Favorite Pokémon Tournament 2016: Poison (Sept. 27 - Oct. 3)

Welcome to the fourth annual Favorite Pokémon Tournament, hosted here in Pokémon General! The goal of the Favorite Pokémon Tournament (or FPT), is to determine the most popular Pokémon of the users here at the PokéCommunity. This will be a 10-week set of polls culminating in mid-November, where we'll pit almost all the Pokémon from different types of past and present generations against each other to determine a winner. After we know the results of each type, we'll add all of those Pokémon to a final poll, where the winner(s) will be crowned champion, and will go down into the record books as PokéCommunity's favorite Pokémon of 2016!

If you are new to the Favorite Pokémon Tournament, or would just like a refresher on the rules/process of the event, please take a look at the FAQ posted below:

    Spoiler:

NOTE: Because of the limited number of poll spaces, not all eligible Pokémon have been included. If you want to vote for an unlisted Poison-type, check the "Other Pokémon" option represented by a (?), and leave a post with your vote.

Now that you know what the tournament is all about, what are you waiting for? Polls are open until October 3rd, so get voting!

I used to not be a big fan of this type but after giving more of them a try through various platforms, I realized there are some pretty cool Poison types out there and have a lot of use in today's metagame.

Only a few have actually stood out as favorites though: Trubbish line, I know its not popular but Trubbish and Garbodor will always have a special place in my heart for being literal trash but not letting it get them down haha

Second is Muk, the epitome of Poison types. The nostalgia factor is real for this Pokemon and I always like using it when playing some of the older games.

Third is the Croagunk line. This line was another important Pokemon in a recent X playthrough and I was really able to see what it can do when used right. As I like to put it, it was the X-factor on that team.

I voted for Dragalge (Poison/Dragon is such a SWEET type combination), and for Other.

The other being Qwilfish. Qwilfish gets no love.

EDIT: I love Gengar. Period. However, I didn't vote for him because I like him as a Ghost-type, not as a Poison-type. Ghost/Poison is also I really cool combination, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think of him as a Poison-type Pokemon.

I voted for three original, nostalgic lines. But also the only three I like from a design perspective: Grimer, Gastly, and Koffing lines!

Really only two choices for me here this time: Bulbasaur line and the Bellsprout line.

Arbok, Nidoking,Gastly line, Seviper, and Salandit. Even though not much is known about Salandit yet, I love the look of it and the fact that it's a fire and poison type.

Croagunk is the only choice for me! It's based on a poison dart frog so perfect typing and the design is so cool! Croagunk are brilliant in the anime too!

    I voted for:

Crobat: I am actually a huge fan of the entire Crobat family, but Crobat was an absolute favorite of mine in generation 2 and I used it a lot when I first played those games. It is an incredibly fast pokemon that is surprisingly strong. I have also always liked its design with the four different wings, it makes it look really awesome and its smaller body definitely give it a much closer appearance to an actual bat. I also want to say, for Golbat specifically, I loved Golbat when I was a little kid because of its original sprite design with its giant tongue hanging out, which has sadly and mysteriously disappeared since then.

Vileplume: Vileplume is so cool and was one of my favorite grass pokemon back in the older games, I liked it's dark and mysterious appearance. I still like it now and I even placed it on a really cool sunny day team with "chlorophyll" back in my white version, and it was impressively powerful. It has a pretty decent move pool to boot.

Muk: I do like Muk quite a bit despite the fact that I have not used it to its full potential. Something about a gigantic thick pile of animated sludge has always seemed really neat to me. Plus this pokemon walls quite impressively which is what (IMO) is the best way to use poison types. I will admit, its move pool isn't all that spectacular, but it has access to all of the best poison moves which is more than enough for this guy.

Gengar: Honestly, Gengar doesn't really need much of an explanation. This pokemon has been ridiculously amazing since its original conception in generation one. Gengar has never not been a spectacular pokemon. My favorite memories of Gengar is always tied to "Pokemon Stadium", I seriously can not play that game without having a Gengar on my team.

Swalot: My absolute favorite solid Poison type pokemon is definitely Swalot. I love its bright purple coloring and I always have enjoyed its mustache. Swalot is also incredibly useful as a wall pokemon and I definitely used it in both my play through of Sapphire version and Omega Ruby and it didn't disappoint me in either games (however I think it was strictly better in OR than it was in Sapphire). The sheer bulk of this pokemon combined with a move pool that greatly supports that style, I threw Swalot in to so many battles where I just used it to waste time or KO very slowly. Throw this guy in front of a bus, he will totally be fine.

Toxicroak: Toxicroak is definitely one of my favorite aggressive Poison type pokemon which I feel are few and far between. Although Toxicroak is incredibly susceptible psychic, generation 6 has altered the weakness and resistance chart in favor of this guy. Psychic types are not the power houses that they used to be, which has given Toxicroak a lot of breathing room. Toxicroak has an incredible move pool as well as some pretty impressive stats. To top it all off, it has a very vibrant and deadly looking design with an intimidating smile, what's not to like?

This was considerably easier since Poison is in my top three favourites when it comes to types!

    - Spinarak line
    - Budew line
    - Stunky line
    - Skorupi line
    - Croagunk line

I would have chosen the Zubat line too but I only really like one-third of their evolutionary line and that is Crobat. I'm really not a fan of either Zubat or Golbat otherwise.

Poison is one of those types I don't use a lot, but that still didn't stop me getting some votes in.

The ones I picked include the Bulbasaur line, Zubat line, Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume, Tentacool line, Dustox, Roselia line, Stunky line, Skorupi line, Croagunk line and Venipede line. Like what I said in the Ground poll, I mostly chose based on design and my personal experience using them.

I love Poison-types so I voted for quite a few lol.

Oddish line - one of my favourite lines. I love Vileplume, it's got such a cool design and I love its sprites in-game.
Koffing line - Cool design, decent in battle, and I love James' Koffing/Weezing in the anime.
Grimer line - Again, it's got a really cool design lol. It's not that great in battle but that's ok.
Bellsprout line - Mainly voted for these guys based on Weepinbell and Victreebel. Victreebel is one of my favourite Pokémon, and again James' Victreebel was brilliant.
Venonat line - Mainly voting for Venomoth here. Quiver Dance is a great move, Venomoth has a really elegant design (especially for a moth!).
Gulpin line - One of my favourite lines from Hoenn. Definitely my powerhouse from my recent OR runthrough, and I love its design (ok, common trend here).
Croagunk line - Super cool design and great in battle from when I used it in Platinum.
And a vote in Other for Qwilfish, which I've always loved even though it's so forgotten.

Voted for the Oddish family and for the Zubat family; love them both and they're both lines I use in almost every play through I do! Would have voted for Foongus as well but I assume he's just being saved for the Grass type tournament?

My votes went to the Bulbasaur and Spinarak lines, I've loved the designs for all these Pokemon since I saw them for the first time.

    (And, you know, nostalgia...)
