You may remember that Chain | Cohn | Stiles this year launched a new educational grant program open to all Kern County students. To apply for the "Chats with Chain Cohn Stiles" grants, students ask our lawyers a question and we award $500 to the student whose question gets picked.
Well, we have awarded our first grant and answered our first question from a student who asked: "Can social media be used against someone in a court case?" Watch the video by clicking the photo below.
Applications for the grant remain open for the rest of the year. Have your student apply at bit.ly/chatsgrants.

In a tragic case, our law firm recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the parents of 21-year-old Ryan Kowal, who died while in the care of SAILS Westbrook Crisis Home in Bakersfield. Kowal, who had severe autism and required one-on-one care, was left unsupervised, choked on crackers, and died. This is a warning to families of special-needs children and adults everywhere to beware of for-profit care facilities who sacrifice appropriate support and care, which they are contractually obligated to provide, to increase profit margins.

Lastly, last week we bid farewell to paralegal Lesleigh Johnston, who retired after first joining our firm 35 years ago. Lesleigh has been the backbone of our firm’s workers’ compensation department, and our clients and staff will miss her tremendously. In this picture here, she stands with work injury attorneys Jim Yoro, right, and Beatriz Trejo, who is wearing her "Lesleigh costume". Please join us in wishing her a happy retirement.
All the best to you and yours,
