Migration is Beautiful: A Butterfly Making Workshop for Kids

Join artist-activist, Favianna Rodriguez, for a free hands-on art making workshop for children and their parents on Sunday, July 17th to celebrate the opening day of the Presidio Tunnel Tops.

Favianna will lead with a short talk about the power of art to transform the imagination and honor the many insects and creatures from our local ecosystems. Young participants will be able to create their own set of butterfly wings to celebrate the monarch butterfly and the importance of migration. The monarch butterfly is not only an amazing pollinator, it also has a beautiful story of movement that is relevant today.

In her art, Favianna elevates the butterfly as a symbol for the right of all living beings to move freely. “We belong to nature, and nature has no borders. Like the monarch butterfly, human beings cross borders in search of safer habitats. Migration is Beautiful celebrates the resiliency, courage, and determination of migrants who come in search of their dreams,” explains Favianna Rodriguez.

Each participant will get to paint their own wearable butterfly wings.

This workshop is part of the Ancestral Futurism project, a temporary art installation in the Presidio Tunnel Tops that honors the diversity and interconnectedness of all humans, land, flora and fauna that have lived in this ecosystem throughout the centuries. The multi-site art installation depicts a vision for an interconnected future that begins with examining the colonial and repressive history of the Presidio.
