screening in person at FilmScene @ 630 PM CST with virtual talk back
***FilmScene joins us in screening the film documenting the resilience and strength of Black youth even when bring surrounded by trauma and punishment within the school to prison pipeline.

Day 4: Sun 2/13 For the Love of College: Exploring HBCUs & PWIs @ 3-430 PM CST
***Connect with college students, alumni and counselors from across the country during this workshop to learn about options for college. It doesn't matter how much money your family has or if you haven't thought about college yet. BIPOC high school students, younger students and their families will be prioritized for this session. Allies are welcome to attend as well.
