Geocache Description:

A regular cache placed close to Holmbury St. Mary Youth Hostel. This was built in 1935 and was the first purpose-built youth hostel in the country. In 2002 it came close to closure but was saved.

You are looking for a large (appriximately 3 litre) plastic box.

The Hurtwood is the name given to an area of over 3000 acres of beautiful Surrey heath and woodland embracing Holmbury Hill, Pitch Hill, Winterfold, Shere Heath, Farley Heath and part of Blackheath. In 1926 the Hurtwood was one of the very first privately owned areas of the country to create a "right to roam". Although it is the largest area of common land in Surrey, the land is privately owned by Shere Manor Estate and by Albury Estate.

This cache is one of a number of caches set around The Pitch Series. The motivation for any cache should be a good hunt in an interesting location and we hope that these caches in the Surrey Hills are just that. Hopefully, they will tempt a few more cachers into this glorious hilly woodland. All the caches are reasonable sized boxes with plenty of room for swaps and TBs.

The other reason for setting them was to add some more family friendly traditional caches to and area that has more than it's fair share of puzzles or difficult multis.

If cachers want to take the opportunity to have a go at some of the difficult multis and puzzles, then so much the better!

These caches were set with the kind permission of The Hurtwood Control who do a magnificent job (largely through self-generated funding) keeping this area maintained for the public to enjoy. Please therefore respect the area and keep to the designated parking areas. The nearest parking to this cache being at N51 11.605 W000 25.290.

The ranger for this area is Mark Beamont. If you have anything you need to bring to his attention, please contact him at the Hurtwood Control Trust office (01483 267267).
