Football Recap
In the first year of the newly reenergized program our Chieftains adapted and put in more work than they ever have to build a strong foundation that will carry on through future seasons. They finished their football season with a record of 4 wins and 6 losses. This was a great improvement as they hit 4 wins for the first time in 4 years and also won their first league game in 4 years. Jackson Merrifield lead the passing offense by throwing for 528 yards and 3 passing touchdowns. Tyler Allen was also a key offensive player who rushed for 1,113 yards. The Defense was lead by senior middle linebacker Leo Landerer who had 125 tackles on the season. Coach Gonzo is looking forward to expanding on the team’s potential and seeing the growth that is to come.
The following players made 1st and 2nd team for the central league:
1st team Defense - Leo Landerer & Diego Pereya
1st Team Offense - Tyler Allen & Alex Jeter
2nd Team Defense - Cashton Birtness & Laroy Marshall
2nd Team Offense - Jackson Merrifield & George Lafever
Kicker: Kellen Morton
Cross Country Recap
Both the Eastern League and CIF Championships brought out serious talent and pushed Clairemont to exceeding reaches. The boys and girls slugged it out as they crescendoed and let their season shine. The usual suspects capped the top three spots and posted some competitive times.
Let’s see how they faired:
Starting off at league with the ladies, we have 12th grader, Allie Burden, posting a time of 20:49 landing her in 8th place. Junior, Kayden Coker, was not far behind with an 11th place time of 21:08. And senior, Elisha Zugman, placed 33rd with a finishing time of 28:33.
Now, onto the boys:
Nate Powell, 10th grade, had some serious gas finishing 18th with a stellar time of 17:44. Senior, Bryant Ross, came in 32nd with a time of 18:35. And, upper classman, Mark Steel, brought up the rear with a 40th place finish of 19:47.
Some highlights from league…
Kayden Coker and Allie Burden came away with finishing medals and Kayden walked away with the award for “Junior Runner of the Year.” Nice work, guys! Freshman, Ian Spears, PR’d with a finishing time of 21:31. Way to go, Ian!
As far as CIF goes, the Chief’s showed up nicely. Morley hosted the largest field in history which made for a challenging race environment. Emotions ran high as a select few Clairemont runners vied for State qualification. PR’s and SR’s were posted and our team proved they could better themselves yet again.
Here’s some numbers:
Ladies came away with two PR’s and one SR record. Your swiftest racer was senior, Allie Burden, with an 18th place finish of 20:49 and a SR. Junior, Kayden Coker, followed not far behind with a 19th place PR finishing time of 20:57. Last, but not least, senior, Elisha Zugman, rounded out the group with a PR time of 27:51 and an 81st finish.
Senior boys, Bryant Ross, Mark Steel, Cody Brown and Josh Gasaway walked away with season records and/or a PR — Bryant at an 18:09, Mark at 19:08 and Cody a 19:41. Josh hit a PR with a finishing time of 21:06. Sophomore, Nate Powell, medaled with a screaming fast 16:58 PR, while freshman, Ian Spears, trudged hard to get his 21:31 PR.
Our season was full of surprises, twists and turns. Everyone ran their hearts out and it was a pleasure to take flight with them all. We’d like to thank our fans and supporters. Without your interest and dedication we could not have done nearly as well as we did. Here’s to an awesome culmination of XC events and to those who are moving on, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You made all this possible!

ATTENDANCE REPORTING

Some of those absences still need to be called in by a parent/guardian and excused as illness. To clear an attendance, follow the instructions under Reporting an Absence on our CHS Attendance Page.
